This is a lovely looking pub/ restaurant. Unfortunately the food is pretty dire. I ordered Baby monkfish tail wrapped in pancetta on tagliatelle, with Chard..I received uncooked pasta, the tail , of the tail of the monkfish ( bit of bone with 2 small forkfuls of dry fish), Chard was limply hiding underneath the pasta and some raw on the top. ...all pretty inedible, thankfully removed from my bill. For pudding,, I ordered baked custard tart with strawberry and cream....Strawberries were ok but not seasonal, and cream is cream...tart was tasteless. Altogether a pretty rotten experience. On the plus side wine list is ok, and waiting staff were good albeit , obviously used to having complaints about the food...would have been good to have the Chef, step away from his microwave and come to the table to explain how he failed his cookery o`level and still managed to work at this pub !

Slow service, overcooked and tasteless steaks, had to chase bill and waited more than 20 mins because of till problem. Ended up offering my contact details as 3 year old grandson needed to go home to bed. I did not raise my voice or swear but manager told me he did not like my attitude. We should have sent sub standard food back but we did not want to wait even longer. Manager would not therefore reduce cost of meal so make sure you send meal back if not happy. There are many good Chef and Brewers but based on this experience, this is not one of them.

After the refurb, which looked lovely, we decided that we would give it a go. A hugh menu with some nice choices. But clearly this pubs downfall. After 1hr wait, a bottle of wine and a chat with the waiter the food turned up with it not being at local standard. Meal was unable to be finished ,so we ended up at a The Old Dog, which was both value for money and of a high culinary standard

Don't go there! Staff friendly enough but drinks and food took an age to arrive. To top it off, we all got food poisoning.

Nice pub but terrible management. Arrived 5.15 and placed order. Were served drinks and starter by duty manager at our table but over 1 hour later just before our main courses arrived he told us that we had to move because the table was reserved! We paid for drinks and starter and left. Chef and Brewer need to improve their staff training.

This is a lovely pub. It is very old and full of history. The staff are friendly and the food is good. An ideal place for a quiet drink.

Only been here a couple of times, but I really like it.Decent couple of ales on both times and I quite enjoyed the fact it was dark!Recommended for a rewarding pint after a dander in nearby Thorndon Park, and it's worth continuing on to the Old Dog on up the road to Billericay, just watch yourself on the corner when you're crossing the road!

Went Thursday lunchtime. Very busy and only two barmaids who also had to take the food orders, so there was quite a bit of waiting for both drinks and grub. But they worked efficiently and politely under the pressure.

The food and beer were fine and, amazingly for March, several people were eating at tables outside. The door got propped open from time to time for outside service, so it was quite draughty indoors.

Unfortunately, due to a change in staff and atmosphere a few months ago, the pub has gone down hill drastically. I haven't been back since, and won't be making any effort to in the future.
A great shame, but the place does miss the likes of Kaz and Kirsty behind the bar!

A good pub complete with duck pond - just a little too busy sometimes

Beer fine, but a very dark pub

Food is overpriced and portions are too small. Very dark and difficult to see what you are eating.

Nice pub. Nice duck-pond. V. relaxing in the summer. Friendly and welcoming, charming and warm. It was quite a relief to find that I could just about make it here and back for lunch after a year working in the nearby idyll that is Southfields industrial estate.

Any place situated on the Billericay Road has got to have something going for it. This pub does its location full justice. Not too busy of a weekday. Very comfortable surroundings. Simply a good place to visit if you're looking for a quiet drink in a civilised atmosphere. Who knows, you might even meet Muffin in there. He'll be the one sitting in the corner with a pink carnation button hole and a copy of The Telegraph opened at the leisure page.
