user reviews of the Three Horseshoes, Thursley

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Visited on a Thursday at 6:30 pm. reasonably busy, but not very welcoming. Appears to be a bit of a "locals" pub and made us feel uncomfortable as we are not from the village. We asked if we needed to book a table as ALL were in the process of being laid. Advised no food until 7pm. Barman felt it necessary to take the piss out of my partners preference for lime and soda (she was driving that day!) so decided to take our food order elsewhere. Frensham Soul...however was excellent

We've been coming here periodically for more than 30 years. I read the previous comments so wasn't surprised, it being a Sunday, at the devotion to feeding the masses that had descended. We therefore went prepared to just have a beer and were made very welcome perched at the bar. The home badged beer is in fact designed by them with Frensham Brewery so we were very happy to sample this brewery for the first time. Very good it was as well. We stuck to it as the other beers on offer, Hogs Back TEA and Tribute from St Austell didn't fit our taste as much. The barman said he had taken one from Tillingbourne off as it was a bit samey as the Frensham but in my opinion it would nicer to see one of theirs on the bar as they produce many different styles. St Austell is big brewery with many tied houses in Cornwall so it seems a shame to truck it all the way up here when there are so many superb local breweries that could do with our support. If intending to eat at weekend, book.

I am bemused by the comments of "ramblethenlunch" of 14th September last.
One of the attractions of The Three Horseshoes is that it remains a proper pub, rather than a gastropub, where the staff look down on those who have just popped in for a drink.
My family and I had lunch in the bar on New Years Day and it was excellent. The pub was understandaby packed, but there was no problem with service or the size of portions. The Doom Bar was first class.
We found the prices perfectly reasonable and very competitive for a Surrey pub-particularly as this pub was the Surrey dining Pub of the Year in the 2012 Good Pub Guide..
Unfortunately,we live 30 miles away-if we were nearer we would be regulars.

On a long circular walk from Hindhead via Gibbet Hill and the Devil's Punch Bowl we lunched at the Three Horseshoes.

First of all it's not that easy to find. There's no pub sign, so you have to look for the car park and the name painted over the door.

The pub is divided into two - the pub is at the front and the restaurant at the back. The pub bit was quite busy on the Thursday lunch time we visited, but the restaurant was empty. TEA and Doom Bar available - looking at the previous reviews this appears to be an unchanging range - more Cornish beer lugged all the way up to Surrey - why not something more local. We all had TEA which was excellent - no problems there.

The menu for pub diners is small - half a dozen starters, a dozen mains and some designer sandwiches. It's pretty pricey for a pub though - two of the main courses were over 20, which is a lot for a pub lunch. Two of us plumped for omelette and chips, whilst I had ham, egg and chips. Both of these retailed at 9.50. Whilst the food was fine, the portion size could best be described as meagre. I've had bigger starters than this main course.

It's a shame that this very pleasantly situated village pub has morphed into a restaurant. Villages need pubs. Do food by all means - I understand that any pub needs to these days to survive. And have a restaurant attached - pricey if you like - again no problem. But don't combine the two - it doesn't work.

A good pub spoiled by a bit of pretentiousness.

This is a lovely place with a particular idyllic garden for a Summer's day. The beer is generally ok but I thought the food was mediocre and a touch over-priced. Placing an order for food was a real hassle but after that the service was pretty good.

Shame about the fake review (gfisher51).

Country pub in picturesque village just off the A3, although you ought to walk here from Hindhead, Haslemere or Godalming to appreciate the pub's location. The beer choice isn't expansive but they treat it well enough (TEA and Doombar). Possibly a bit too foody on Sundays (we drinkers were glued to the bar) but in this day and age, pubs have to make their money somehow - and rural Surrey is prime money-making territory. Psst - please can we have a guest micro ale now and again, ta.

Went for a long walk in the snow around the Devil's Punchbowl from Thursley on Saturday and stopped off at this pub on our return for a welcome beer and some sustenance. Unfortunately we got there at about 2.30 after the kitchen had closed, so missed the food, although a dessert order was taken on the table next to us in the bar area 10 mins after we'd arrived, so perhaps a sandwich could have been accomodated. Either way, I had a pint of perfect TEA followed by a similarly perfect pint of Shere Drop by the wood fire, which made up for any food shortages on my side. Mrs Smudge and junior had a bag of crisps each. I think it's got a Surrey Dining pub of the year accreditation now, so I assume the food is good but will have to wait and see. Menu looked pretty good. I also assume the place will become pretty busy on the back of the above, but I'll give it another try at some point!

