Called in for some food and a pint whilst staying nearby. A busy Sunday night, with music and TV competing, plus a spirited pool game being played, but it felt safe enough and the food was plentiful and well cooked. London Pride and Doombar on as reals. Only downer was a guy trying to ponce a phone call off other customers.

After the traveller stabbings, I'd say its best to stay away from this place !

They occasionally have a singer on but I haven't known a band for a year or so.....

awful service? it was a little busy last night and there was delay at times at the bar, but I wouldn't have said the barstaff were awful!

awful service awful barstaff

The new manageress seems to have sorted the bar staff problem out, the only ones left are the good ones! I'm disappointed that the Tetley still hasn't gone down in price - I spose it was a cheap attempt to get cheaper beer! I still don't think some sort of special offer would go amiss....

used to work here, the manager is great, i reackon she'll turn the pub around and its good to see she's getting rid of the rubbish staff! The atmosphere is good, should have more entertainment though. I was really sad to leave but I'll be back, as i'm working in the wardwick tavern in Derby which is a Spirit pub! yay!
the regulars are friendly, made work more enjoyable.
overall great pub in my opinion!!!

The barstaff were extremely friendly, especially the pierced barman working on Friday night. Don't think too much of the manager though. She seems to be not very customer friendly (very arrogant and rude in fact) and I believe in this game that you should be a hell of a lot more welcoming to your customers.

Would consider offering the aforementioned barman a position at my pub as he seems to be the proverbial diamond in sh*t.

"half red-headed barman and asian barmaid seem "very" friendly, not sure new manager would condone this"

What can I say? We are all friendly at The Great Western. Perhaps you could post with your username next time. Thanks

Been drinking there for years on and off, and it is much better than it has ever been - I think the staff need a permanent manager to look after them - the current manager is only temporary - perhaps the new manageress will whip them into shape! Would benefit from a special offer on one of the beer and lagers - say 1.70 a pint of Tetleys? I'd drink twice as much then......got to be worth a try!

very cheap beer and food.best off going down on a monday or thursday night for the 2-4-1 on the food. half red-headed barman and asian barmaid seem "very" friendly, not sure new manager would condone this

" I've been a regular in the Western for many years now and I must say the service I recieved last night was a complete and utter shambles! Nothing wrong with my bitter or my dinner, its just the staffs attitude to work is diabolical! Members of staff sitting on the back of the bar, having a conversation with their friends when there was empty glasses and dirty plates needing to be collected, playing infantile tricks on one another (throwing liquid over one another)and altogether lousy service from all but two of the staff. I hope when the new landlady comes she gets rid of these "children" and gets some staff who actually want to work for their money ! "

I actually work in The Great Western so I can't say too much about the above statement. Indeed, I was working that night so hopefully I was one of the two members of staff who gave you satisfactory service. I can only apologize to you on behalf of The Great Western and hope that this one bad night won't turn you away from our pub.

" Still, the barman with the red hair is as sexy as though "

*blushes*

A great pub, still waiting for the right staff there though. Still, the barman with the red hair is as sexy as though. Highly recommended and reasonably priced.

Was a pretty bad pub before, only full of old locals. but now it's been refurbished and it's a completly different pub. A good mix of people - young and old. On Mondays and Thursdays they have '2 for 1' meals, and drinks are reasonably priced.
