user reviews of the Jolly Cricketers, Seer Green

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

The Rebellion (from Marlow) is in superb condition at The Cricks at the moment.

A most pleasant return to “The Cricks”, and this time its dining room too on Wednesday evening. There were three draft beers available beforehand (the fourth was off), and then into the dining room for excellent food, quickly prepared with attentive service. I went for the Cricketer’s Fish and Chips, Grilled Cod fillet with Beer battered Cod Tongue and crushed Peas, Gribiche Sauce and Hand cut Chips. This, with a good bottle of white wine between three of us, then the ‘Valrhona’ Chocolate Brownie with Cherries and Pistachio Ice Cream, made for a fine meal.

A warm and friendly village pub with 4 real ales of good quality. Busy, which shows its local popularity. Small but relaxing garden at rear. Worth another visit if in the area.

I called in here at lunchtime today. There were at least four draught beers on tap; what I had was fine, albeit £3.70 a pint. The place is clean and airy, and family-friendly.
My concern was the apparently offhand attitude of the young lady serving to what I might have; furthermore, not once were the words “please” or “thank you” proffered. In my world these things do matter!
pubsampler - 8 Mar 2014 14:41
The Cricketers has a well-heeled air exemplified by the marques in the car park, the dress sense of the clientele and the prices on the menu, but the service is friendly and efficient, the ale selection varied and the surroundings veer more towards cosy village pub than anything else which holds this establishment in good stead. Impressive.
Komakino - 7 Mar 2014 10:19
I go back to The Cricketers about once a year hoping that it's attitude to food has changed but unfortunately it just seems to be getting worse. Ordered a ham and cheese ploughmans, cost 8 95, for that I got 2 small slices of ham (admittedly off the bone and good) 2 small triangles of supermarket cheddar, one slice of bread cut in half, 2 pickle onions and a small amount of greenery, it all looked lost on a wooden board. The beer on the other hand was very good, 4 real ales decently served by a very pleasant landlady. Please, please give value for money on the food and then I could become a regular!

Nice enough place. Rammed with diners, beer fine but choice a bit bland.
pwilkins - 24 Sep 2012 11:42
I was in here yesterday evening for an informal committee meeting, and things were good. There were five different draught beers available, with Amanda the landlady, her husband and son serving quickly and efficiently. i had a pleasant welcome back too from Amanda. So, recommended.

I was back here today after an unusually long absence. The bar boasted a wide range of guest beers which were widely sampled by my table with approval. Friendly and efficient service with both the landlord and landlady keeping on top of the surges in demand. I haven't eaten there for ages, so cannot comment directly on the food.

Seer Green is well served by "The Cricks", and now also by the re-opened and radically renovated Three Horseshoes, . Perhaps someone will open a review on the latter, which I have found to be good value so far?
pubsampler - 20 Aug 2011 18:31
Very likeable smart pub, with good area for drinking. Friendly staff, lots of interest, good bar snacks, average quality beer from an interesting range.
mtaylor40 - 11 Jun 2011 17:40
I came here for dinner the other night and the food was nothing short of amazing!! It was worth EVERY PENNY that we spent. I will recommend this pub to everyone and definately come back!
Contrary to the comment below, I would go back time and time again for the food alone. You can tell that the chefs have a lot of talent and with a background in catering I know what I'm talking about.
There is not a place for miles around that I can say compares to the fantastic meal I had last week.
My other half who finds something to complain about every plate of food he sees could not find a bad word to say.
Well done.
username86 - 10 May 2011 13:50
12 months on since my last visit, and my comments remain very much the same, welcoming pub with a good range of beers, but overpriced, pretentious food. Unfortunately that means I will go somewhere else in future that also does good beer and whose food is better value.
Randyray - 20 Apr 2011 12:34
As a villager was delighted when the pub was refurbished and became quite a fan; good atmosphere, well kept beer, great bar snacks and food.
However, the last 6 or 7 encounters have not been positive. You can't eat at short notice, it's always fully booked, if you pop in for a drink you can't sit down because all the tables are reserved for diners. The last 2 times I was there for a drink, we all had to stand around empty reserved tables for 2 rounds before leaving. Feels like they are only interested in Diners.
My last encounter was for a Christmas do for 15. The food was still tasty but the portions were mean, the service very slow and the staff stressed. My side of the famous chips arrived when we had all finished eating; 9 chips for 2.50! Those of us from the village in the gathering, about 10, all agreed that the portions were much smaller than in the summer and we felt a bit ripped off. Not value for money or a good dining experience in such a chaotic atmosphere. We will not be back to eat again. I had heard as much from talk in the village but I like to se for myself, I was disappointed but not surprised.
The Cricketers is a victim of its own success (and I am pleased they are doing well) but with it the portions have been reduced and the prices hiked. If you find yourself without the kids unexpectedly and decide to pop to the village pub for eats and drinks and a short walk home; the usual benefits of a village local; forget it! If you want to drink and chat you have to do it standing!
I feel like I have lost my village pub and in its place is a pretentious, overpriced restaurant. Not really what a village needs. Shame!

