please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Visited here one lunchtime during the week and found it surprisingly quiet. Had 4 ales on tap so I decided to try the Brains SA Gold which was very nicely kept. There is a food menu which consists of your mainly typical pub grub though I have to say the steak & ale pie was tasty. Needless to say the interior is comedy-themed with pictures of famous comedians of past and present so I would like to do one of the comedy nights there sometime in the future.

I can't say what it's like there in the evenings as it maybe totally different from the daytime but I couldn't really fault it from my visit and I would recommend a visit if ever you're passing.

Feels a bit like a hotel bar, but does sell a number of real ales on draft. Great place to go if looking for a quiet drink, as can usually get a seat/table.

Was in here last saturday afternoon about 3 o'clock and there were only 3 people in here.No real ale, usual bland chain-pub interior,if you want a drink in a pub go next door to the Tom Cribb.

Downstairs is quite a good place for a gig as the room is a regular shape, improving the acoustics, and people are not likely to drift in off the street and hold loud conversations on their mobile phone while the band are trying to play. Bands heard include Twisted Trees and the Silver Wizard Project, both of whom can now say they have played the West End (well, under it in fact).
However 3.70 for a pint of lemonade and lime juice is rather steeper than the north face of the Eiger and stopped me having a second one. People tend to drink soft drinks more slowly than beer anyway so why not encourage the customer to drink more of them by charging less?
I can't say much about the upstairs except that it does coffee, which was ok and not too expensive either.

a fantastic place to enjoy a good pint or a glass of wine, the comedy club is not bad either, was there last week and I had a really good time, I would definitly recomend this place.

About ten years ago this was a proper pub, four real ales, switched on management, and for a west end pub a bit of character. All this was on the ground floor level, in the cellar bar they had karaoke, discos etc at the weekends, and the upstairs bar was a piano bar with a very funny, very camp pianist. It was a real provider of choice, if you didn't like loud music you stayed in the traditional bar, but then it went the way of a lot of pubs and became plastic. No ales, no choice and no atmosphere. Its now dirty, badly managed and in need of some adult customers. Why?
When will thes pubco's learn that if it ain't broke don't fix it.

What a dump

Mr Monkfish (love the Fast Show reference) is right in that this is mainly a venue for up and coming bands. As a band that was neither I was quite fortunate to play here but also to identify it's shortcomings beyond being a good live venue, namely:

1. It's expensive and rather sparse in terms of variety. Still, if you like fizzy lager here's a reasonable place to drink it and watch sports.

2. It's souless. It looks like an ident-i-kit magnolia washed refurb pub where any character has been sapped out of it which makes it bitterly ironic that it's called...

3. The Comedy. Jokes aside about 'The funny thing is the prices and lack of fun you have while in there' aside, it's the first pub I know that could be the name of a band. Think about it - The Strokes, The Hives, The Music, The Comedy

I'm ranting now. It's a load of rubbish, and you shoud only go if your mates are playing downstairs in a band.

BTW - Stop advertising yourselves on here you mugs

Actually quite like this place. Staff are friendly and really fast behind the bar. Its also huge, so there is usally a place to find a seat and watch the football. The decor is a problem, and there isn't much atmosphere when its empty. When its full though, especially during big matches, the atmosphere is wicked! It really is the best alternative to the hideousness that is The Sports Cafe, will definitely be watching the Champions League Final here. Agree that the lack of real ales is a what lets it down, but I was talking to one of the barmaids yesterday and they mentioned there is a huge refurb in the pipeline, and a selection of ales is planned - which is great news because this place has the potential to be one of the best pubs in the area, IF they do it up right. Here's hoping...

The best thing about The Comedy is that it is usually empty during the week. Have had the top two floors to ourselves on several occasions. The big screen is alright for football.

The pub is pretty average otherwise. The main problem is a lack of real ale.

The Comedy would be funny, if it wasnt so tragic. The ground level part is really quite poor, with little charisma, character or class. No ales on, just S&N usual array of bland, tepid nitro-keg liquid. I doubt the other levels have much to offer.

Best avoided.

Current match venue for the London Blades, we havent lost a match weve watched in here and weve been coming in since August 2005.

Beer is so so and pretty pricey, the seats are comfy enough but its a bloody long climb to the top.

Stop all the crap postings about bands ... this website is about pubs. It says something when all you get are staff and promoters putting details of the latest bands up and all the other punters point out how crap a pubs this is. It desperately wants to be in Camden.
anonymous - 23 Oct 2006 01:06
I'll be honest, I couldn't give a knock about The Franks, Ceiling and other new bands. Nor do I like gigging. So to me this was just a slightly crap pub.
anonymous - 20 Apr 2006 17:39
Great place for up and coming bands, seen a band called The Franks last Friday who were great. Keep an ear out for them. The Comedy is a pretty good watering hole, ladies the loo's are not amazing but pass the test just. Bar staff are very friendly and super fast!
ARD - 28 Feb 2006 11:30
My band (Ceiling) is playing here on the 22nd Feb. I'll post a review from an gigging point of view then :-)

The Comedy Pub is probably best known for it's intimate downstairs bar which acts as a venue for up-and-coming bands and as the name of the place suggests comedy gigs and in this respet it is fine and dandy and an excellent place for an evening's entertainment with the performers literally feet away from you.
It is however also a pub, and on this score it's not quite so good. It's a sizeable building with bars on three floors, a nice unfussy appearance and reasonable laid-back atmosphere. Barstaff are friendly and by no means slow and prices are not any worse than any of the other couple of hundred over-priced boozers that litter the touristy areas of London and perform licensed muggings on drinkers. However, selection of drinks is limited and the quality is pretty poor. Every bottle of beer seems warm no matter which bar you buy it from or what time of day or night it is. Draft beer ranges from tolerable (Guiness/John Smith's) to nigh-on undrinkable (Any of the lagers). It's this key detail that lets the pub down, if as much attention to detail was put into the drinks as they put into organizing the entertainment side of things, this would be an excellent boozer as all the other key ingrdients seem to already be in situe. Not terrible, just disappointing.

Don't Miss Monkeyrush Live at The Comedy, Picadilly on 26th October at 9pm!!
The Comedy proves time and time again to be a great hang out to catch live new bands (especially during the week). Complete with two bars (one downstairs in live room and one upstairs), this place provides nice nosh and a top atmosphere with cool people!! Must be checked out!! At night the place comes to life! :)
Flippy - 19 Oct 2005 12:15
Not a nice place. Bad service, looks appalling, and the smell of the 'raspberry' flavoured toilet fresheners from the mens loo, envelopes you 50 yards down the street.
mistral1969 - 1 Feb 2005 08:53
Used to be great before the "refurb". Real shame, they need to do it up again, as it could be one of the best venues in central London. Great layout, and now part of the Spirit Group.
Groovy - 26 Sep 2004 07:20
Not bad for a refurb, the downstairs bar does Kareokee nights which are a laugh.Im answer to Garys question about Newquey Brown Ale,you can buy it in bottles in the "Spice of life" and the "sussex".
Nick Hamer - 9 Jul 2004 18:38
BIG pub. but it's pot luck what floors are open if you are visiting in fringe hours. magic room right at the top with a quizzo and an atrium thingy
oliver - 5 Nov 2003 18:21
Not the same since the refurb. The downstairs bar used to be solid and they did Newquay Steam Lager. Where in London can you get that any more?
Gary - 4 Jul 2003 17:45
Big pub just been refurbished. It's on three floors with a sports bar upstairs. A standard kind of bar in the middle and a club like basment bar below. Open till 2am most nights and live music most weekends, very freindly staff, not bad range of beers.
