user reviews of the Rowbarge Hotel, St Johns

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Dont be fooled by that traditional rustic exterior, inside is a traditionalists nightmare, all bare boards and minimalist art. Wheres the comfortable chairs and log fires? Sorry but not my cup of tea but I cannot fault the bar staff. Barmaid changed my pint without any prompting from me! Thanks babe but it goodbye from me

Fuzzyduck, what are " repairations" ???? You really shouldn't play truant, now back to school and try listening you A grade moron.

I visited The Rowbarge yesterday evening for the first time since it opened it's doors again following the recent repairations. For all intents and purposes it looks much the same as it ever did both inside and out. Close inspection however will confirm otherwise. Much has changed following the fire but the footprint and overall layout remains roughly the same.
Spitfire and London Pride were still there, a pint of the latter costing me 3.40. A few familiar local faces were evident too and as I left at about 8.00pm the place was starting to come alive. Not sure if a telly is in situ (never used to be) so perhaps the place was filling up with people who didn't want to witness the greatest football team in the history of the universe beat Napoli !!
The car park is still a complete dog's breakfast though ! First impressions score it seven .

Went past this morning, 7/09/2011. Large sign stating it will reopen in October.

Drove past yesterday, still looks like a building site - Hope it opens soon

Badly damaged in a recent fire, hopefully will reopen.

Severe fire. Alas tonight (5 p.m., 22 Jan 2011) the St.Johns Road road was cordoned off by police. Fire engines and lines of hose were in abundance across the road. A fire which looks to have started in the kitchen has severely damaged the roof where a great hole has appeared at the front (right side as you see the photo above), and worse at the rear (kitchen). It will be a while before this pub re-opens. My fear is that if this is owned by a notorious PubCo, they'll take advantage and now sell the land off for yet more flats. Let's hope another community hub isn't wiped out!!

Good food rather overpriced but the staff are friendly and the atmosphere is pleasant

I'm an occasional, but not frequent visitor to the Rowbarge. However, I never have any complaints.

The beer is well kept - not a huge selection, but always London Pride and one top quality beer, a Spitfire/Bombadier/Adnams-type. And always cold Newcastle Brown for those hot Summer days.

You can usually get a seat, certainly in the Summer as there's a sizeable beer garden, with the recent addition of a covered area for the smokers.

The food is very good, and freshly cooked. Sunday roasts are a feature, as are BBQ's when the sun's out on a bank holiday.

It is a little on the pricey side, but not excessively so - the beer isn't cheap, and a burger and chips cost about 8.50 last weekend and it was something similar for a bowl of pasta, and you're hard pressed to find anything other than sandwiches for less than a fiver. That said, the food is excellent. And unlike the town centre pubs, it isn't full of kids getting drunk on cheap lager, and I'm happy to pay a bit extra for that.

The staff are generally friendly and unobtrusive, although the bar is small and on busy Summer days when the beer garden is packed you might need to queue up for little bit.

If you like a good country pub where you can get good food and have a conversation with your mates, this is a great place.

Having seen the negative comments posted about my local, I felt I had to redress the balance. Yes the beers are a bit pricier than other pubs in the area but they are very well kept and I've never had a bad pint in there. What is more, the pub is extremely well run - the service staff are attentive, quick, friendly and efficient.

I've eaten there too and I have to say that the food is also very good indeed, in generous portions and not too expensive. What's more the pub has a large garden with a really good play area for kids. I have a five year old son and in the summer on Sundays they have a bouncy castle which is excellent. So anyway, this pub is also very good for families too.

The Rowbarge did have a makeover a couple of years ago but it was sympathetic, generally improving the environment whilst maintaining the best features (although I agree it is a shame they got rid of the pool table). Overall this boozer has a good convivial atmosphere (especially on Friday and Saturday nights) and I, for one, would not hesitate to recommend it if you're passing through St. Johns or fancy getting out of Woking.

Oh yeah, and after a couple of beers, why not make a short walk down the road to the Vojon curry house (also in St. Johns), host to Wokings Curry Chef of the Year (for about the third year running!) ;-)

Nice Sunday lunch, Friendly Staff and reasonably priced. Nice sort of customer although would be nice if they could ban children from the restaurant as they tend to spoil a relaxing Sunday. A shame that the parking isnt better but not far from the lye car park.

One of the worse pubs in woking, and that's saying something if youv'e ever visited the town centre! London prices, slow staff that would rather chat to customers than actually serve drinks to waiting ones, bad table layout, your either too hot or too cold, bad parking facilities...

But on the plus side...

Nope there isn't one well they have a beer garden to put the kids in.

But i think my main issue is the price of everything!
badpubguru - 11 May 2007 17:33
Food is good, but you have to be earning top money to eat and drink here as it is very expensive

Well it would seem that the people who left bad reviews on this place are full of it. Probably under age or just plain chavs.

I have been frequenting this place for a couple of months. Probably 4 times a month, and i have to say it is refreshing to see a pub that does not cook boil in the bag or microwaved food. All is cooked fresh.

If your a fan of lamb, then i would suggest you try "Rack on Black"

The staff are lovely, and one in particular is easy on the eyes.

I was suprised to see any bad feedback as i have never had any issues. Perhaps if someone will judge a pub on food, they should try something other than a toasted sandwich.

This pub is rubbish the only fools who venture into this rip off boring pub are beanpole and onion. Very expensive drinks and no atmosphere whatsever this pub used to be good when it had a dart board, pool table and a fruitmachine!
AdamHolland - 29 Sep 2006 19:43
Poor quality food at a very high price. Expensive drinks as well. They know they are the only pub in St Johns and abuse that fact.

Pub is too smokey, grumpy staff and decor that should have been skipped decades ago.

A friend asked for a ham and cheese toasted sandwich, but apparently they can only either a toasted cheese sandwich, or a toasted ham sandwich! So it sounds like the kitchen is on par with the other staff.

Personally I will never go back to this pub!

A nice village pub, good in the summer or the winter
NormanSpoonBender - 17 Aug 2006 11:44
Good pub for eating now, restaurant has a good menu, not cheap but not ridiculous. London Pride was well kept & wine list OK if pricey for a pub. Outside area looks like a great summer spot for a pint.
malgrey - 24 Apr 2006 13:03
Note - visited again this week and the place has had a small refurb. The decor is now a much gentler cream colour and the place looks a lot fresher.

The Rowbarge changed hands last year, thanks goodness! The pub is now much more friendly and welcoming, the food is excellent with a large menu to choose from (there are two new chefs) although some dishes can still be a little pricey, and there are friendly faces behind the bar again. Beer and wine still on the pricey side, but the pub is now definitely worth visiting again.

nice pub, little pricey. nice accomodation. claiming there a bar/restaurant is a little strong when there serving frozen food. but ok really.
jay_hard - 30 Aug 2005 21:27
Not a bad pub - although I haven't been for over a year. Nice garden with children's play area that is actually quite good.

But 2.70 for a pint of London Pride!! It's not that smart.
GrahamA - 24 Aug 2005 12:32
very nice bar - shame about the hard-faced older woman behing the bar - she could have done with smiling a bit!!! otherwise a great bar to have a drink.
