Lovely little pub. It has previously had troubles but is now run by a lovely girl who is building up. Friendly staff and very clean inside. Good selections of beers on draft and bottles. House spirits are good value! I got a pint of fosters for £3! Cheap offers on shots. Jukebox with every song imaginable on. Music every Friday and Sunday. Free dart board. Worth people popping in. Don't believe what people say about this place. It's lovely

I've only ever walked past this pub - it scares me!!

I agree with brightonbeat, a horrid place. I lent a guy a light outside and he refused to give it back to me. Frequented by people that love their 10am beer, how they afford to do that all day I will never know.....

If they can't control the abusive and drunken clientele from hassling innocent shoppers and people passing by they're sure to get shut down before too long.
It has to be said that being spat at and called a c*nt' on a Saturday afternoon trip to Sainsbury's is not my idea of fun....

I am however fully aware that most of the people who use this pub are harmless, and am also glad it exists so that the same people don't ruin the pubs that i enjoy a pint in.

A unique drinking experience. Best hair of the dog pub in Brighton! Friendly staff. Provides an essentiel social service for the elderly which keeps the council tax down. Near the 21 bus stop. Hard to get a seat in the morning hard not to get a seat in the evening. Definitely a pub for the dedicated amongst us!

Get a pint in the summer and sit on the benches out front. Plenty of people watching to be had down by the level.

Wouldn't take my Mum here. She doesn't like horse racing.

Site is sadly being abused by the likes of "Smif", the review of 24/9/07 should be ignored. Bat & Ball is an ordinary, pub enjoyed by straight, gay, black, white, young and old alike, and may it stay that way!
DaveHarley - 11 Oct 2007 09:29
there are plenty of reasonable comments concerning pubs' clientele on this site. the comment by "Smif" is not one of them.

I'm interested as to whether a pub's clientele are hetero or homo - so are most people !
JohnBonser - 3 Oct 2007 13:40
Will 'smif' please arse off. Who cares if a pub's clientele are hetrosexual or homosexual. Incidentally, it's not one of Brighton's better pubs but worth a quick pint nonetheless just to spite Smif's idiot fringe.

it maybe a lot of things, this pub- but it ain't full off 'hommos'
drunks and over 50's mainly.
JohnnyCrow - 24 Sep 2007 13:33
yet another pub full of homos makes me want to puk

We went here one evening and discovered a pub quiz was about to start. "Brilliant!" we thought,"bit of a laugh" but actually it was a really weird experience. Its such a small pub, there were only 3 other teams and it was obvious that these guys came every week and were not too welcoming of strangers trying to join in. It wasnt anything in particular, nobody was outright rude to us or anything, it was just a bit frosty. We didnt feel welcome enough to make a return visit anyway.

Avoid at all cost, rough place, need to be over 50 to blend in be drunk and ur ok

Thought we would try something new whilst in Brighton. Friendly enough. Karaoke afternoon on a Sunday, brilliant!!??!! Unfortunately it attracted all the drunks which were surprisingly not all that bad at singing. One chap, who was dressed in Doc Martins with swastikas and SS flashes on jeans did a charming rendition of 'I fought the Law and the Law Won' by the Clash, how appropriate. Lovely pub, if you like that sort of thing.

Very violent fight erupted in there the other night just as we walked up to the door. Woldn't be so bad, but it's so small that flying glass could et anyne in there. There's better pubs within 100 yards in any direction.

The bat & ball is now under new management and it still opens at 9am. I have enjoyed many a night in this pub, the other customers were friendly and the staff were even better. Top evening.

I think this pub is great. Nice bar staff and friendly old boys who like abit of a gas. Lovely pub dog as well.

Reading the other comments, I must have been lucky the night I was in as I found it fine. Yes, the locals had had a little to drink but I thought that was the idea. Otherwise it was OK, nothing special but noy bad.

The Bat and Ball now opens at around 9am/10am and closes early. It's clientelle consists almost entirely of belligerent drunks, one step away from the park bench.

Alternatively nip to the somerfield down the road and pick up a bottle of white lightning (3 litres for the price of two most of the time) and go and sit in the level. Infinitely preferable to this pub!
reverendlionelblair - 23 Jan 2006 22:52
It's got a huge Bat & Ball stuck on the front. Not much else to recommend it. In fact don't bother nip 25 yards along the road to the Winkle, which thankfully dosen't have anything but sign out front
