user reviews of the Fox, Corfe Castle

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

So, one post on 9th July, one post on 10th July and none at all on either 11th or 12th. And this is "Officially the busiest pub site..."?

Anyway, more importantly, the Fox in Corfe Castle was definitely open when I walked past on 7th July. Didn't get a chance to visit though, but did get into a couple of other Corfe pubs so more reviews from me over the weekend.

Looked as if there was building work going on inside today.

Rumour has it that this has closed for good.

I had a shock initially as I didn't immediately spy the gravity-fed Abbot Ale, London Pride and TT Landlord (£3.30) behind the bar. Fortunately my powers of observation returned soon enough and the TT Landlord proved to be an excellent pint. Addlestones Cloudy seemed to be the only draught cider with no local offerings (draught or bottled) which was disappointing. Superb beer garden in the true sense (i.e. it has lots of flowers and plants which looked lovely on Saturday) but not really a view of the castle from it unless you are standing up. The inside of the pub is dated and some would argue in need of a bit of a deep-clean but authentic-pub aficionados don't worry about such things! The Ploughman's lunch for £6 was really quite good especially the home-pickled onion and local bread.

Classic old boozer with raggedy garden and ales straight from the barrel. Wadworth 6x was a bit limp and flat last Sunday. They also had Speckled Hen and Abbot I think but couldn't try those because the place shut at 3.00 p.m, which seemed bizarre on a sunny Sunday with a garden full of people! Would give it another go but the beer would have to improve...

Nice pub, no kids allowed inside to spoil the atmos- excellent! Gravity served Real ales are unfortunately hit and miss. Garden lovely in the summer - rickety old furniture - lots of it - and fairy lights in the trees!

Well like all pubs it seems to depend on when you visit as to the reception you get. My wife and I popped in on a break at Corfe and loved the place. The front room was like a sitting room and very cosy. My ale was perfect and our food was fine. Locals were not that engaging but not obnoxious. This is a very old fashioned pub and when it passes Corfe will be a little less quaint.
odbod - 25 Aug 2010 15:29
This is an old fashioned quiet pub tucked away in the back street. The landlord seems to have run this place for many years and has all the real ale casks surrounding him in the bar area. Three or four well kept beers on gravity, but when we were there, they were all main stream ales: Speckled Hen, Tribute, Six X, and Abbot. Reasonably priced though, going by what we are getting used to at 3+ / pint.

You can tell this pub is the oldest in the village.
Not owned by any brewery.
They are not interested in making money.
Beer prices are very cheap. Just a good old drinking hole.
We didnt try the food. We didnt like the looks of other people eating it.
Worth popping in though and seeing for yourself.

Good selection of Real Ales in behind the bar barrels.
However, not the best Timothy Taylor Landlord I have ever tasted, and not cheap either.
Fantastic pub garden with its various assortment of garden furniture.
A very English way to spend a summers afternoon.
BarStallBert - 5 Nov 2009 17:34
Agree with pubquisitor entirely. In for lunch today, 5 of us. Miserable reception from landlord, despite my dad trying to fire up a conversation! Timothy Taylo's Landlord - flat, old, sour. Lemonade thrown into a glass. no offer of ice or lemon. Sat in garden, furniture in very dubious state, and decided not to stay for lunch if beer is kept and served so bad why the hell should I give my hard earned money for food too? See Greyhound review for what happened next...
fatbob1968 - 26 Oct 2009 21:19
Went in there the other night with a couple of colleagues after putting our noses round the door of the Greyhound and deciding that"mmmm Naah - don't think so". I have to say that it's a lot lot better than it was the last time I went there. Must have caught the landlord on a bad week last time!! Pub was friendly - even the strange woman sitting in a corner just inside the back door was more friendly (well, a bit. Similar to Col. Clebb of 007 fame this time rather than a great wite shark with toothache as she had been previously). There were more customers than in the greyhound and they appeared to be locals. Beer was first class - Tribute and 6X. Yes, we'll go there again - if the landlady will allow!!!!
pubquisitor - 19 Oct 2009 21:41
Has Addlestones. Deserves a true real cider, then I'd never boither with the Greyhound again.
jgurney1 - 19 Aug 2009 20:43
While I don't agree with the comment about selling short life beer (it makes no sense to potentially buy something that may go off and you can't sell) we popped in last week and was disappointed with what looked so promising from the outside. As has been. said all the usual suspects, London Pride Abbott Ale etc. Why oh why sell beers that you always see in tied houses if you are free of tie? I like beer form the barrel but it shouldn't be an excuse to sell it at 22c. Cellar temps should be between 10 & 15c. Our Prides were warm and flat with not so much as an attempt to chill the barrel with even a wet bar towel.
That said the pub has bags of character, the garden was lovely and I personally found the gent I presume to be the Landlord polite and amiable.
daveE - 8 Aug 2009 01:02
Unobtrusive terraced pub with an unspoilt interior. Its quiet cosiness represents a kind of pub fast disappearing from city and village alike. Beer (Taylor's Landlord) was fine and good value, but it was a shame that as a free house there were no local products on offer and the rest of the range was a Greene King stitch-up. However I'm hardly surprised Pubquisitor got a chilly reception if he gave voice to his bizarre and completely unfounded theories of beer agents and short-life selling. Perhaps all the discredited city traders have downsized to a quiet life in rural Dorset and are keeping their eye in by trading on the lucrative Old Speckled Hen futures market?
WebelMC - 9 Jun 2009 19:43
Been there a couple of times. First to have a beer and something to eat - which took absolutely ages to be prepared and get to me, and on a rrival was of very mediocre standard - and the second time just to confirm that the landlady really was as strange as I thought on my first visit. The beer had a "staleness" about it. True, it came straight from the barrel, but it had no life, was flabby, "cardboardy" in flavour due to oxidation and really past its best. The landlord or whoever looks after the beer should have noticed this and stopped selling. The brewery was not at fault - I suspect the landlord (or landlady) probably got a good deal from the beer agent, or whoever supplies them, by buying short-life beer; this is pretty common now and customers should watch out for it.
Anyway, my quiet comments to the landlord (also a rather peculiar fellow of somewhat prickly nature) were certainly not positively received, but that's probably because I'm not a regular/local, and I certainly won't be one if the standards of service, food and especially beer don't improve. Unfortunately, the place is a free house so it looks as if the publican and his female companion will be there carrying regarldess selling "off" beer, being exceptionally rude to local and non-local customers and providing a pretty poor hostelry until hell freezes over. I feel sorry for you folks in Corfe Castle having 3 pretty grim pubs so close to each other and the other one so far out of the centre of the village and too small to take all the potential defectors.

