user reviews of the Queens Head, Aylesbury

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

The Queen's Head is located on Temple Square, which is another little oasis away from the shopping areas of Aylesbury. You can reach it by passing through the alleyway next to the King's Head. I understand they are owned by the same people. The Queen's Head is much quieter and far more intimate. But Doom Bar was the only real ale available. Still a nice, relaxing visit.

What a great surprise, this pub is transformed, great choice of very interesting bitters all in top condition. Ver pleasant and helpfull staff, Steak and fish and chips were unbeatable.

Now worthy of some of the better pubs in Aylesbury, but time will really tell. Very pleasant polished interior and good in the long Winter evenings as it is at the moment with the dim lightning giving it a bit of atmosphere. In my previous visits since the 'big refurb' they've usually have 4 beers on; Youngs bitter is the regular & Doombar is the 'occasional' regular (sometimes Landlord), the other two have been a Tring brewery beer/St Austell Tribute or something totally different & interesting - last night there was the usual Youngs Bitter but also 3 ales from the Wolf brewery in Norfolk - I tried 2 of the them & they were well kept, 50/50 if they should have been topped up though. They are experimenting with beer so it's worth taking a look. A nice pub.

A refurbished pub, looks very nice and cosy. Beer is a bit pricey , 3 real ales to choose from, 2 'boring' and 1 'interesting' went for the Tring Sidepocket, it was about the right temperature and wasn't off but it had no condition, it was as flat as a pancake. I wish them well.

Went to the Queen's Head a couple of weeks ago before seeing Corden play at the Waterside Theatre with a couple of friends and had a really good time. It didn't used to be much but it appears to have picked itself up - the staff are really good (having been a bartender/waitress myself i'm picky about these things) and the food lovely. Wine was delicious and reasonably priced and they had a good selection of real ales (local ones available too). Will pop back and try it on a sunday for a nice roast.

After a much gossip and speculation finally opened and doesn't seem worth the wait. The dampest of squibs, a vast improvement on the previous hovel but refurbed in the generic "new/old pub" way. Awful pint of Doombar with nothing else to choose from. Possibly finding its feet but seems to have fallen at the first hurdle.

Due to a slight miscalculation when this pub was named, it was crowned The Queens Head whereas perhaps a more suitable name would have been The Queen Vic. Little did they know when confirmation was sent to the signage company that this venue, in hundreds of years to come, would pay homage to one of Britains best loved soap-operas. Please take your seats for this is Eastenders Live.

A feast of regular characters with intriguing plot lines, less frequent extras with their ever developing parts to play and the occasional bit-part players who have often appeared to have forgotten their lines. Good, no nonsense staff make up the cast in this atmospheric venue as they tread the boards with willingness and authority.

Over the years, this building has probably seen more fights than Vegas, more heartbreak than Blind Date and probably more ham over-acted theatricals than, well, perhaps Walfords very own pub on the square.

Question is what will be going on when you pay a visit?

New Landlord just taken over, nice guy, ex-forces and appears not to take any nonsense! I've been using this pub for a couple of years and witnessed its demise but things appear to be changing dramatically for the better!
Great weekend entertainment, the real ale is better than it has ever been and the previously 'dodgy' clientele have been invited to drink somewhere else. Food on a lunchtime has a limited menu but is of a good quality.
The Queens head can only be described as the a drinking pub - probably the only one left in the town. It MUST stay this way! If the new Guvnor does what he says he will do this place will return to the busy pub it once was.

If the TVP can be bothered at all with upholdng the law in this godforsaken country, read below; I try to justify my continuing support for this place with all those fond memeories of it 25+ years ago.

I'ts not looking good.

Yes..........the QH has given a new life to the real sport of Boozer Anthropology. The denizens of the deep that pass through are a source of fascination, indeed forcing the verbose cogniscenti to rethink the established pecking order for describing former. One understands that the term 'Pond-Life' no longer gets the true perception of just how awful a 21st Century Chav can actually be! An extra rank has been added, we now call these types 'Scum-sucking bottom feeders'.

As for the premises - such a waste. Traditional good old drinking hole, often with six ales on handpump - which, given the clientele, is hopelessly optimistic.
Better to offer three in good condition than double that figure inconsistent or worse. Punch Taverns have it on the market again, we understand. Given the iffy state of the economy, who'd be mad enough to take it?

Interesting pub to say the least. Not so much pub as real life soap Oprah. bickering staff, Customers arguing, shrieking women, dodgy goings on and so forth. It is a shame really when taking into account it is really a nice boozer which has a surprisingly large selection of lager and ale! It is expensive though but i wouldent mind paying it if i was surrounded by more cultured customers instead of foulmouthed ratbags covered in jewellery from argos. At least the barman with the attitude has left/been sacked and has been replaced by a lad who actually looks like he knows his business judging by the way he keeps the bar. even if he is a yid!

When one is tired of Aylesbury, one is tired of life. When one is tired of life I recommend you try the Queens Head in Aylesbury which, should one be contemplating suicide, will at least speed the process along. I only visit for the entertainment, which can vary from two people demonstrating the fine art of handbags at dawn, to overly theatrical eccentric behaviour. The smoking ban could not have come sooner in this pub, as the main danger was the odd low flying ash tray. Another interesting observation which I have witnessed over recent months is the power struggle between the owners and staff. I feel one day this will result in a scene of carnage.

The pub has a new Landlord!!! Massive improvement - The pub is clean, the atmosphere is great !!! By the look of things, this pub will only get better and better. Live entertainment and Jam nights already arranged! Good food available during the day! I will definately be returning for many more great times !!!

What a disappointment. Read about the refurb and decided to pay a visit. Took ten minutes to get served even though there were only about 12 people in the pub and was starred at like i just arrived in a spaceship. Beer was cloudy and over priced at 2.50 for IPA. Cleanliness was servely lacking and hold our nose in the toilets - not the best but the locals in there seemed to be having a good laugh at my expense!

Much better since the refurb, is now quite clean.
Wine offer / selection / price still needs alot of work.

this is a fantasically friendly pub...sometimes you cant get served easily, but keep trying . i met the most gorgeous person in there.the young and the beautiful sit nicely by the mature..the place is very sexy.. and the music nights are fabulous.....
gothstalker - 14 Feb 2006 14:59
A pub where the locals look at you as if you just landed from Mars. 2.50 for a mediocre pint of Flowers IPA. Spit and sawdust. One for the locals I think, lots of better pubs in Aylesbury. Oh yeah and the jam sessions - great, if you can ever get on stage that is. Rather cliquey.
strawbitz - 19 Sep 2005 21:43
I thought this pub disappointing. The floor behind the bar was filthy, the beer tasted as though the pipes had not been cleaned, and I got a stroppy look for asking for my pint to be topped up. The beer selection was also disappointing, Flowers - rather bland, Directors and Adnams.
You will be much better off going to the nearby Kings Head.

I was interested to see that the last comment was posted by the Landlord - Hi Les!

Nice out of the way pub, usually for the locals. Can chat to anyone there though and some nice ales on. Full of nooks and crannies to hide in.
