i had visited this pub about 3 years ago and thought i would go back as previously the carvery was one of the best, we walked in and were met with a huge line of people queuing with lottery tickets lol...the lineup ranged from pensioners in wooly cardigans and chavs with hoods up and phones next to both ears...we should have walked right out but we made the mistake of staying...we got our plate full but then a chav with kids ran into us and hey presto it went on the floor...no food for me! absolute hell hole as they are catering for the hartcliffe hungry hordes who take a tumble over the hill for cheap food..i will never go back..it used to be such a nice place!

My friends and I paid a visit a week or so ago, and have to admit it doesn't seem to be doing as good in my opinion. Two ales where not avaliable and the chickens for the carvery were still being cooked, which limited the choice also, the soup a tasteless green liquid, The plates appear to be the same scratched to death ones as before. Also noted there had been a price drop in the carvery meal, which is also another sign?. All in all one gets the impression that they are just money takers, service and goods mediocre.

I went into this pub on mothers day 14/03/10. We had a party of 10. Table was booked for 6, got there at 5.30, as we were early we had no where to sit, my Grandmother who was 79 years old on that day had no where to sit during the wait for the table. When we did sit down, it was very cramped. Booking the table a few weeks earlier, we were told we had to take our own high chairs for my daughter and my nephew. I thought this was discusting, as there is not many places around where you have to take your own highchair. As i was saying, very cramped place, as we sat down the staff took a while bringing over the menu, i understand they were busy but they should accomadate this. Alson noticed the place was no very disabled friendly, no disabled toilets available. I also needed to change my daughter nappy during the end of the night, and there was no baby changing facilities, again, i think this is discusting. I could not knock the food, it was gorgeous!! But i think if the place has an update, e.g disables facilities and nappy changing/baby highchairs provided then i think the place could be perfect.

This is a strange pub. The first thing I noticed on walking in was a large food serving counter right in front of me. This was a bit off-putting as I was only popping in for a pint. The food theme seemed to continue throughout the pub the room off to the right appeared to be full of tables laid up for a Christmas party, and all the tables in the other bar area were laid up for food to some degree or another with place mats on all of them. The only place we could seem to sit for a pint was the two bar stools, and even these were the wrong height being too low for the bar. As I said, a strange pub.
Every available nook and cranny, and every beam of the ceiling was plastered with stuff, mostly Christmas decorations which I thought were up a bit early. There wasnt a square inch of space anywhere. Behind the bar (near the Buddha!) was a rack dispensing Stowells Liebfraumilch (does anyone actually drink that any more?). The menus on the wall sported an odd black, white and red colour scheme and offered such delights as Scampi & chips, Prawn Cocktail, Potato wedges, etc. Not entirely unsurprisingly there was only one other table occupied in the pub. The bar area was dominated by a large plasma, which was handy for the staff who could sit and watch X-factor as there wasnt anyone for them to serve.
On the plus side the staff seemed friendly enough, and there was a good choice of ciders Blackthorn, Thatchers Gold and Thatchers Traditional. Also Butcombe and 6X beers on tap.

Some 6mths have passed, and a return was on the cards.Although everything seemed to be the same .The Butcombe wasn,t a great shout, strangley enough..
Opted for the Carvery, and found the meat,i had the Pork/Beef had very little taste..My friend pointed out ,that there appeared to be more tables than before, and looking around at the sardine of people in there, did make me ponder..After doing Carveries for the ammount of time they have ,i think it should be improving on these comments, not going backwards.or stagnating..this being the case i think complacency has set in..

A great family place to eat out at. Decent carvery with plenty to eat.
There's vegetarian options available which aren't fantastic but edible. Well worth the visit.

Returned too this watering hole after a couple of years,Carvery in my opinion still as good as before, although prices have risen. And it,s had a splash of paint and general tidy up.Liked it then like it now,A good well cooked carvery,i find is always a welcome sight, not good for the figure but,you have too let your hair down, and it,s always safer than the pre-packed microwave fayre that tends to adorn alot of menu,s these days.

Always a few ales on. Good value food. A bit of a conveyor belt approach to orders. Carvery is very good but don't expect too much of the free soup....it's about the right price. Can get a bit crowded.

Probably the best sunday carvery lunch for miles around and only 6.99! (25-09-05)

Rapid service by a very efficient staff.
