user reviews of the Churchill Tavern, Ramsgate

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Ripple Steam Piston Broke, Gadds#5, Wantsum One Hop & Welton Old Cocky amongst the beers available on my last visit.
I had the Wantsum and the Ripple Steam both of which were fine which was a relief as I had heard reports the ales were not as well kept as they had been.

Love sitting here looking at the view over the harbour and Pegwell Bay. I guess the place gets a lot busier in the evenings with live music available.
I remember when the place was called Van Goghs and was very lively!

Didn't try the food. Maybe next time!

nicely decorated pub, with a lot of wood, smells a little like a church because of this. Have eaten here a few times and can say it does excellent food, the beer battered cod and chips takes some beating and this is not nouveau cuisine size protions. Good selection of beers and lagers as well as large selection of wines, something for everyone here, along with the views of the harbour, I find this a very pleasant pub I will be revisiting often.

I remember this place when it was the Van Gogh!

I always visit here when I return to Ramsgate. Along with the Artillery Arms just round the corner it makes a fine real ale pub double.
Possibly not as friendly as the Artillery the view across the harbour makes up for it.

The beers available on my recent visit included Dark Star Hophead (which was excellent), Canterbury Ales Knights Tale and New Zealand Pale Ale from the same brewery and Whitstable Pearl of Kent.

Quite a mix of customers, I was tempted by the food many of them were getting stuck into but managed to resist as I was intending to eat later. Next time maybe!

First pub of 4 on my recent trip to Ramsgate. All 4 pubs sought out via conversations with Camra members, keen drinkers and from the 2013 Beer Guide.

Large pub, kitchen, tea room situated just above the ferry terminal. Wooden floorboards and comfy sofas are the order of the day here.

The food looked blinking good especially for the price and was much discussed at by me and my group during our time here.

4 pumps offering beer from Skinners, Tring, Dark Star and Gadds (local Ramsgate brewery). I had 2 pints of Gadds Common Conspiracy and a pint from the Tring brewery and all were good. Also on tap were Ruddles and GK IPA aswell as 2 ciders, 1 from Thatcher's and the other a super strength offering from Bibbendum., which was completely transparent but very dry.

A decent pub for a few beers my only compliant being the waiting time at the bar while various women and children were served their coffee's and hot chocolate.

Still worth a visit however and a decent place for good quality ales.

Arrived to very loud music early in the evening. There was a band playing. The two girls actually had good voices but as is often the case were completely out maneuvered by the instrument players. Employ someone to mix for you girls!! The chap playing bass guitar should of had the strings removed, then he would have sounded fine! ;-) We escaped to the very back which was strictly reserved for diners, of which ther were none at the time. The staff were very happy for us to do so.The band gave up the ghost at 7.30 so we lingered on. Glad we did. Tremendous ales on the pumps. Service was very friendly and the people behind the bar quite knowledgeable. This is a place in good hands and will return any time I am in this area. For ale drinkers I highly recommend it. Lovely!

Not sure about all this "out the back" business mentioned below; I was in here last Friday evening late doors and a range of about 5 perfectly-acceptable cask beers were featuring, large as life, on the pumps at the main bar. Perhaps I arrived at the back entrance (steady!)? In any event, what I found here was good cheer and beer, with a clearly experienced landlord keeping an eye on everything and ensuiring the smooth running of the bar whilst chipping in and serving/clearing too. The ale - please don't expect me to recall exactly what it was; it had been a long day - was I do remember on good form and certainly had it not been so late we'd have stayed for more.

Staff were chatty and I asked why there seemed to be noisy club music coming from the basement. Apparently, the Churchill has student accommodation in its rooms above, and as it was the end of term, a party was being held. I wouldn't let this bother any of you - there was no ostensible signs of silliness or trouble, and the event ended abruptly bang on midnight when the music was stopped. I got the impression that the pub and the student sides of the business can and do operate quite exclusively of each other. As to the social make-up of the other punters at other more civilised times of the day, I couldn't say, but given the interior suggested quite a smart, well-managed venue, I'd guess this is at the upper end of the pub spectrum.

All told this was a decent place in a nice area of town, and I'd be likely to pop in again when next in the area.

A very nice chap as landlord, but rather than keep good beers on the bar (often stale and inspid beers), the good stuff is "out the back" for those that ask.
Perhaps putting on one less ale on the bar so as to increase turnover of the remaining ones would be an answer.

great pub, friendly landlord, friendly locals, I came in here three nights running last week whilst staying in Ramsgate, and by the third night I was being treated as if I'd been using the pub for years, the food was good, I'd recommend the specials board, and the beer was tops with a good selection and well looked after, there's some great seating overlooking Pegwell Bay and the harbour, and if and when I'm in Thanet, I'd certainly go back for some more 8/10

We visited last night and drank Pearl of Kent from The Whitstable Brewery which we really liked. There were others on offer but we didnt try them but there seemed a good choice.

The pub itself felt very nice, airy but also traditional feel. We sat at the window seats in the pool section looking out over the sea. Their food menu looked attractive but we were not eating so cant comment on that.

There were a selection of clients, some families, older couples and groups but it felt comfortable and friendly. We were there fairly early so I dont know if it stays like this through the evening.

Had a pint in here on the day of the Planet Thanet beer fest a few weeks ago, fine pub complaints. Was quiet at time of visit on a saturday afternoon. If on a real ale crawl of Ramsgate then this place is definitely a must visit.

Ive been working in Ramsgate for the last 6 weeks. What lucky locals to have such a splendid place as the Churchill Tavern on their doorstep. An asonishing variety of Real Ales, over 30 since I started coming here. All in prime condition - well done landlord Peter. Food is tasty and good value as well and the sea views from the bar at the top are magic. I'll be back.....

Large building nestling on the seafront offering good harbour and sea views. Offers up to 6 real ales from far and wide. I was amazed indeed delighted to be given the chance to drink Adnams extra(Why on earth did they temporarily stop brewing this fine beer), very rare.

Not as good as I remembered it but, pleasant drinking.

A ramble of tables and chairs , and there is not as much space inside as the outside suggests.

Perhaps the largest choice of ale in Ramsgate , but not the most pleasant place to drink them , purely my opinion.

Enjoy visiting this pub. I recall when it used to be called Van Goghs.
Spacious with a good view of the harbour.
Usually seem to have several beers on including some less common ones.

Almost as good as the Artillery for beer. It's where foreigners such as English language students used to go, hence it's an oasis of civilization in an area where Regency town houses are literally falling into ruin. Parking impossible.

Very picturesqu pub and the ale is very palatable.
My only criticism is that it is such a barn of a place that there has to be about 60 customers before there is any sort of atmosphere.
Peter the New manager at least understands his ale and how to run a cellar.

Been here many times, they always have a good selection of Real Ales on tap, which changes often.

For halloween they were serving Hobgoblin which was a pretty crisp ale, they theme things well.

Plus there was the fancy dress party they had downstairs in the Clubroom..... was all good fun...

Always lives bands there, every weekend, they had Misty's Big Adventure playing live, it really fit in well.

And I have to agree the food is great... some say a bit pricy, and it's so so, but it's well worth it given the levels of taste, proportion and presentation...

Need to come over on a Tuesday for steak night some time and from what I can see on thier new website, they have a great christmas menu on this year...

The quiet local area and the gorgeous sea view over Ramsgate's Habour is just and added bonus..... kinda like a cherry on top of the icing.

Tuesday night.. steak night.. Very good value, just wonder if any profit made on two steaks for a fiver! Maybe from Botswana! Nice selection of real ales and a good bet for a midweek night..
