really bad pub. i went last saturday and the first thing we saw was a massive punch up at the back of the pub, not a doorman in sight. music would have been ok if the dj didnt keep mashing 2 tunes together making a mess of it. the people in the pub were so young i would have said under-age. it was a total waste of money paying 4.00 to get in, we had 1 drink and left. there are so many better pubs i wouldnt waste ur money or time here.
Saffira - 10 Mar 2009 18:40
I only ever go in here as a starter bar as it has lots of different shots. other than that I would give it a miss
back2reality18 - 18 Jan 2008 18:23
No great loss if you do get barred from hear. pretty poor.
chopin - 15 Jan 2008 17:19
am i the only one who thinks the name is dire?

'Bar Me' as in 'I would like to be Barred'

This is another dreadful Bournemouth bar full of louts and bottle drinks.

I've only ever been in BarMe once and that was a while ago so i can't really slate it too much. Alot of people in Bournemouth have told me it's a bit shit but i might have to go and check it out for myself. I wouldn't begin to comment on the place without actually going there first (Unlike some people i feel)
anonymous - 6 Jun 2006 14:44
I'm from 'up North' and I went to Bournemouth for the football Easter weekend. This Bar was absolutley brilliant!
Everywhere else was so stuck up and snotty and major expensive!
There were 4 of us, all girls, and we loved it, we just like having a laff and we will talk to anyone, no matter who they are, as long as they are right with us, and Bar Me was so much fun, not full of snobs, I will recommend it to anyone and everyone!!!!
Allie25 - 18 Apr 2006 13:19
I played a gig here last night with my band Freak Circus, and I have to say I liked the whole feel of the place. Plus, on Wednesday nights, its giving the people of Bournemouth another live music venue, with cheap drinks a bonus. Its also the first place we've hosted an "air guitar" competition in too!
wolfman - 6 Apr 2006 22:24
Loved the place, doorman very friendly, everyone in there all seemed to be having fun and the poles up on the stage made the whole evening more interesting.
Treesy17 - 22 Mar 2006 14:20

I agree with ellie1985 but all she needed to put was simply DON'T GO THERE!

If you need any reasons for this please see below.
livemusicrocks - 27 Sep 2005 17:13

djtaff69barme - 22 Aug 2005 10:45
What a legendary place, it's on the up, cool staff, but quick question to charlie hilton, when did you take him home and what did you do to him. By the way just to let you, i have just finished working there, and he is fully aware of the comment on here, so to let you know....so explain fully.

And by the way it's well on the up, keep it coming, is now becoming one of the best venues in Bournemouth
andyisaaa - 19 Jul 2005 15:48
So, im not saying i'm a huge fan of bar me, but seriously people it seems as though all you that have something to complain about have spent an awful long time in the place analysing it all!!
The moral of the story : IF YOU DONT LIKE THE PLACE, DONT GO THERE!
ellie1985 - 12 Apr 2005 11:14
Its terrible. Horrific. Im all for having fun but I can do it without chavs, slappers, pink drinks and 'party' games. When is a place in Bournemouth going to get some imagination and/or combine a decently priced drink with decent music?
benjamin22 - 7 Apr 2005 16:18
i actually think Bar me is a good laugh!!! its whatever you make it at the end of the day! the staff are all kool and there is a fit bar man called paul and on tuesday 29th march i took him home with me, lol! i went back in there last nite and he didnt really talk to me but hey thats men 4 ya! i dunno whether the staff actually look at this but if they do let him no that he has hurt me, thanks!
charlie_hilton - 2 Apr 2005 19:08
sorry ment to say (4) let us all geuss you work there??
anonymous - 27 Mar 2005 14:35
So anonymous of 26th Jan, a pub is now to be judged solely on its takings is it because it's funny that you don't actually have anything positive to say about the place? It's every bit as bad as Wh1tey, Adam Solley and Laura say it is. It was a good pub with decent ales in its incarnation as the Jug of Ale but these days the music is played at ear bleeding volume making it nigh on impossible to order your drinks. The glass on the floor is rarely swept up. People who are clearly drunk are happily served which is and has been illegal for decades. The toilets are minging but at least the doorstaff are pleasant which is the only positive thing that I've got to say about this place. Unlike some, I'm not advocating that this place be bombed or closed or whatever but the various semi-literate anonymous posters who claim that 'we don't know how to enjoy ourselves' or 'that we are too old to drink here' (are you not planning on getting old then?) or that we 'should drink elsewhere' are missing the point. Old Christchurch Rd and Bmth town centre in general is full of identikit pubs but at least when this place was the Jug of Ale you actually had a proper pub to provide some balance and some choice. Now there is nothing of the sort except for the Goat & Tricycle which I'm sure is hated by the people who drink in here not least because you might actually have to strike up a conversation with someone. All we are asking for is one 'proper' pub along Old Christchurch Rd. Isn't too much to ask for is it? And Darren, there isn't a Goose and Granite(with an e)in Bmth you muppet.
johnkn7 - 6 Feb 2005 13:40
leave the place alone!
it takes more now than it did as the hogshead so no matter what you all say it is liked by a lot of people!

