Went here last in 2006 and drank to the sound of raucous singing (which I am all for) I wouldnt have come to a surprise if someone had decided to "roll out the barrel".

These place was frequented by my mate who was on the the racing scene in Epsom before he became a 'Newmarketeer'

Only went twice but the pub has given me some good memories hence I looked it up on this site.

I notice it has closed and hope that it re-opens as you never know, in 2016 I may decide to pop in again.

Mad Goose to die for

Went there on Derby Day with a few people. Cricket was on (excellent). Second time we'd been there. Once again, bar staff / owners cheerful and friendly, one of the more welcoming pubs in Epsom- not a "locals only, outsiders be prepared to feel uncomfortable" type place. Recommended.

Went into a pub in this exact location last the week before last and asked how much is it for a pint of lime and soda - the chp said we don't have soda so I asked what about water and lime - he said 80p
Then just a few days ago I was queuing behind a man who was embarrassed because he wanted a sandwich but was told the others are upstairs (no customers up there) - then a very depressed character arrived and I asked how much was a pint of water and lime and it had gone up 40p in less than a week - I walked straight out the door
I believe they have come from another pub that they put out of business

Reading the previous reviews it would seem that missywissy has issues! Best leave them to outside this forum. I, for one, am looking forward to visting the Ladas this w/e. Having been a part-time habitue I feel certain that the hard work that S&G put into the WH will be repeated here. Let's hope that they can really make a go of this pub which, sadly, has been "traditional" for too long. I am afraid that missywissy is missyguided to think that by preventing pubs develop they will continue to be succesful. Look around; the evidence is against you as "trad" pubs are shutting everywhere. My very first visit to the Ladas elicited a "wadda you want" from the then barman....that was my first and only visit to the Ladas as was. I am sure I will have a more friendly greeting this next visit.

Oh epsomaledrinker and jeffdaff, lets stop all this bitching about these two pubs, we all wish both pubs will get up and running properly soon, so lets stop acting like a couple of spoilt kids throwing their toys out of the pram, and get on with the job of having a pint or two..!
missywissy - 10 May 2010 07:23
Its a shame they did not do any "clearing up " as you call it, in the White Horse before they left, or even living in that squalor they left behind. The new people are trying to do their best to get the place livable and get some custom back after the place was left to neglect . What ever happens to The White Horse in the future lets give them a little support now! Hoping it will stay an old stalwart of a good english RACING TOWN pub as it was built for many years ago, the same as The Ladas, The Amato, and the rest of the "old pubs" in Epsom, many new people forget this IS a racing town, yet one by one they are taking our history away from us, lets keep some traditional pubs going on in our area, and not try and change them into "Gastro, or Bistro pubs".

Any music fans out there? Well I recommend the band that will be playing in the Ladas this coming Friday 23rd from 7.30 to 8.00 I think. They are called 'DUO' and consist of a bass guitarist, Pete and lead guitarist Tim. I've seen them before and they are an absolute knockout!

Also if you are a real ale drinker the Ladas is the place to be, especially when 'Mad Goose' is on tap!!! I hope it's there on Friday!!!!
epsomaledrinker - 21 Apr 2010 19:36
Wow! What a turnover, now the highest rated pub in Epsom. That's all down to the hard work put in by Stuart and Gemma and the support they have had from their well meaning locals. Great real ales good larger and a friendly service. Quiz night on Mondays and music coming soon. Sky TV too! See you there! Mine's a Doom Bar or a Mad Goose!!!
epsomaledrinker - 22 Mar 2010 01:42
This was my Fathers local 40 years ago,a swish gin and tonic saloon and a stable lads public bar. In the late '70's I remember seeing Alan Minter park up his Bentley and pop in ...but over the last few years it became a sad watering hole full of ullage.
NOW ALL CHANGE......
Stuart and Gemma have taken the pump in hand and I am sure that their vim and vigour will transform the place.I wish them good luck with their new home,...and my "new " Local. Cheers !!
P.S. the Purity Ales Mad Goose is on excellent form
jeffdaff - 18 Mar 2010 22:23
This pub has seriously improved since it was taken over by Stuart and Gemma who used to run the White Horse. For years you could never get a decent pint of real ale in the Ladas, but now Stuart's reputation for selling quality real ales has followed him to the Ladas.
They have transformed this pub from what can only be described as a stark, unfriendly dive, into a warm friendly local where you can make friends with other customers within minutes of them walking in.
I would recommend that anyone looking for a pub to go to where they can truly feel at home should give it a try. You can get good pub food here too.
epsomaledrinker - 11 Mar 2010 17:28
Gemma and Stuart, previously from The White Horse, are to be congratulated for the huge effort they have made in clearing up this neglected pub.
Come and support them and in a few months this will be a great place to be.
They are renowned for their superb real ales and friendly service.
Good Luck to them, they are the hardest working couple going and deserve to succeed.
mrsrockychick - 9 Mar 2010 09:49
WOW - Well worth a visit! :-) This place has totally been turned round by Stuart and Gemma! Maybe im stating the obvious but a pubs reputation is made and kept by its staff, all i can say is that these guys really know how to run a pub! Warm friendly atmosphere, big screen telly (i understand Sky is on the way), decent food, and reasonable prices. what more could you want?

