user reviews of the Beerhouse, Bury St Edmunds

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

The Beerhouse was the first of two pubs for us in Bury St Edmunds. It has a fairly modern interior and appears to be the tap room for the Brewshed Brewery, which is just opposite. From them, there was Best Bitter, American Blonde & Pale Ale. Guests were Corvedale Norman's Pride, Wolf Golden Jackal, Raw Blonde Pale Ale & Humpty Dumpty Little Sharpie. Ciders were Abrahalls Lily The Pink & Thundering Molly & Harry Taylor's Crooked Branch. A nice place. But at £4.10 a pint, it's a little pricey. There's a covered and an uncovered area outdoors at the rear.

With football over we had time for 1 more beer before the train back to Cambridge.

I’d been leaving the Beerhouse to last as it was a re-tick for me. It was rather busy at 5.30pm with rugby union internationals being shown on the large screen.

My last visit for a few years back and the pub has been refurbished since then with the addition of the Brewshed at the rear.

A fine selection of Brewshed ales on the bar, I had went for their Rioja Porter @ 4.7%. A very good and rich pint.

I just had time to literally neck my pint before heading for the station.

Next visit I’ll make more time for this place and it’s a good pub and a great place for a beer near the station.

A refurb of an old pub and while not quite pubco feel it is not an old fashioned pub. Saying that the service and ale were good - did get a duff end of barrel pint which they changed.

Second visit to this pub, previous visit was over a year ago. Was in a group of 4. Between us we tried all of the Breweshed ales and a couple of the guests. All were excellent and the service was really good.

Of the recent reviews, I'd side more with TWG than with toolster. We had good service in the scrubbed wood bar and as well as four Brewshed beers (Pale Ale, Best Bitter, Cloudy Summer and American Blonde) there were some interesting guests from Reedley Hallows, Peerless and Cambridge Moonshine. I've known the Cannon a lot longer and probably prefer it to the Brewhouse, but mainly through good memories and if trying the two for the first time, would be hard-placed to split them in quality

An overpriced parody of the far superior Dove in Bury St Edmunds, but with far higher tariff overall.
It looks all 'oldie Worldy' but is in fact 1 of several business ventures of the owner.
I wouldn't walk out of town to visit this place, but I would the Dove.
Still, better than most in BSE I guess.
Strangely soulless...................

We were up in Bury en masse primarily to visit the Old Cannon Brewery nearby. However, despite having received an informative tour of the premises, we received a very modest sample of their wares, so as a hastily-formulated Plan B we repaired to the Beerhouse, where we hoped we might get a better brew-pub experience. We didn't get into the brewery itself, but we did receive a hearty welcome from the barmaid (a girlfriend of the brewer at Cannon!), who was not only charming but increasingly tolerant of our high jinx as we bedded in all too comfortably at the bar.

She furnished us with samples (not free but at 2.85 who's complaining!) from the Brewshed - the Pale was excellent, and the Best was interesting too. There was a stout I believe too which went down well with others in our party. We even got round to discussing the merits of the various Scotches available. Otherwise, one could've been forgiven for thinking this is a Nethergate house, as all but 2 of the pumps were occupied by their offerings. Apparently there'd been something of a Nethergate fest over the recent days so it was a hangover from that - not the only hangover in town I'm sure as some of those beers can be pretty rich!

The pub was empty upon arrival early afternoon but steadily began to fill with seemingly like-minded quaffers, in single, group and couple configurations. The Beerhouse appears traditional from without but within, it is a light, airy and quite contemporary space which doesn't always suit a pub, but it did seem to gel well for this operation. If the welcome and the wares are sound, the decor matters less and less anyway.

Really, this was a very jolly experience and I'm now rather grateful that Cannon didn't offer more of themselves as it allowed us plenty of time to get acquainted with the Brewshed instead! If ever I'm up here again, this is where I'd head for immediately if in need of liquid refreshment.

Would be good to review this pub, but it would need to be open when you visit, very restricted opening hours.

Pretty close to pub and beer heaven, our first visit last weekend won't be the last. The quality of the beer and good friendly service put the misery of another home defeat at Portman Road to the back of our minds. Adnams New Zealand Pale and Salopian Icon were excellent, and my wife's Brewshed American Blonde was very good too. 5 more beers, and the board of what was on next was mouth watering as well.
A proper pub, busy with discerning customers enjoying top-notch beers.

Turned up at the Beer House in order to get the train - didn't have enough ime to do it justice as they had a beer festival on!! Range of beers was awesome, though I understand when no festival on their selection is good anyway. Everything I sampled was in excellent condition, well served by knowledgeable staff. Good thing was, there were plenty of people drinking who not participating in the festival, so I'm presuming it's a "good" pub. Will have to revisit when it hasn't got a festival on to see for myself.

Great pub this - nice welcoming interior, really good service and best of all, an excellent choice of ever-changing real ales (a refreshing change in Bury St Edmunds). Really good modern take on what is now an old-fashioned concept.

They've also recently opened their own micro-brewery, which is great news.

Just made another visit to the Beerhouse - still call Ipswich Arms on this site! - what a choice of ever changing real ales (7). Not too busy last night, but could become v popular. Have found the pub on twitter @burybeerhouse. The landlord knows his beers and as you can see from the walls - over 350 beers sered since they opened in July 2010. Also Suffolk CAMRA pub of the month, but don't this put you off ! (LOL)

Paid my first visit since the change to the Beer House. Lovely place, clean and tidy, good range of beer (and those I had were in good condition). Surprised by the beer courtyard out the back - probably quite a plesant pace to enjoy a beer on a summer afternoon. Definitely return... maybe for the BF at the end of May when they are advertising having the best 50 ales they've had over the last year (something like that anyway).

