A pub like no other.
On my personel mission to visit every pub in Britain i had been putting this one off.
However me and my game bird finally plucked up the courage to give it a go.
From the outside the place just looks ridiculous and falling to pieces, however once inside it is like a tardis and really quite atmospheric.
Very cheap drinks (pint of trad cider £2.10!) and a old school likeable landlord.

This pub is an institution nobody here gives a flying f**k about what the place looks like, a refurb would ruin the place. If half the roof blew off no oner in here would bat an eyelid they would just carry on drinking their cider!

You can shove your gastro pub up your arse!

100/10

Rumour has it the Gables is going to have a £35 make over this year. Great pub, great selection of cider, great people, great bar staff, especially the young lady who works on a Monday lunchtime ;-) Remember going in numerous times but invariably don't remember leaving. Don't be put off by how it looks. Actually, f**k it, we're off there now ......

Filthy from the outside, worse inside.
Full of racist skinheads, with more black eyes than brain cells.
Nearly always a police car stationed outside, looking to catch the latest prison escapee or crack dealer.

I was the curate at St Thomas's Church, just down the road from this pub in Cowick Street, a few years ago, and (apart from the First and Last under the previous management) I wouldn't drink nowhere else other than the Green Gables. It's full of characters (a lot of Exeter's Irish community drink here). Bob, the landlord, is a very likeable bloke, and you will never be short of conversation. This is classic spit and sawdust: a pub just as it should be; without constant Sky TV and juke boxes. It was a real home-from-home for me. Thoroughly recommended.

Friendly customers, nutty bar staff and a flirtatious landlord! Excellent entertainment value so if your fresh out of the local nut house, welcome!

Great pub without a student in sight. Real staff, real cider and real fist fights every weekend. Bliss!

A good old fashioned pub serving all sorts of cider and ales, lovely beer garden and a warm welcome
