user reviews of the Beef and Barrel, Ponders End

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Now this is the sort of thing that really irritates me, this pub has now been closed for the thick end of a decade and for at least 4 years of that it has been reduced to rubble, which the neighbouring Police Station has also now been turned into. What has been built on the site so far? Nothing! That's what. Why has an important community asset been demolished and left to lie in ruins for this length of time? Even if the previous owners couldn't turn enough of a profit from the pub, and even if inevitably the area was going to be earmarked for a block of flats at some stage in the 15 years that followed them locking their doors for the final time - surely, there could have been a short-term leasing option to keep the place in use until such time as the property vultures finally swooped in to knock it down and replace it with more faceless housing developments that are too expensive for locals to buy? Apparently not, so now we have no pub, no housing and an ugly scrap of wasteland on the high road (insert your own joke about Ponders End resembling a wasteland here) with nothing on it but rubble. Really what's the bloody point?

Sad to see it's gone - completely gone - was a regular for a couple of years 95 - 98 ish. Think it was originally called The Swan

Can't belive it's closed!! Had some fantastic times there while at uni 3 years ago; graduated 2006. Best was the P'J party where everyone including the staff & manager wore PJ's, legend!

Used to love this place when I was a student at middlesex uni, which is pretty much next door. Going to visit it again when I can: just a pitty it's in the eternal crapheap known as ponders end.

Surprisingly expensive for what is essentially a student pub.

But decent enough atmosphere I suppose.

I have been drinking in the pub for about 4 years and I think it is great. Everyone works hard (all staff and manager included) The pub has such a buzzy feeling and people are always coming back for more (monday, tuesday, wednesday... infact, all the nights!) This year has been so successful among the students and lots of them are talking about it. Go and experience it !!!

Nice place.

Not that great, not that bad, just kinda nice. Pool table full of students who think they can play, get annoyed when they obviously cant, but other than that, it's a decent place to drink i guess.

Well, if you happen onto the wrong side of A10.

this pub does not ask much and there for does not get much in return. the beer is ok at an ok price, the pool tabele is not easy to get on due to too many people. and gets too crowded on friday and saturday night! So there for not much in the way of marks from me. 03/10!

Decent pub with a nice variety of drinks and a very cool jukebox. Nice atmosphere even if, like myself, you aren't a student or one of the increasingly small number of "real" regulars from the local area. Can get very busy at times and hard to find a seat (at my age you need one!) but is generally a decent venue for a few beers. Prices are reasonable even for those of us that haven't got a yeallow card. Never had food here as the kitchen rarely seems open when I am there.
For fans of alternative music, this is a decent replacement for the now sadly defunct Enfield Arms.

Do not drink in this pub if the land lord Graham is arround he is very rude! I have drunk in this pub for over 5 years now and have seen the ammount of people drinking in it go right down. I went in the a few weeks ago to order food, my chips came down with no chees (this is not a problem with me). When Graham came down I jokingly asked him where the cheese was hiding and he replied "I you don't FU*KING lik it drink somewhere else"! Needless to say me and my friends got up and left and none of us have been back since. There are 2 gret members of staff who are always helpful, these are Tim and Glen. But the land lord Graham is slowly killing the pub with his attidtude towards customers, his respect for his staff and the fact that in the whole time he has worked at the pub he has been spoted serving only twice! He roaters himself to work in the kitchen then promptly closes it so as a result the kitchen is rarely open.

This used to be such a good pub but Graham has ruined it. He should move!

The beef as it's known to the regulars(!) is a friendly student pub bar staff are fab always ready to have a giggle unless of course someone is rude to them then obviously they are gona have the arse ache!! and the reason it's "full of bloody students" is it's actually a student bar if you do't like being surrounded by young people wanting to have fun i suggest you go to spoons!! ;o)

I have been working at the Beef for a year and a half. The bar staff aren't racist, since I have been working there they have employed 3 people of a different race. If we were racist would they still be employed and if you ask them they like/d working there. You can have a yellow card or a gold card to get yellow card prices.

i think that the pub is wicked the bar staff are always having a laugh with their customers. A really atmosphere. i think the other commentators should drink else where because it is student oriented pub
dave - 16 Jul 2004 12:01
the pub is wicked, shame about the land lord he is useless but the rest of the staff are cool.
anonymous - 15 Jul 2004 13:16
Mix of students and bricklayers which doesn't mix well and the bar staff look paranoid.
2Bob - 22 Jun 2004 14:47
have been there for the past 2 years..was a really nice place until last week, decided to bring my mates who came down for a holiday n wow, they asked us for our passports..one of the staff was a racesist and rude..!just a warning people..they are racesist!

Moody sirup bar staff, full of bloody students!
anonymous - 20 May 2004 16:28
Friendly atmosphere but bar staff are a bit pick n mix, ranging from nice and helpful to bulldog chewing a wasp (in attitude and expression). Very studenty place-cheap discounted drinks if you get a yellow card.ps-if you say you are a student they will give you one regardless, no proof needed :)

Da Don - 9 Feb 2004 15:31
Was a great pub back in the mid 90s. Prone to odd bit of aggro though.

This pub is part of the 'Its a Scream' chain. Real student place (its next door to Middlesex university). the staff are friendly, its got a great jukebox, pool table. Really good atmosphere and if you are a student you can get a Yellow Card which gives you good discounts.