Took me a while to find you guys , but nice to be back in a well run bar again! (unlike the new owners of your old place!)

cokedrinker - 7 Mar 2010 02:15
OHHH sour grapes i feel well i for one feel Stuart and Gemma run a great pub the Ladas has already attracted trade which long since left since Fran and Wendy left the big screen is back in there and some not bad grub, as for the horse all i will say is lifeless and un inviting. Good luck for the future Stuart and Gemma.
epsombeerbelly - 4 Mar 2010 18:11
Now back open and being run by Stuart and Gemma from the White Horse. They have done a lot of work cleaning the place up. Had three beers on last night, Ruddles County, Purity Mad Goose and Doom Bar. Another couple of pumps to be installed. Looks promising.
GuideDogSaint - 23 Feb 2010 08:07
Walked past this pub today, had noticed it had been closed for last few weeks, spoke to a fella scrubbing the patio, who said it was going to be a "regular pub" and opening towards the end of this week, having not been in here for a good couple of years will check it out, fella said they are open "by invitation only" on Derby day, told him I might look for an invite as most boozers in epsom close for the "big day".
bierkellerman - 26 May 2009 19:38
I love this pub, its really trying to turn itself around! It was a right dump before, I honestly believe this pub deserves more custom, and the effort being put in is starting to show... slowly but surely... well done the Ladas!
hedge007 - 4 Feb 2009 11:14
Patrons??? You mean customers, If this pub had real patrons it would still be as good as it was 5 years ago. I travel the country quite a bit, and werever i go there seems to be closed down pubs. Thats without people coming in and threatening to cut (the then managers) throat, in front of paying CUSTOMERS. The last post (parden the pun) must of been written by one of the new management. Hope all is good with the rest of the beer drinking world. Billy Wiz
billywiz - 21 Sep 2008 18:53
The new management are in a difficult position. Having taken the premises back from their previous managers, I think they are doing a brilliant job to restore the place which in my opinion was allowed run down, forcing the previous patrons to leave. You are made feel welcome, the lager is served in excellent condition and nice and cold, and the makeover certainly is a great step from the tired old pub it became.

It is a pleasure to have a beer without children doing their homework at the bar as was the previous case, there is no sign of the manicurist, the dog dung outside or kids being allowed eat pizza at the bar.

What a wonderful change for the better. It's good to be back.
woddums - 16 Sep 2008 22:37
They're doomed! No carpets! They obviously have no idea how cold and expensive that pub must be to run in the winter. I think the 60 second make over left a little to be desired, and as a family pub I don't think so! Not with the connections the present owners appear to have IE threatening to cut throats etc.Any way they are now in direct competition with the Amato which I believe is a good family pub. There will only be one winner there!Thank god it wont be the Ladas under this present mafiosi regime.
billywiz - 12 Sep 2008 19:33
Have no intention of spending my money in this pub now its owned by thugs. Used to be a good sporting pub, plenty of screens and sport activities. Beer was good though food could have been better. Good pub for the boys to meet in. All thats gone to make a bistro? Sooner this pub shuts down and gives the regulars back what they want, then the sooner the regulars might return. New owners please.
sluglegs - 10 Sep 2008 21:41
Friendly? Well i tried to go in today to see what changes had been made as they were ment to open at 5 i got there about 10 past asked if they were open and got the dumb look blank expression and a very blunt no! when i asked if they would be open tonight what was the answer/ Maybe dunno i was then ignored,. Sound friendly to you? This pub was and always will be a boozer nothing more nothing less and lets face it every town needs a boozer or two why naff up the only thing that will work here? Oh yes and i was in there the day the heavies were sent in to remove the old guvners as i remember it threats of neck cutting and all sorts were slung at the then managers friendly? i ask you
epsombeerbelly - 9 Sep 2008 00:00
could the owners not thought of anything original or do they have to steal other people's ideas ? There's a pub 5 mins away from the ladas that's already family friendly. With great homecooked food. Could u not come up with anything better ? There's no room for children to play either. Forget the ladas go to the white horse instead !
tinkerbell - 30 Aug 2008 11:40
This public house has been abused by the former occupiers who were not the tenants, they were instructed to leave the premises by the owner of lease approximately one month ago. The Ladas will reopen next week. (week commencing 25th August 2008). The establishment will not be catering for televised sporting events and will offer a friendly atmosphere with emphasis on family orientated facilities. There will be a concerted effort to offer an extensive food and wine menu with a programme to refurbish the decoration over an achievable and workable timetable. The Ladas will be under new management with effect from the opening date, and will welcome new customers to their local pub. If you want to experience an old fashioned welcome without the headache of televised sporting events drowning out your conversation, then try the new regime at The Ladas.

This is definitely not a pub to recommend unless you like lots of noisy men, beer and sport. It has a bad reputation and i certainly wouldn't eat in this establishment unless you want a drunk guy head first in your food.

Visited this pub during a recent visit to UK. Lovely old pub with friendly staff and the lunch we had was very good. Clean bathroom. Patio small but nice. Made a nice change from some of the other establishments we visited during our visit. My idea of an English pub!
exbrit62 - 11 Jan 2007 17:12
An imposing building on the outside gives way to a small old-fashioned one-bar local within.

And it's just what you'd expect a suburban back-street boozer to be like. Quiet, yet friendly, but very red. Its not horrendous, but it's nothing special, the kind of pub that you wouldn't go to for a cracking night out, but you wouldn't mind as your local.