Facto - 24 Jan 2011 01:00
Had a cracking evening at the Cricketers. Lovely local beers (Marlow, Tring and Chilterns) and nice atmosphere.

My only negative was having to leave my debit card behind the counter to open a bar tab. I have been advised not to let my cards out of site, so it would be nice if they changed this policy (not that anything untoward happened)
tadredge - 13 Aug 2010 09:45
I can't comment on the food as we didn't eat here but as a place to drink this place was excellent. There was a good selection of local ales and a hand-pull scrumpy which was wonderful. All the staff were extremely friendly and the place had a great atmosphere. There is a beer garden and the place is obviously very popular as it was very busy last night (a Wednesday) and they can't all have been there for the Morris dancers! not a huge car park so that could be a problem but a great local.
dyyony - 22 Jul 2010 08:27
I do hope the owners read this: I used to be a big fan of this pub. Great food at sensible prices. I especially loved the chips. I ate here this week and was horrified at the prices. OK if you're eating in the evening, but not lunch. I ended up choosing a burger for 11, which used to be 8, and it turned up looking very lonley on a flat platter, in a nice bun with one lettuce leaf (dressed) and a pickle. All great, but it looks stingy. No tomato like the old one, although it did have a scoop of yummy onion relish. The burger itself was ok, but not the home-made type that you often hope for when you pay that much. We had been asked if we wanted cheese, and were charged 1 for the pleasure. The chips turned up in a tin; they were very well cooked, but there were only about ten of them, and I mourned for the old slightly sweet fresh cut ones they used to serve in a generous bowl.

We were the only diners at 1.30, so maybe I'm not the only one who feels this way.

Please do a lunch menu with better prices and more generous helpings! I applaud your effort at makig the pub gourmet, but it is not a London restaurant! You are verging on the pretentious. Seer Green is the least pretentious village I know, so please go back to what you were doing so well!
cazza0104 - 17 Jun 2010 10:58
I'm a fan of this pub, the beer is very good, the food is very good, the staff are friendly and polite, but having eaten here again recently, it was disappointing to have to wait around 45mins for the pudding to be served on an average lunchtime dining day. Ah well... maybe just one of those things, so I'll be back.
Glenco - 30 May 2010 08:47
A very nice pub with beers from 4 local breweries, service was good and friendly, the place was very clean and tidy and very welcoming. However, the food ist pretentous, this and that added to the descriptions so that you can increase the price. Sandwiches were served on a wooden chopping board rather than a plate, chips, about 10 of them for 2.50, (thrice cooked??) are served in a tin can, why ??
Randyray - 25 May 2010 21:29
I met a mate for a pint in London on Monday evening in the Dover Castle, Weymouth Mews. He lives in Chiswick but had recently been to Seer Green to visit friends and they had taken him to eat at the Jolly Cricketers. Knowing I live in Gerrards Cross, only a few miles from it, he recommended it so highly I took the wife there for lunch the following day.
We weren't disappointed. Although the food did take a while, in fairness the menu warns "we don't do fast food, we do good food as fast as we can" and, when it came, it was really REALLY good!!
We liked the place so much we've bought tickets for Monday coming for us and three other friends to a book launch at the pub by Bill Turnbull (BBC1 presenter) on Bee Keeping and also booked in for Sunday Lunch for eight of us on June 13th when they have Morris Men on at 12 noon..
The power of a good recommendation!!!
Attwellicus - 21 May 2010 19:38
Lovely village pub in lovely Bucks village, though I got the impression you should be pleased you're able to eat here, rather than the other way round. They were "very busy" when I arrived though I saw only around 12 people in the pub and dining room. No welcome, just a look of "I'm flustered enough as it is without YOU being here" from both guys on the bar. Pint of Chiltern Pearl was good but lunch (a sandwich!!) took 35 minutes to arrive. I was sitting outside and had actually gone in the pub to get a refund when lunch finally turned up. Won't be going back
cocktailmaker99 - 21 Apr 2010 16:32
We went to this pub in the summer with my mum, uncle and our small dog. We loved in the interior, such a transformation and they were very welcoming of the dog. We had a 3 course meal including the roast and the staff were very friendly and welcoming. We had a lovely lunch and we are planning to come back. Thank you
Wool - 26 Oct 2009 12:44
Beautiful quaint little pub with well kept beers & wines & fantastic food.
The host & hostess and staff make you feel really welcome.
Although small it really feels homely, if you are planning to eat book first to avoid disappointment as the pub is small, but delightfully cosy.
We took my 82 year old mother there today for Sunday lunch and she was delighted.

