user reviews of the Cask, Pimlico

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Busy pub, even at 4:30pm on a weekday. Not too pricey if you stick with the 4% and under.

This is the Cask Pub & Kitchen so reviews should be put on that page.
For some reason BITE has not shut this page down.

My first visit to this cracking pub / bar.

10 cask ales on the hand pumps, a good selection with prices varying according to ABV. Also a large range of bottles, some as expensive as £23.00 a bottle!

Busy on a Saturday afternoon with an older crowd, with most drinking the ales on offer

Bright and airy inside, a few tables and chairs outside for the smokers.

Me and the wife had a couple of drinks here, both of the ales I had were very good and perfectly served.

However I was slightly put off by the over powering smell of urine in the gent's toilet...nice tiling on the walls though.

Very much worth a visit if you like your ales, regular meet the brewer sessions are held as well.

It's like a mini beer festival on every visit. If you want to taste something before commiting to a pint, that's fine. No sports screens either. Bonus!

You get what you pay for & quality ain't never gonna come cheap. I'm going back to do the wide cask menu. Good imaginative range. Chapel Down's Curious was in fine hoppy fettle and selling fast, with Duke IPA from the Orkneys to follow - smooth, well-rounded and strong. The estate pub environment remains but the quality of the ales pulls in a well-heeled after-work crowd of drinkers
Wiccaman777 - 15 Jun 2013 08:06
First, the owners should be congratulated for turning what seems to have been a fairly standard estate pub into a veritable craft beer extravaganza.

It's not the most comfortable of pubs - shabby chic is well and truly the order of the day but the staff are friendly, the beer is fine, they have some rare breeds and prices are okay - for cask at any rate. Their bottle and food menus are eye-wateringly expensive, although the former is excusable because of the wide variety on offer and the cost of stocking them. I don't think I'd ever become a regular, but as a change from the usual type of pubs on offer in residential London it's worth the occasional visit.

Decent pub with a well-selected range of ales including the more unusual such as stouts and porters as well as a choice of cider. Perhaps a little pricy, but £3.80 for a very nice pint of 5.0 abv porter seems reasonable to me given the location. Knowledgeable staff as well, and everyone seemed to be enjoying their visit.

There are no pubs I know with a wider choice of beer and until recently no reasons to criticise the Cask. However, I had a disappointing evening at this pub recently for two reasons. Firstly, it clearly stated on the menu that the kitchen was open until 10pm but when a friend went to order us some food at 9.45 they said they were not taking any more orders. Then something similar happened at the end of the evening. They rang the bell and I went straight to the bar to get two more drinks only to be told that that was it. I always thought that the bell was rung to signify last orders. Admittedly not being able to get a last drink is a small gripe but one of the reasons I chose this pub on this occasion was so I could have a meal there too and having had a couple of pints I was in the need of food.

The sheer variety of beer means I will go back to this pub again but overall it has gone down slightly in estimation.

It's not got a pool table , beers are excellent, food is good, evenings do get busy on Thursday and Friday with the after work crowd, but any decent pub in the area is the same. Constantly changing offerings on the pumps, nothing is ever run of the mill, so expect to pay a bit more.

Correct pub ID is 41995. This entry (1756) relates to the old Pimlico Tram which should have been marked up as a closed venue two years ago. In respect of TMJ's posting; pub ID 38871 was removed for "cleansing" following a spate of tit-for-tat reviews and up-and-down ratings which thankfully have ceased. However the "stub" remains hence the confusion. It would be helpful if both 1756 and 38871 were marked up as closed, or redirect users to the correct page. The photo issue has been "sorted" or soon will be.

Good range of beers and attentive bar staff, but I am concerned that they are taking liberties with some of their prices. An American bottled beer I had there was double the price that it cost me in another bar recently. Paying a bit more for a quality product is fine, but there should be a limit.
daveinbrum - 1 May 2011 14:43
Now known as The Cask and an excellent if expensive gastro pub. Large selection of Belgian ales and UK beers ( usually at least 6 on).
WaitorseBoyz - 12 Oct 2010 09:05
Come on! This pub is history! Gone! Now the Cask & kitchen; remove it please?
WOTCHACOCK - 20 Feb 2010 19:03
Indeed now trading as Cask. 4 real ales (Morland original, Olde Trip, Bomber County and Hop Head). Tried 3, all in good nick. Friendly landlord. Decor is stripped wood, subdued lighting. Menu looks interesting without being to gastro-pubby. Altogether a nice place to be.
malthus - 9 Jul 2009 23:35
Now seems to be opening as something called Cask which promises foreign beers (good ones).
rainlight - 22 Jun 2009 21:05
Not nearly as bad as some of the earlier reviews make out. Maybe I was lucky. The pub cat seemed fairly relaxed too.
pubinspector - 30 Dec 2008 16:58
Cannot really embellish on the last couple of posts, this pub will be shut down shortly, it is the last calling station for all the customers that the other pubs in the area dont want... very very dangerous and nasty
ChrisBoyd67 - 7 Jul 2008 14:02
This pub was always delightfully seedy but now has veered to the downright dangerous. Popped in for a swift half the other day and was horrified to see that Crack was openly being sold by some of the chavs from the local estate. Only a matter of time before the police shut this pub down.
badwolf - 6 Apr 2008 14:40
popped in here one afternoon...noticed the clientelle....looked like the dayroom of rampton hospital....used to go in quite regularly and it was always a bit rough but now....what is going on!!!!...by the way got to the bar...crazy in front smelled like he had not washed ever...turned straight around and hot..rip
icedragon72 - 29 Mar 2008 14:00
The night I stopped off for a quiet drink there were about six other people in this pub, including four 20-somethings who spent most of the time chasing each other around the pub. One took umbrage at something another said, smashed his glass and left. The others, meanwhile, including the man I considered to be the landlord, went outside to have a play fight and a fag. Don't know why, when the barmaid considered herself totally justified to light up inside the pub.