I organised a walk for my friends and set this pub as the lunch stop. I had never been there before and was frankly, a bit concerned once I had read the reviews on beerintheevening and seeing the posh menu for lunch when I knew all we'd want was a pint and a sandwich.
However, I rang them up and they were very helpful and not at all fazed by someone wanting to reserve a table for 15-20 people, an equally vague estimated time of arrival, and a hint that we didn't want to spend much money on a busy saturday lunch time! We all tramped in with muddy boots (sorry), and enjoyed very nice food (the salt beef and gherkin sandwiches are delicious! And the sausages and mash were also very well received) that was well priced and served promptly.
An excellent time was had by all, thank you very much!!

After reading some of the comments regarding the Three Horseshoes. I felt I just had to add my comments.

Our daughter's wedding reception was held there last summer. I must say that all of the staff especially David & Sandra were brilliant they could not have been more helpful. The food was excellent with our guests some of whom work in the catering industry commenting that not only was the service great but so was the food.
gfisher51 - 5 Jan 2012 13:50
We booked in for lunch today (Sunday). We were placed at a tiny corner table in the bar area and not in the dining area, although in all fairness we had been told we would be sitting in the bar area. The food took 40 minutes to arrive, with no apology or without any member of staff communicating with us at all during this period - in other words, we were ignored completely. Two of us ordered duck confit. We had to send both plates back after the first mouthful because the accompanying potatoes were raw (dauphinoise). When the meals were returned and the duck was tasted, it most certainly was not "confit". It was dry to the bone and tasteless. The experience was so negative at this stage that we quietly complained to the manageress. She assured us that the duck was "confit", but we suggested that we call it quits and that we just paid for the two starters, which were okay, and the drinks. She accepted this. All in all the experience was very disappointing especially as one of the chefs worked at Chez Bruce, an old favourite restaurant of ours.
ExChef - 23 Oct 2011 15:22
I visited the pub today and my experience was mixed. The first impression was not good, as I followed a group in, only to have the door slammed in my face my the last person, who judging by her facial expression, clearly thought motorcyclists should not be allowed over the threshold! I had to wait a few minutes to be served, but this was because the barman was taking a lot of trouble to explain the beers available to another customer, providing samples. The Shere Drop I had was in good condition, but hardly justified the price: 3.40 a pint. The pub was very busy so eating was not practical.
bitterntwisted - 8 Oct 2011 19:57
Lovely location, had high hopes, but really slow service, food took forever, no-one checked to see if the meal was OK, and at the end we had to go and find someone to ask for the bill. Food quality was average to poor, despite high prices. We complained about 2 dishes which had clearly been left and they handled the complaint badly. They were confrontational and reluctant to acknowledge our complaint at all. Eventually they did take money off the bill but it took some discussion, and there was no sign of any apology.

We would not go there again.
jerrypett - 3 Aug 2011 23:21
This is an excellent pub.We had lunch there yesterday and it was superb-certainly no evidence of Brake Bros or microwaves.
It really is a proper pub with three hand pulled beers, friendly and attentive proprietors and staff-well worth a visit.
I am at a loss to understand some of the earlier uncomplimentary posts,if indeed, they are genuine.
Unfortunately,I live some distance away, otherwise it would certainly be my local.
huntforbeer - 14 Feb 2011 11:48
awfull food had to wait for one hour to then get the wrong food strange how the replacement only took 10 muinets (in the microwave) potatoes like building bricks so if you like over priced food served in a long time then go ahead go here

zenawatson - 12 Dec 2010 20:35
Mmmmmmm it must have changed hands looking at the one hit comments below.
Not saying things don`t change but the last the food was very poor even Brakes would have disowned it.