It's such a pity that I've had to make such comments. The Fox Inn is a lovely little pub - just a pity about the people who "run" it.
pubquisitor - 16 May 2009 12:12
i went for a meal here today i have to say everything was perfect, its great to see the beer straight outta the barrel and it improves the taste so much. I had jumbo cod nd chips and i do believe that the cod was half a whale as the portion size was huge. Also the waiter dave was very friendly and also extremly helpful when i needed advice on directions. The Landlord graham was also extremly funny and friendly and made you feel wlecome. Would always recommend this pub to a friend

A MUST VISIT FOR ALL

This is a good old fashioned coaching inn. It oozes charm and character
and not a bad pint either. Old school landlord and nice garden (just like at home) I have not tried the food, but good for a post lunch drink.
behindbars - 4 Mar 2009 14:46
pretty rubbish food but garden is lovely and the front room is nice. Where the locals go for drinks in the evening.
ecudc - 4 Jun 2008 13:24
The place oozes charm and character. The view of the castle from the garden is second to none. The beer is poured straight out of the barrel.

Oh - it could be so good. But with so many local breweries to choose from, the beer is that which you can buy anywhere in the country. And it was sour.

I walked in thinking it might even rate 10/10. I came out feeling that 6/10 was generous.
MankyBadger - 11 May 2008 14:33
Lovely looking pub. Unfortunately none of the character has been retained inside. Food was OK beer was close to vinegar.
davidashford - 30 Sep 2007 18:22
Awful boil in the bag undercooked food and awful decor. The only good thing is the garden.
imp123 - 13 Sep 2007 17:21
went here last sunday....done out in awful 80's decor, the rancid smell of boil in the bag cod and a gone off pint of timothy taylor that tasted like drinking a pint of sarsons vinigar.....brilliant..
epping2ongar - 27 Jan 2007 15:16
Tip-top!

Good drink and meals - a much better bet than the "Greyhound" and the Bankes Arms" which are both just around the corner in the Square.

I first went to this pub way back in 1987 before it was all done up as it is today, it was like stepping back in time. I spent a couple of new years eves in there and we all had a fantastic evening, Graham and Annette are fabulous hosts, sharp witted and funny, and Graham has the driest humour ever. Well worth a visit if you are ever in Corfe castle.
mistymoon - 28 Apr 2005 11:49
This is one of the best in the area - it doesn't matter where you go in this world, somebody will have always heard of the Fox at Corfe. Graham and Annett run this friendly if not a little quirky at times local pub, and fun and games always await the weary traveller! Take my advise, if they seem a little rude, its only because they like you...
davinian - 23 Mar 2005 15:28
really like this pub got a great atmoshere with some gorgeous food and drink, real traditional English pub
taylor12 - 20 Mar 2005 23:49
I've had the pleasure of taking many 'overseas' visitors to a really traditional English pub - with great beers, and superb food! Thank you, Graham and Anne for 'maintaining' such a wonderful pub! In the summer - what a garden!
peterpenberthy - 15 Jan 2005 00:38
After a cold walk on the mast, from swanage i arrived at Corfe Castle, all i wanted was a good ale, a good sandwhich and a warm fire to warm up by. I walked around the beautiful village and came across the Fox. AS i walked in i instantly was warmed by the fire and greeted with a friendly smile for Graham, the owner of thw pub. I intended to stay for a hour but my visit lasted for a few days, meeting the wonderful staff at the pub,the great chef Sam and the wonderful waitresses Jane and Elise. The locals introduced me to the life of Corfe , what a wonderful life it is. what a wonderful pub
Ricardo Illiffio - 8 Apr 2004 05:46
This pub used to be my local. Great attmosphear, no duke box, no pool table, no darts, got to take your own crib bord, but they have got an ice machine now.
David - 26 Sep 2003 18:50
Old style local pub with good range of food lunchtime. Real ales straight out of gravity feed casks - Speckled hen, Thomas Hardy & 6X. Worth a visit if you're in the area