but, so not THE best staff- good byt not the best, and hazel- you now hate the place and dont work there so ur comments are invalid!
anonymous - 26 Jan 2005 17:53
As far as I can understand, the point of this website is to give people a range of opinions about various pubs and bars that we have been in to allow them to make an informed choice of where to spend their money on a night out.

Therefore, people saying "if you dont like it just dont go there" is the most redundant and sterile argument I have ever heard as I have no intention of going there again. I am just trying to make sure that people do not make the same mistake I did.

It is my humble opinion that Bar Me is the worst bar in Bournemouth. Nothing anybody has said has made me think otherwise.

I think it is damning indication of the quality of this pub when, as I have said before, people choose to attack other posters rather than try to defend a bar that is truely indefencable.

Its crap.
anonymous - 24 Jan 2005 10:30
oh dear oh dear oh dear, ok firstly Wh1tey23, the fact that your from colchester means that i shouldn't even have to dignify your answer with a response as u are blatently a dole scum chav! but i will, ok so u want reasons for why bar me should stay:
1. it is one of the only non pretentious bars in bournemouth - if ur too stupid to figure out what that means - it's not full of people who's heads are so far up their own arses that they need glass stomachs to be able to see!
2. there is never any trouble with fights - unlike certain other bars in the very close vercinity!
3. the staff are freindly and competant - unlike certain other bars in the very close vercinity, where not only can the staff not speak a word of english - but walk around with a face like a slapped arse all the time!
4. it is actually one of the cheapest bars around
5. it is actually FUN, which i know will be a foreign concept to any of you but never mind!

its been said before but i'll say it again if u don't like it, dont go in! it's not rocket science!
anonymous - 20 Jan 2005 17:41
I would like to point out that 80% of the staff at bar me are in fact students studying for degrees which im sure will enable them to spell the words customer service!! So how about you just do one "wh1tey23".

Peterpenberthy - Who designed you? Bar me is staying... sorry for any inconvience!!

Anonymous No.1 - I hope your looking thru the window that says TOSSER above it!

Kisses xxxx

zoe_day_85 - 17 Jan 2005 21:32
Look, this place is just plain awful.
1) The barstaff are a bunch of munted, cack-handed dogs who would struggle to spell "customer service" let alone deliver it.
2) The whole concept of the place seems to be fake, plastic and tacky.
3) The DJ might as well be playing "Best of Chav 2000" as the music is shite.
4) Oh, and the "cocktails" look and taste like liquid duck.

I could go on believe me.

It seems even the people who are trying to defend this place struggle to find something positive to say about, preffering instead to simply attack what other people have said.