Over the last month I've had a FANTASTIC 'proper' dinner here - pork belly, more delicious than I can describe! - and a pizza - huge and fabulous chilli hot salami plus extra wild mushrooms. Yes, they've only got one pizza oven, but the pizzas come out every minute or two, so you don't have to wait long. Great barman, lovely waitress, great beer (TEA). Very traditional pub interior - no juke box, slot machines etc, quiet and cosy. I loved it.
lindamay - 16 Sep 2010 12:40
We had a great meal last Thursday night - all the food was cooked fresh on the premises so it wasn't fast food! If you want proper, real food not just reheated Brakes Brothers concoctions, this is the best place to go in the area. The staff were friendly and all spoke english! - increasingly rare these days!
DavidBee - 24 Aug 2010 16:36
A groups of ten came here for our pre Christmas meal. We came on the recommendation of a friend and were not disappointed. Excellent food and very reasonably priced, though only one choice per course for vegetarians. However the quality and presentation were both very good as was the service. It was a shame I was driving as the Surrey Hills Shere Drop bitter was very tasty.
ChrisL - 21 Dec 2009 15:25
Worst food I have ever been charged for. Went back a second time as my wife and I were just passing and needed a drink as we had been riding a while. Because we were on a motorbike we were told they were closed, Even though it was 1.30 on a saturday and the pub was packed ! ! The staff even came to the door to make sure we left. Don't even think of stoping off if you are on a bike. They might stone you on the green. Someone should tell them this is not the fifty's.
THECRAWLER - 21 Jul 2009 00:00
Amazing cuisine, very welcoming and friendly staff with a prompt service.
Very entertaining dog too.
10/10 everytime.

Do not be fooled into going to this pub for its 'Monday Pizza Evening.' This sounds novel and at over a tenner a pop you might think you were about to be treated to some quality fare. However, they actually only have one pizza oven so unless only one person wants it then you will be eating at different times and your pizza is likely to be undercooked. My girlfriend and I waited for over an hour for our soggy pizzas, during which time another couple left without eating and the party of eight who had waited even longer complained loudly at the ridiculous idea that you would have a 'pizza evening' with capacity for only one pizza at a time. I had to agree. The food wasn't great and the service was no better. One to avoid.

We have been going to this pub for a while for quiet evenings out.

The barmaid is friendly and the beers are nice, even if they don't change much, but . . . .

. . . . If you want to be glared at by the bloke who works in the restaurant all night its the place to be. He has put us off with his rude manner and obtrusive presence. Wierd, but we've now stopped going there as he makes us feel so uncomfortable!

slugbreff - 10 Oct 2008 14:38
popped in here whilst on a cycling tour last Saturday arvo.Idyllic setting, courteous staff, superb Westons cider (and one other I can't remember),well thought out selection of fine ales.Place was a little quiet due to an important point-to-point nearby ...nice vibe though
wolseley - 12 May 2008 13:36
I wish we had called in on the same day as Knighty711 because we had a far different experience to them.
We did only have a main course and desert but came out still starving, the food was very poor value for money and the service very slow.
One of the comments says that everything is made from scratch! well i bet Baldrick could have done a better job making a more tasteful meal from scratch.
ThePilgrim - 7 Feb 2008 18:33
I went to this pub a few weeks ago now and thought that the service was excellent and the food superb, my husband and I had the scallops to start that were delicious and very filling and then had the steak to follow, which was spilling over the plate, we were so full, we couldnt manage a dessert!

We would recommend this pub to all!

I would definitely return - 10/10!

knighty711 - 23 Nov 2007 12:27
We went here on a Friday night after work, since the food had been recommended. It was a quiet little pub in a lovely ancient building, with a friendly barmaid minding the shop. They had a couple of obscure ales.

Unfortunately food was only served from 7:30pm, which I thought was rather daft, so we left.

StrawberryFrog - 1 Sep 2007 17:14
This pub is quite superb. The staff are friendly and efficient. The food is excellent, adventurous and innovative. I agree that the prices are quite high, but considering that everything is made from scratch on the premises, by three talented chefs, from the highest quality ingredients, you can reasonably expect the prices to be slightly higher than pubs who buy-in from Brakes and the like. The real ales are always good (kept excellently by John) with Hogs Back TEA as standard plus two regularly changing guest ales. At present the guest ales are Langhams Hip Hop and Sundowner.

