please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Slightly rough and ready back street boozer. What would have been originally a small one or two room pub has been extended though to the back in a series of quirky rooms which offer interesting nooks and crannies. There is the option of sitting out the back or the front - neither are very attractive or pleasant options, but at least you can sit in the fresh air.

The rooms are fairly basic and it has the feel of a student pub with modest decor and furniture. The room right at the back, past the toilets, is the billiard table room. Three cask ales on offer. Doom Bar is the regular, with two or three guests from such as Sharps, Black Sheep, St. Austell and Purity. Prices are good - on my visit it was £3 a pint.

Food not offered - just as well, it's not a clean looking place. Good for crisps and a pint of beer, but little more than that. Barman very friendly and pleasant. Loud punk music played in the main bar on our visit. We sat out in the rear beer garden which does catch the sun.

There is a small selection of real ale, well kept, as well as the usual lagers, etc. The quirky layout makes for an interesting visit. An attraction for some (but not for me) is the loud juke box.
Seems to be popular with students during term time.

Basic boozer serving Pride, Doom Bar, Black Sheep Bitter and Bowman Swift One on our visit. Came in here to watch football as Guide Dog wasn't showing it and a good option for that.

Popular, no-nonsense boozer with decent, reasonably- priced beer from Hammerpot etc. Toilets could do with a clean.

Should be able to take #2 bus from shopping ctr to top of road but we couldnt find the stop & had 5 taxi instead. The Avenue is not a pub name that suggests the type of traditional boozer which I seek out but attd comments suggested it to be worth a visit. Distressed wood floor in main (front) bar room, plain wood tables, chairs, stools, barstools, fireplace & coupla of gaming machines to left, plasma showing skysports score updates. Unremarkable carpetted section to rear of bar then a corridor to the loos & a small pool room at far end, before this a little offshoot to the left with awful out-of-place sofas but, to the right, thankfully, more traditional wooden seating. Cant remember the beer garden but have a note stating nice weathered outdoor furniture. Ringwood Best, Pride, 6X, and Doombar in good shape. Not bad.

A cosy pub with a good choice of real ale.

Once inside the front door the drinker is welcomed by an old fashioned dark oak bar area which is very welcoming. The back rooms of the pub give clues to the fact that at some point this must have been a genuine 'public house' as the little rooms really give the impression that this was once somebody's house. This feature is a big plus.

If I still lived in the area this would be a cracking local and when I come down to soton I make an effort to go there.

My only criticism is that they have removed the billiards table from one of the back rooms and replaced this with a couple of sofas. Having said that the sofas were comfortable.

There isn't much of merit in Southampton these days, but by visiting this pub you will be rewarded with a decent relaxing night out and ensure that one of the few positives in this once great town will remain for many years to come.

Spent many years in there. Superb local. Staggering distance of the chinky and pizza place. good boozy bar not many like left.

Excellent city pub with a student feel, serving a good food and a nice range of real ales. Can be busy and seating is limited, but well worth checking out.