Just do the decent thing and close the place down.
anonymous - 15 Jan 2005 19:11
Originally - the Gas showroom - then an Estate Agency - then the JUG of ALE - superb Hogshead Ale House, loved by all ages! After an amazingly 'ridiculous' (and expensive!) refurb we were presented with the 'plastic' 'Hogshead'! Enough said - it's now called 'Bar Me' ... many of the regulars of the former 'Jug' need say no more ... just 'Bar 'Us'' ... it's complete 'crap' ... probably be sold soon!
peterpenberthy - 15 Jan 2005 00:55
Can someone blast this place, along with it's regulars into orbit. with referance to the email below, horses for courses, everyone understands that differant people like differant pubs, and binge drinking has been going on for years blah blah, but every time i walk pass this place on a weekend night there is trouble and sick - and what are the stupid windows supposed to do? make us curious and want to go in?
anonymous - 12 Jan 2005 11:26
what can you say the butlins of beer, bar me.
cheap and nasty,if you want to go out in bournemouth don't waste your time here.as know one else will...
anonymous - 8 Jan 2005 19:10
for gods sake people get a life! for starters this whole 'binge drinking' thing, this hasent changed for the last 100 years, it has been a british tradition to all go out on a friday or saturday night since pubs first opened! the only difference now is that the government wants to win an election and has decided on this area to attack! and u people who think ur oh so clever, are just buying in to what they want u to! and as far as Bar:[me] is concerned, y not ask the hundreds of regular punters what they think? the problem u people have is that u cant see the room for a diverse society! u have the same kind of narrow minded views as the BNP! if u dont like the place - try thinkin out side the box, and just not going in there? its not rocket science is it?
anonymous - 7 Jan 2005 18:39
Oh dear God, this place is TERRIBLE! Plastic, tacky, sickly...and thats just the drinks! Always liked visiting the Hogshead but now give BarME a wide berth. It truely is one of the worst bars I have ever been to. It might as well have a sign on the door that says "Chavs, kids and slappers welcome". Its pubs like this that give rise to the whole binge drinking, ASBO culture that seems to exist now. Sorry if I sound old at 21 but this place just encourages people to drink alcoholic sugar till your sick everywhere.
Oh, and those things on the windows? About as funny as Whooping Cough.
Shut it down, pleeeease.
anonymous - 4 Jan 2005 16:45
I hate this place. I think the shortest time I've ever had to wait to get served was 15 minutes. The bar staff are all jumped up little tarts who spend more time dancing on the bartop than pulling drinks. Those yarder "cocktail" things are revolting and are mainly ice anyway. There's only a very small area where you're actually allowed to consume your drink. You're not allowed drinks upstairs in the toilets or on the dancefloor.. it ends up that alot of girls leave their drinks on the tables by the dancefloor which is not safe at all. Everywhere you go you are on camera and at risk of appearing on the big plasma screen above the bar. There is very little seating although few people actually dance in this bar.
It's not a relaxing place to drink at all.

absinthe - 2 Jan 2005 19:53
if u don't like it ur too old! fact! to the comments from mr solley and seasidermm, the place is actually taking about 4 times more now, than it did as hogshead! so ur hopes of it going bankrupt are about as realistic as u growing a personality! bar:[me] is not for u so don't come in! it is for people young or old who want to have a good time and let their hair down!the staff are the best in bournemouth and hence they are always try their best to make every night the best ever! why do u people think that because a place isn't what you want you have the right to judge it and condem it? i don't like country and western music but i can still apreciate it and its place in the world! ggrow up and open your minds! the world would be a far better place with out people like u!
anonymous - 2 Jan 2005 16:24
i work at bar [me] an must say i love it!!!everyone is friendly an it makes a great atmosphere!
every night has a diffrent promo an unlike places like berlins they dont end at stuid times like 10 when people are just coming out!
its cheap and fun...thats the point!! its not tryin 2 b something its not like"fufu" or klute
i even drink in there on my days off
hazelh - 17 Dec 2004 12:21
I too agree with the remarks made by Adam Solley.

The old Jug of Ale was a good pub with decent beers and would be a first stop on a night out, and it used to be a refreshing change from the hideous pubs like the Litten Tree.