Best Barman: John

Best Waitress: Millie

Best All-rounder: Shelly-welly

We thank you for that comment gary fisher (the managment i think)but if this is the best (which by the way its not by a long shot)i would hate to see the worst.
anonymous - 18 Jun 2007 15:08
I went with my family on Sunday 10th june the food was tremendous which was matched by the service. This has to be one of the best pub/restaurant in Surrey. It was also very good value for money.
gary.fisher - 13 Jun 2007 16:10
I went for a drive in the country and came across this place.Well i wish i had read the comments from Beersupper before i stopped for a bite to eat.I can only agree the portion of food i got was minute and certainly not worth what was charged.Lager was average.
Once bitten twice shy.
Dont stop here if you are hungry,do if your on a diet.
anonymous - 22 Mar 2007 20:41
The Food Served in this Pub is by far the highest in the local area,
wordbox - 19 Mar 2007 12:45
Service not friendly, drinks ok but very smokey in the bar area.Restaurant area well it will be a victim of its small portions and over the top price`s,service was awful waited 45mins and the place was empty.
Not again thank you.
stroller - 16 Mar 2007 19:21
Sorry but i must have got the wrong pub going by the two comments below.
We found this place far from excellent it was very poor in fact. The food portions were as ajo said very very small.
I had the shepherds pie well were do i start it looked and tasted like Smash potato,i had to get my magnifying glass out to see the meat it was no more than 3/4inch thick and cost 9.00.(if i had got this from a supermarket frozen and paid more than 45p i would have been robbed).EAT ELSEWHERE
Beersupper - 15 Mar 2007 18:23
The centre of community life, except that they won't allow the Cricket Club to change there, because of the mud they might bring in! Very busy, risks being a victimof its own success. Very small bar area, but large and very pleasant garden, and pleasant service, if not always very speedy, probably because of the number of visitors. Great in summer when you have time to spare, and can sit outside, and enjoy the food, which is adventurous and very successful. The beers are varied - we have never been disappointed by either choice or quality, though not particularly cheap!
kneipejaeger - 9 Feb 2007 17:15
One of the friendliest pubs around. The restuarant is more restuarant than pub, with waitress service. The bar area is quite small so can't take an influx of large groups, like walkers, however, there is a huge garden for the summer months. Food is not typical for a pub, especially at lunch times but is excellent. Beer is kept well and there are guest beers. Bar staff make you very welcome.
traveller11 - 14 Jan 2007 08:50
Went today. Service was incredibly slow and when the food finally came the portions were very small. We had lamb, which was tiny on a pile of mashed potatoes with a very few peas in a sort of cream and chive[?] sauce. My husband had the veal, which was mainly bone. I think it was very poor value for money in comparison with other pubs. The waitress asked us if we were happy and when we told her not really, she didn't know what to do. [Poor staff training]
We then waited ages for the desserts, which were a better size, but still pricy compared with other places. We were asked if we wanted the coffee after the desserts, but we said at the same time in view of the long waits. However they still arrived afterwards. They weren't really busy as there were a lot of empty tables, so I don't know how they cope when they are full.
I wouldn't say it was a total disaster and what there was of the food was nice. If they had made an effort to have vegetables as well it wouldn't have looked so bad. Anyway there are better pubs in the area, so we won't go back again.
ajo - 2 Aug 2006 21:11
Excellent friendly pub, good food, good beer and lager, nice girls behind the bar and in the restuarant!
Good mix for all ages, lively and not at all cliquey - the natives are friendly too!

Landlord is an excellent cook, otherlandlords apparantly go to the three horseshoes to eat!
locallocal - 12 Jul 2006 13:55
Great food, even if a little pricy! A very good pint of Triple f "Dazed & Confused". Other beers on offer were, Fullers "London Pride" and Hogs Back "T.E.A.".
Sunday lunchtime was crowded, and the noise level became unbearable, so we had our sweets and coffees in the garden. Some of the markups on the wine list, made one of our party, who recently retired from working for a wine merchant, wince.
jbsjazzer - 10 May 2006 11:22
I went there last night for a drink with friends. London Pride was in great condition and pub busy, although they need to fill pints up to the top. Atmosphere good. Can't comment on the food.
stickinsect - 17 Mar 2006 09:51
Apparently this pub was closed for a while, and I admire what the landlord has done in making it viable again. I would have liked to come here with a group of walkers, as it is well located on the Greensand Way. However, on a Sunday, the beer was indifferent, and a plate of boiled pasta with a standard sauce, no salad, and no bread, cost me 11. That was the cheapest thing on the menu. Lots of families were there, and maybe that is the market they aim for (but I noticed a lot of food left over "because the portions were too big"-??). I can't bring my walking friends here. Neither a good restaurant nor a good pub.
