please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

A good pub with a slightly Polish twist (the landlord seems to be Polish and in the run-up to Euro 2012 they were serving Polish food and doing Polish beer at a discount. Very quiet when I went in, but I assume it isn't always like that. Very locally orientated but nice. Lots of small rooms that make it somewhere interesting to explore. Pleasant.

Only me and the landlord on a Saturday lunchtime, so hard to judge atmosphere, but this is an absolute classic multi-roomed pub, and the unmarked Ruddles was very good indeed. I love it, but it needs some custome from the Waters Gree et al.

Now reopened.
As noted, this pub is on CAMRA's National Inventory of Historic Pub Interiors so I've been angling for a visit for a while and was pleased to find it open. It's status is justified, as this is a classic unspoilt multi-roomed pub, although unfortunately its future still seems to be in the balance. An entrance corridor leads to a smallish snug behind the bar where all the locals were congregating on my visit. Beyond this and up a small set of stairs is a larger room apparently reserved for diners although there was no sign of food on my visit. A window here opens out to a steepish rock face full of plants and garden gnomes, quite pleasant. Just to the right as you enter is a tiny vault which also has bar access.
Each room is packed with brasses, trophies, candlesticks and other memorabilia on the walls, old copper tables and wall-mounted seating. No piped music.
On the beer front, there were three handpumps, two covered and one without a clip, so I didn't expect real ale to be available. However, the unmarked one dispensed Ruddles, which was surprisingly good for a beer I usually find bland.
A fine traditional pub, not a rival to the Waters Green Tavern in beer terms but worth a visit in its own right for the interior. Not sure where this one is going, so I urge a visit while you can.

CLOSED

Small, attractive looking pub situated in what appears to be the old part of Macclesfield. Having climbed up a small, but steepish, cobbled street to reach the pub, I wasn't desperately happy to find it closed with no signs of life at around 7.45 pm last Thursday. There's still an Estate Agents board on an outside wall.

I think we can safely assume that this pub is closed at present.

Let's hope it reopens as a pub soon as it's on CAMRA's National Inventory of Unspoilt Interiors.

Found by accident on the way to the Waters Green Tavern. Interesting old-style pub. Only Theakstons available beerwise but in good form. Notice board outside says it's up for sale and suitable for alternative uses. Guv'nor says it isn't. Have uploaded photo which hopefully will appear in due course.

This pub's been closed all day/night the last few times I've been past, but appears to have been tarted up outside, has it closed?

Cracking little pub full of atmosphere and a warm welcome. The pub is divided into very small rooms and the bar area looks full when there's only one member of staff behind the bar. If in Macclesfield again, I would certainly call in again for a visit.

Follow up to comment 14/4/07. The Castle was closed due to illness but is still running. This is a very old traditional pub with original gas light at the bar! Good cheap food and beer at lunchtimes.

The Castle appears to have shut down. It was closed on a fine Friday evening Friday evening (13/4/07 18:45). There was not notice displayed but there were no lights showing.