Now this is more like it. Apart from only being 3 paying customers in (including me) when I first visited this is a real beer drinkers mecca as the name would suggest it's a plain and simple and very welcoming Beerhouse. 7 beers on draught and another 6 advertised as coming next. I sampled half of the line up and they were all excellently kept. Food available which looked and smelt good. If I didn't live so far away this would undoubtedly be my local as it's excellent and is certainly in my 'top 5' pubs. Well done to the landlord and staff, the people of Bury are very lucky to have this place.

Without doubt the best new pub in town, went in on a friday night and was heaving!, serving 7 real ales and a few from the cellar. Nice atmosphere and not full of youngsters on the way to the nearby club, also a really good mix of young and old people alike, after speaking to the landlord(who was really into his beer for his age!) was informed of a micro being installed in the spring. Hope they keep it up! Good luck to them!
spoony86 - 15 Feb 2011 22:34
This pub has been re-named The Beerhouse and serves real ale a two lagers. Normally 6 - 7 ales on from throughout the UK! Well worth a visit.

I used to quite like The Ipswich Arms as a pub although the GK beer was never brilliant. However, since being converted to The Beerhouse this pub is now a must to visit when in BSE (It's very handy for the train station). I had a couple of new brewers beers (Grain/Brandon) but there was a very good selection and some interesting ales to come. The pub is a sort of mix between alehouse and contemporary - some old pews and some newish fittings - trying to appeal to all types of customers I reckon. Still, well worth a visit and a welcome addition to the town's drinking venues. I just hope they can keep up the beer standards and attract locals down to this part of town. I understand they are planning to brew on site in the future.

Cracking, good landlord, god beer, good atmosphere, really good all round

Called in and found a pleasant airy estabishment. The smell of new paint was prevalent as it's only been open a few days. There were 6 real ales plus Thatchers cider on draught. The lagers on tap were Becks Vier, Leffe and Staropramen, They also had bottled Peroni and Corona. I started with a TT Landlord, then a very nice Oakham Inferno followed by a Hop Back Summer Lightening. This pub is in a great location and should provide a welcome addition for real ale drinkers in the town.

The new Beer House looks like an offshoot of the One Bull, as the same team is behind it. This means clean lines, lots of pale wood surroundings and a good choice of refreshment; the pub, at present, does no food (apart from peanuts), although this is promised. The wine list is very well chosen and, for the most part, reasonably priced.

Oakham and Adnams ales predominate for now, along with TT Landlord, with a reasonable, but not large range of bottled beers. There are also two ciders on tap. My pint of Landlord was too cold and almost fizzy, so lacked taste to begin with.

The outside lounge is large, easily big enough for private parties, but open to the street. The wooden table/chair combos, both there and inside, seem aimed at younger drinkers, as they are badly designed and a little uncomfortable.

This is now called The Beer House - has links to The One Bull. This is going to be real ale lead with 8 real ale pumps on the bar stocking Adams, Thatchers Cask Cider, JHB, plus others - constantly changing to offer variety. Also has Leffe, Becks Vier, Staropramen, Aspal Cider and Murphys on. Opens this Saturday at 7pm. If you like your real ale plus quality continental lager then visit this place. Lovely outside seating area - offers something different from the norm.

i just heard that the ipswich arms is coming back with a new name 'the beer house' going to be an ale house brewing their own beer and having like 6 guest ales on at a time may prove quite intersting, a breath of freash air in bury i think.

Freehold now up for sale, potential for other use...

On a constantly busy roundabout, just down the hill from 'Brazilia' (sic), what chance does this place have? It's never going to be a CAMRA contender, is it?
Regis - 30 Jul 2009 20:23
Now been taken over as 'Bar Curvo'.........oh,for Christs sake!!I had to laugh.
There was me thinking I was in a rural Market Town in Suffolk....turns out I'm on millionaires-strip in Miami!
Astounding naffness, but oh-so normal around here now when it comes to pub refurbs these days.Shit.
toolster - 3 Jul 2009 18:19
Passed this pub today and would love to know by what mental process someone could decide that a pub which for many years has been called the Ipswich Arms would be improved by being renamed The Gaff, have all its original pub signs replaced with shitty black and white cartoony ones and replace the real ale with 'cocktails and shooters'. Presumably some cretin or other invested thousands of pounds vandalising the pub in this way.
edchambers - 18 Feb 2009 21:52
Now a trendy 'yoof Bar' called the Gaff,on its second Landlord.
Its struggling,with very few punters.
Why oh why do people always aspire to the same old vibe when they take over a pub?.....Habitat furniture, pretentious bottled lager etc and not much else.
There are all these things at many other bars in the town centre.
if you're on your way to the nearby Brazilias nightclub then this may serve as a warm-up beer....otherwise,stay in the town centre.
toolster - 16 Dec 2008 14:42
Closed. Admiral Taverns advertising the lease.

This was formerly a Greene King pub, as mentioned in a previous review it is now called The Gaff. If you like real ale then don't go here. When I called in there were six lagers and a draught Guinness pump on the bar. Of the six lagers only three were being served that evening. The decor was modern with sofas and tables. There was also a DJ's desk with turntables. I would say this place would be OK if you are under 25 and going onto one of the nearby nightclubs. If not then I wouldn't go in here.
Fakenham - 12 Jul 2008 19:08
This pub has closed down and replaced by a modern-looking place called "The Gaff" - haven't been in there so can't comment on whether any good or not...