They have turned a decent pub into a piece of crap, thus making the Litten Tree seem not quite so bad at all...!!! I hope they go bankrupt soon.
seasiderMM - 17 Dec 2004 05:48
Totally agree with the remarks made by Adam Solley. It was a good pub with decent ales but like Adam, I've taken my business elsewhere. Had the misfortune to be dragged in there last Saturday night as my wife wanted to meet some of her workmates. During our mercifully short stay, at least six people managed to drop their drinks but I never once saw any of the broken glass and spilt booze swept and mopped up. Unless you are an expert lip-reader, you will never know what the person standing six inches away from you is saying, the 'music' is that loud. Every so often, a member of staff would jump up onto the bar and pour free booze down the necks of already drunken punters. Pretty sure that it's illegal to serve alcohol to someone who is or appears to be drunk not that any of the staff were concerned with this minor detail. The toilets are upstairs and are an ordeal for any female customers wearing skirts as everyone gets an eyeful. Another poster seems to think that half yarders of turbo shandy for 2 is a great selling point. The mind boggles. Needless to say, you can't get a decent ale in here. The only good thing I can think of is that the doorstaff were polite. Overall the experience was hideous hideous hideous.
anonymous - 8 Dec 2004 11:17
Bar: [me] - I would have to name it one of the best places in Bournemouth. Where else holds a service industries night where bar/resturant/hotel staff can get the same deals as students! Half yarders of Turbo shandy for two quid! Can't go wrong! Anyone who thinks its rubbish obvisally does not know how to have fun!!
zoe_day_85 - 24 Nov 2004 23:44
I dont know what they are all on about, bar me is great. great tracks, nicely laid out, good drinks, and a stage for dancing.
steph - 30 Oct 2004 21:28
Has now become the hideous 'Bar Me' - very luminous, lots of mutton dressed as lamb and plenty of "hilarious" staff who are forced to perform rude acts with balloons etc you get the picture
djbj - 1 Sep 2004 17:47
This used to be a very good pub with a nice selection of Real Ales.
It seams this pub chain has turned it's back on British beer and is heading towards the bland and characterless wine bar style, that is every other high street pub, in fact you might as well call it Yates. I walked past the pub the other day, on the way to Wetherspoon's and it look a lot quieter!

I was a loyal customer, but sorry i've found other places to spend my money.
Adam Solley - 19 Apr 2004 11:05
As the Jug of ale this was once Bournemouths best town centre pub, then they refurbished it and frankly theyve made a pigs ear of it.the toilets are up a right dodgy set of stairs(waiting till someone falls and they get sued).
It hasnt helped that theres been a change of management Lyn and Rod were superb managers but the new one hasnt got their talent.
They should have left it how it was as now i almost always just walk right past it having previously been a pub i set out to go to
ian - 1 Mar 2004 13:52
Has now followed the trend of most Hogshead Town Centre pubs and dispensed of almost all of its real ales. My last visit was spoiled by the heavy handed and rude way that the staff 'asked' people to leave shortly after last orders had been called. Think this has been mentioned before but it's no longer called the Jug of Ale. It's just a plain old Hogshead.
John - 31 Dec 2003 13:09
Yeah apologies for the spelling. I was either drunk or had finger trouble or both. Good to hear that the toilets have been sorted.
John - 11 Jul 2003 16:16
In Bournenmouthenenenenenmouth (courtesy of [email protected]) the Hogshead owners have wonderful fresh and minty toilets in all establishments, and cost around 10p per pint on Tuesday Happy Evenings, always a good time to pick up some cheap tarts too. Great.
Bill - 11 Jul 2003 16:06
some nice women behind the bar, some not so nice too, cheapish drinks and expensive food. Overall nice place, toilets could do with a revamp though
Tim - 16 Jun 2003 16:30
Seems as if the name Jug of Ale has been officially dropped as there is now just a HOGSHEAD sign outside. No lights working in the toilet when I visited today. Very handy.
anonymous - 24 Apr 2003 19:43
Was an atmospheric pub without being claustrophobic until they totally re-vamped it a couple of years ago, making it bright and open plan and adding hideous thumping disco music in the evenings. Excellent range of ale although you pay about 10p a pint more than you do in the Hop and Kilderkin which is another Hogshead pub in Bournenmouth (Winton).