RKR - 4 Oct 2009 19:06
Visited over Bank Holiday weekend on both the Saturday and Sunday and pleased to discover beer festival going on in the garden. 16 ales I think on offer from 3 local breweries along with homemade pork pie. Very amiable and knowledgable staff and whole pub had local feel to it. Cricket books, bats, photos etc interesting too, if you like cricket. A little gem of a pub this. Only negative I can add is that roast dinner was a little on the pricey side. Maybe over rating it slightly with my 10/10 but is much better than it's current rating suggests and deserves to be pushed up. Landlord of a nearby pub said The Cricketers had been turned round in the last months 12 or so

I too had noticed the award from Chiltern District Council and as Seer Green is on my rat run through the Chalfonts from office to home when the western section of the M25 is misbehaving, I decided to pop in and have a look.
The Jolly Cricketers is a decent enough looking two bar pub on the main Chalfont Road through the village of Seer Green, with a small but pleasant garden area out the back supporting several umbrella bench seats.
It looks like it used to be the standard Public / Saloon bar set up , but now the smaller bar to the right is set up as a dining area , and the larger left side bar is the more standard pub drinking area. It is cleanly decorated to a wood floor with wooden bench seating either side of a large central fire place. It still retains some of the public bar feel with cricketing paraphernalia on the walls and a dart board in the corner, although this appeared to be more for decoration rather than use.
It is now a Free House and advertised weekly changing real ales from local breweries. It has four handpumps, three for local brewery ales as advertise and a fourth for Cider. The beers on during my visit were Rebellion IPA, Vale Brewery VPA, and Chiltern Ale from the Chiltern Brewery. I tried the Chiltern ale and the Vale Brewery VPA, both of which were very well kept. Wasnt too enamoured with the Chiltern Ale but the VPA was an excellent hoppy golden ale for a summers evening.
I found the Jolly Cricketers to be a very good pub. Looking below I do feel that some of the locals have probably been dazzled by the transformation from shit hole to decent boozer which appears to have taken place here and are mightily relieved to have a good pub serving their manor. But for me theres not enough here to support the eulogising for a very top BITE rating.
But I totally agree that this is a very good above average village pub and is now batting well above its current BITE rating of 5, and if it was my local, I would be only too pleased as well