A blot on the landscape that should be razed to the ground. Given its clientele, it probably will be very shortly.

Oh, and there was no soap in the lavs.
drinklessinpimlico - 8 Sep 2007 22:38
been in once, since it has changed...its a bit poncy now..3 for a strongbow is a bt steep, prefered it when all the alchies were in there....by the way think most of old clientel migh go to coach and horses now...good pub for them
icedragon72 - 3 May 2007 16:05
Been a few years since I've been in but have fond memories. Honest
atsoutar - 20 Apr 2007 14:01
A week on, and a return visit confirmed my initial views.
The Landlord, Paul, is that rare breed; attentive, courteous and interested in his customers (and his beers!)
The food is honest fare too; only 5.95 for a large portion of fish, chips and peas, piping hot and very tasty.
This place deserves to succeed!
jcraf - 13 Apr 2007 20:04
Never gave it a second glance because it looked so dire.
However, what a pleasant surprise when I popped for a mid-afternoon jar the other day en route to Pimlico tube. Would agree with all the other comments, and the landlord is indeed a real gent and a runs a super little pub.
I'll be going back soon!
jcraf - 7 Apr 2007 13:43
Revelation - how could a pub change so much for the better is beyond belief.

The decor is lovely and the Irish guy who runs i t is very friendly, lovely place
Dangerfield105 - 2 Jan 2007 11:43
The pub is very friendly with staff that are very nice and polite especially the Irish landlord. Relaxd with good IPA.
anonymous - 2 Jan 2007 11:22
Had a great night there when they have a quiz.A good lively crowd, good wine chice and comfy recent refurb There is a new guvnor there now who looks like he knows what he's doing so definatly worth a return visit or two.
maith_a_cailin - 18 Dec 2006 16:03
Total turnaround! This place is absolutely great. The manager is such a friendly guy and we had really good pies.
anonymous - 18 Dec 2006 14:24
Boy has this place changed! A couple of Irish guys have totally transformed this place from the moost unwelcoming boozer in SW1 to a really pleasant place to come. New layout, lovely comfy couches, jazzy music, great quiz on Mondays - good luck to ye lads!!
HoHoHo - 12 Dec 2006 15:01
Now this place is a shit hole. One bar and one kind of customer - scruff. Don't visit here unless your on the dole or very, very lonely.
Hickey - 4 Oct 2006 18:36
Without doubt the worst pub ever it really is the pits, full of 70 year old scottish drunks, could use a good clean or maybe a couple of hand grenades would improve the place. shite!
Precrime - 13 Apr 2006 14:05
This used to be a great pub. It's changed hands since I was last in the area and things have changed for the worse. Cleanliness is obviously low on the agenda and I can't begin to understand how the place hasn't been shut down by the local sanitation department. The bar now has something of a Scottish flavour and Sassenachs's appear to be unwelcome. Shame as this used to be a good pub.
anonymous - 26 Mar 2006 00:48
Complete refurbishment been done, charity events, last week it was transformed into a beach party with a pool, sand and sangria, great atmosphere for all ages. If you are a whisky fan then you wont be dissapointed with the variety of choices. Great drink, great people, great pub.
Jodie_B - 22 Aug 2005 22:35
I think it has been taken over by a jocko, have a happy hour between 5-7 each night......good but often run out of beer ........bad.
You are able to tell its happy hour as all the local alchies and low life come in.
No sky sports but do show main tv sport.
I like this pub because you cant beat people watching in strange pubs, also never any problem in there, although I did have a nutty old man keep talking to me even when i had back to him and watching football.
check it out its good for a couple of pints.
icedragon72 - 14 Mar 2005 19:22
Oi! Did you spill my pint? Are you looking at my pittbull??

Actually this is quite a nice place, and its refreshing to be somewhere not mobbed by boring office workers speaking too loudly about their mundane lives (cf. The White Swan, The Morpeth Arms in Pimlico). They have a disco on Saturday nights where it's pretty easy to pull ...
anonymous - 25 Jan 2005 14:24
Because of its location it is undoubtedly a local, but this was not a problem in the least when my mates and I visited. Very good Greene King IPA at very good prices during happy hour. Menu was standard pub fare but excellent value for money given the portion sizes.

This is a good, honest unpretentious pub that I would highly recommend to those seeking a place to enjoy a quiet pint or two. Or three or four or five or

MarcDickson - 8 Dec 2004 09:34

Actually a decent boozer, altough seriously lacking in clientele !
Food portions are MASSIVE, and great value. Pool table and vast range of beers. Didnt smell of wee wehn i was there, but there was a leak in the roof !
Rivers - 15 Jan 2004 13:08
This pub has now gone seriously downhill. It smelt of wee at lunchtime today. Full of old blokes spending their pensions. However, it is cheap.
Clare - 2 May 2003 18:09
The beer is excellent! And they have a happy hour Monday to Friday from 5 to 7 with, eg, Greene King IPA at just 1.60 a pint (normally 2.04). Similar discounts on various other drinks. Bar staff are efficient and friendly, unlike many of the pubs in the area.
James Farmer - [email protected] - 17 Oct 2002 10:46
The best thing about this pub is the food. It is excellent value for money and good "tucker". The wine is nice too, and cheap for central London at about 8 quid a bottle. The beer is ok. It's a bit of a locals pub but ok at lunchtimes cos it means its not too busy with worky-types - a bit of a hidden gem at the moment.
Clare Griffiths - 25 Mar 2002 16:29
