user reviews of the Archery Tavern, Bayswater

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

This was a 9/10 pub, probably spent cumulative 500 hours drinking, chatting, socialising there (but was never part of the "backroom" crowd).
Featured in every London "Historic Pub" guide ...
One of few Hall & Woodhouse tied houses outside the West country (Badger beers) ...
But lease belonged to Church Estates, who maybe had problems with licenced premisise on their books (how 19th'C), or more probably were looking to maximise site rental !
Whatever the Archery despite its 200 year old history could not survive ...
Its now a posh French Restaurant, very good by all accounts, but how many of us ex-regulars can afford a 90 meal more than once or twice a year ?
We now use the nearby Victoria, guess Fullers would never let this happen to one of their "trophy historic" pubs ?

A very sad loss, I spent many happy evenings in this pub when I used to work at Paddington, always a good selection of well kept beers, and a proper back room with a dart board and fire. Another nail in the coffin of the great British Boozer.

This is a serious loss.

It is indeed now a restaurant - French, so I gather, not that I will be going there needless to say

Bad news
Sign on hoarding gives notice of application to open a bar/restaurant on the site
One of my favourite London pubs looks destined to become just a happy memory

all boarded up this week so fingers crossed it will return as a pub soon

Closed since 3rd January 2006.

Can only echo the statement below - used to be pre Cornwall stop off, so hope it reopens, but can definitely recommend the Victoria!
hotrods - 2 Apr 2006 09:53
Lets hope it remains a pub and re - opens soon. In the meantime, if you're in the area, I'd recommend The Victoria in Strathearn Place - a Fullers pub about 5 minutes walk away

Here's the gen about The Archery. Church Charities owns the building, and Hall & Woodhouse, whose lease expired 31 Dec, chose not to renew due to an increase in the costs. Fullers, Youngs, and other brewers & pub companies are talking with Church Charities about re-opening The Archery

Always an essential visit before a long train trip to Cornwall. Quiet but friendly atmosphere

I highly recommend this pub - it has good beer (Hall and Woodhouse range), a traditional interior and a pleasant atmosphere for socialising. It is also conveniently close to Paddington station.

Handy for Paddington and (as luck would have it) the Royal Lancaster Hotel. Arrived for a late nightcap to find a trad ambience and an agreeably raffish clientele. Enjoyed it lots.

Nice looking pub, lots of history... shame about the landlord and beers on tap... both nasty

Nice quite pub, keep beer well, excellent badgers. Good food, top landlord/eccentric quizmaster. Only disappointing thing is the piped 80's music

This pub a great place to spend a couple of hours drinking good beer and either chatting or playing darts. Traditional decor is attractive and unspoilt. Great mix of customers and nicely priced too.

simply fabulous.
the ale was delicious, so was the house red. the landlady was very friendly too.

finding a pub in london that keeps its beer as well as this pub is a hard business these days.

Popped in for a quick one after work on friday and was impressed. Excellent pint of Badger, nice staff, and though I didn't have any, the food looked great too.

This is a splendidly traditional pub, where customers of all nationalities are made very welcome. I am afraid that I am at a complete loss to understand why Joe Green - see previous comment - appears to have formed the view that my earlier posting on 13 April 2005 indicated otherwise.
Perhaps, as a "non English" person - to use his words - he needs to brush up his language skills if he wishes to contribute regularly to this website.

Decent and friendly pub. Good beer. We visited just three days after the post of 13 April, on a Saturday morning. It wasn't busy, but as non 'English people' perhaps we should apologise for having had the audacity to venture through the door.

Marvellously traditional pub, a very enjoyable visit last Sunday afternoon.
It's a crying shame that a pub such as this will never be as busy as it deserves to be any more - it's undoubtedly because all the English people seem to have moved out of this part of London

This is the best pub in London - but don't tell anyone else!

An excellent, welcoming local with the best pint of Badger in the country. Always friendly. Food OK. As Andy says, a good place for a quiet game of darts. Sit outside and watch the world go by in summer. I make an effort to visit every time I go to London.

Quite simply a most marvellous pub.

Been here many times and always fabulous. Friendly atmosphere, good food and an excellent pint of Badger. Great place for an early evening game of darts. My favourite London pub.

if you get the chance to visit this pub day time morning, do so .

Visited this pub for the first time with friends over from the US. The staff and locals were brilliant, we took part in the pub quiz and one of the locals even went over the road and booked a table in the Indian for us so we could finish the quiz before the restaurant closed. Beer is first class and there's the novelty factor of horses going in and out of the stables behind the pub.
Chris - 16 Apr 2004 14:53
I lived in London for 15 months - the Archery was a great 'local'. I enjoyed the Sussex bitter too. Bob's previous comments on the Indian joint across the road are spot on - great combination!

Very fine ale on tap just before Christmas 2003. Most impressive atmosphere and good simple pub-food as well. Will be returning whenever in the area again.

Once again, in September 2003, nice beer festival. Warm place.
Gilles - 29 Oct 2003 17:27
I loved this place. We were there in 2000 and started each evening with a pint at the Archery. Very good Indian restaurant across the street
bob - 18 Jul 2003 18:12
Just by Lancaster Gate, a very nice Local in a very quiet street with mixed people (local riders and smart users of the Lancaster Hotel). Well kept Badger Ales. By this time (From April 7th to 16th), a nice IPA at 1.50, served with warm smile.
Keep it secret!