Gann - 6 Aug 2009 11:22
excellent refurb. Seer Green home owners should be thanking the landlord for making the village more erm...villagey. Stunning, stunning turnaround.
whitto - 5 Aug 2009 13:12
Totally agree with Pubsampler's comments - this Pub was a worthy winner. Unfortunately, it's ratings stem from the time when it was a dump, so the only way to improve the overall score is for ALL the locals to vote for it with it's deserved score. Over time, hopefully, this will push it up to 9 or 10 out of 10, which it deserves!
bitterboy1970 - 22 Jul 2009 18:06
Congratulations to Amanda and her team on "The Cricks" winning the 2009 Chiltern District Council Pub of the Year (and Community Pub) competition! The current user rating on this site for this pub clearly does it an injustice.
pubsampler - 21 Jul 2009 14:24
Visited for the first time and found the place to be friendly, warm and serving a good pint of ale. Going be the comments from a while back there has a lot of effort gone into this pub and now should hold its own very well!
deadleg - 4 Mar 2009 19:24
This place is vastly improved now, decent beer, pleasant atmosphere, food looks good too, although haven't tried it yet. Nice to have a good quality pub within walking distance! Deserves a better rating than it currently shows, so here's one above the average...
daverrm - 12 Feb 2009 13:06
This is now a really excellent pub, friendly, warm and welcoming, a few years ago it was a dump what a difference a new landlord makes. The food is home cooked and very good although, inevitably, you have to wait for it. The only problem is that with no real opposition in Seer Green it gets crowded.
Randyray - 12 Jan 2009 11:32
Wow, it truely amazing the transformation they have achieved. Clean, welcoming, friendly.

I'm actually proud to call the cricketers my local!

Cant say i've tried the beer with beetles and twigs in, but the lager is good, never had a flat pint (unlike the horseshoes, 3 dead pints in a row, not even a bubble!) and the range of spirits is above what i expected.

bigray - 3 Dec 2008 21:56
We'd been to this pub a while back, when it was a nice, village pub nothing special, but a convenient stop off point for us. On the same route again we thought we'd pop in and this time we were bowled over (pardon the cricketting pun!) by the change.

It's transformed! Still a country pub but more on the side of gastro, than bisto - really great decor, atmosphere and delicious food. Good, simple things with really fresh, clearly good ingredients, we don't live locally but some of the upcoming events (the pub quiz, Greek nights) looked tempting enough to make us travel.
angelisb - 19 Oct 2008 08:56
Really pleased to see the effort that has gone into this place....friendly welcome (gorgeous smile BTW blonde Barperson!), and a pretty tidy half of Black Sheep...would have loved to stay for more and some food, as the Menu looked OK too....will be back soon!! A MASSIVE improvement, and just what Seer Green needed!!!!
bitterboy1970 - 22 Aug 2008 19:12
It gets better with every visit. Last time I commented I said the beer was excellent but now the food is up there too. All things on the menu are freshly made and cooked - you can tell. No lorries outside this pub delivering frozen food which is re-heated. The themed days are a great idea. I wish I was more local.

Yep... strange how small features affect your judgement, but the stripped and varnished floorboards do add significantly to the ambience of the place. Good beer, attentive landlord, pleasant female staff... that does it for me. Earlier posters have mentioned the previous dark aspects of the place... well, all that's now long gone. If you're local, or just a visitor to the area, give it a try... I doubt you'll be disappointed. I'll certainly be back. No opinion on food, didn't eat. (6+).
Glenco - 18 Jul 2008 20:06
What can I say!!! I popped into the pub on Monday lunchtime as I saw the balloons and knew it had re opened. What a change. The pub looked clean, the floors are divine, nothing like light, real wood flooring. The new owners have opened up the place using windows , and it is no longer dark and dingy. there are brand new toilets (with hot water, hand soap, paper towels and loo roll!) which are a god send to say the least.

The wine selction has been carfeully chosen, and there is a large selction for all tastes. I love the idea of the 'drink of the village' of Cava with cherry liquor. I sampeled one of these and it was delicious. One thing I also liked wa the fact they had a variety of spirits, I as a gin drinker could not beleive the selction, Gordons, Bombay and Hendricks all under one roof, all reasonably priced.

The new landlady and landlord have clearly worked very hard at restoring the pub, and have made a fantastic job of it. I for one can not wait for the food to start in the next couple of weeks, as I have heard the new chef is very talented (and local!)

The staff were friendly, helpful and for once they wanted to serve you, rather than talking to thier friends. The new uniforms are good too, as you know who to ask if you have any queries or wanted any other information.

Seer Green has long waited for a local pub of this standard, and I hope before long it is back to being the hub of the village!!!

Well Done to whomever has taken the time out to refurbish this pub to the standard it is now, and make it back to the gem it once was....

pubmaster81 - 26 Mar 2008 16:44
Wow! What a change. No more dirt and grime. The new owners have done wonders in such a short time. We popped in for a quick drink last night and really enjoyed ourselves. Already there is a warm, buzzing atmosphere. We received a very friendly welcome from the landlady and all the staff were cheerful - and that despite all the hard work they must have put in over the last couple of weeks. The London Pride and Speckled Hen were both good. Can't wait for the food tostart n a couple of weeks.
ed_p - 24 Mar 2008 16:50
Here's a note on my visit to the Cricketers on its reopening today (Sunday)lunchtime. In short, it's well worth a visit; I sampled the London Pride- possibly expensive at 2.90 a pint, but very drinkable. There's also IPA and another regular beer. I overheard good comments about the draft lager too. The floors have been cleaned and are back to visible natural wood, which must have taken a great deal of work The tap room is now called the public bar. The room is open only as a bar for now, but in a couple of weeks a chef will be in place and doing the cooking. The landlords and most staff are local- I understand that the chef will be the only "import".

The new landlord and his wife are clearly keen to make it a success. Its layout has always meant it has a much better potential to be a real "village" pub than the Three Horseshoes.

I'll be there again soon.

pubsampler - 23 Mar 2008 16:22
Where do I start?!! What a horrible pub. I popped in as I live fairly close and have not been in for ages. It really is horrible. They openly served under age girls and did not bat an eyelash. I tried the new chinese menu, this is awful food, full of MSG and rubbery chicken. The barman 'James' was terrible and the lager he eventually served was flat. I know he is called James as all of his mates would simply shout his name and he would serve them and not pay any attention to the other customers waiting. Seriously...... Do not go here. I tried the other village pub over the road (The Three Horseshoes) that was heaving, this was much better, more friendly and cosy. I got chatting to a chap who was with a big group, turned out they were the Seer Green PTA, if The Three Horseshoes is good enough for the local PTA then its good enough for me!! Oh.... And the food looked amazing, shame i'd eaten slop from over the road!. In summary, If you want good pub food and good beer, go to The Three Horseshoes. If you want a chinese, go to a proper takeaway.
neil_peters - 12 Nov 2007 11:31
Popped in here in the way home from Wembley the other week, in spite of poor comments.
The staff did seem a bit disinterested, true, but the beer (London Pride) was sufficiently pleasant to have another pint and was certainly better than at our last visit to the Three Horseshoes; although I haven't been there since it changed hands earlier in the year.
We also sampled from the recently added Chinese/Thai Take Away menu, which was as good as any of the other takeaways in the area.
It is not a great pub, but its certainly not bad, and may benefit from more custom.
anonymous - 18 Sep 2007 10:06
It is as bad as they say, it's a dump
anonymous - 2 Jun 2007 20:01
Visited today for a quick half while walking in the countryside - friendly service, good beer, nothing wrong with the Gents. Either it's improved or some people have been a tad excessive with their criticism.
John_R - 22 Apr 2007 21:22
LOL. Just returned there to see if it has changed, and, yes, it really has got worse. I have been in toilets in Calcutta that were nicer to be in than this dive, they smelled better, they were cleaner and they had less flies.

I previously said that burning was too good for this place. I was being generous

cynicalbastard - 21 Oct 2006 15:25
Both the pubs in the village are weak but the crick's is the lowest of both. Staff that would rather talk to their friends who seem to live there. uncomfortable seating, dark n dingy decor. Just the place you want to go to relax with friends. NOT. Never tried the food, not brave enough.

Could be a very good pub if they tried to attract people instead of repelling them.
anonymous - 29 Jul 2006 17:41
Run down, food that redefines salmonella and surly, disinterested staff. A new low in mediocrity, they lower the bar for everyone. No saving graces whatsoever. Burning is too good for this place
cynicalbastard - 25 Mar 2006 12:54
Difficult one to rate, as it should be a really nice pub as the setting is postcard-pretty and the village is a lovely little place. Problem is that the owners seem to have lost interest, and things have really gone downhill in recent years. The beer is good, but the food is very poor - again, there just doesn't seem to be any effort made. Things like dirty toilets and broken floor tiles just make the place look a bit run down.

On the other, it's always busy on a Friday and Saturday night and the drinks prices are very reasonable. Juke box must make a fortune, and if you want a place to enjoy the footie on a Saturday afternoon it's the place to go (be warned if you don't like footie!).

I reckon the place would be vastly improved if the staff smiled a bit more!
