user reviews of the Royal Albion, Hastings

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Visited today - when a group of young spaced out individuals, displaying drug symptomatic behaviour, didn't seem to bother anyone.

Popped in yesterday, the new owners have done an excellent job, will certainly start using The Albion (it's not called The Royal Albion anymore).

This place requires a major refurb - for a start.

Opening this weekend with new ownership, expecting a big improvement.

Popped in on Thurs 17th June 2014 to see a friends band play unplugged. The pub was clean, they have renovated the back room which has not been open to the public in years and now looks bright and fresh.
The staff were young, fun and friendly and drink prices were on par with others in the area. We didn't order food so cannot comment on that but the toilets were clean with soap and hand towels available in the gents.
The unplugged evening with Arivmia and Ivy King was fantastic I will definitely come to the next ones.
They seem to be moving in the right direction, hope they can shake the stigma from the earlier reviews.

Squid was excellent, thoroughly commended.
Steep climb uphill, commanding views.
Excellent squid.

Visited September 2011 Evening

Utterly filthy place, the outside windows and doors have not been cleaned for many a moon it looks like. Barman was ace, though, friendly and knowledable about where we could go for a decent drink in comfort! 3/10

The staff are untrained, uninterested idiots and the place is filthy. Probably , Hastings' worst pub - and that's saying something!

Verry poor pub on the front - unhygienic, badly managed and awful staff. In need of massive investment, which never comes. Just avoid this foul outlet.

I must say I am confused if this is a gay pub but saw mixed sex couples together so went on inside. I have to say I had the most wonderful roast dinner (carvery) the roast Gammon was very tasty and loaded my plate with a vast choice of vegetables and accompliments, the chef was camp and very friendly as were all the staff and they had obviiously all been working hard serving customers before I arrived as they were stocking up the carvery but the service was still very friendly. There was a piano being played in the other room where the drunk people were and it gave it a certain charismatic feel, and could relate to the Harry Potter comment as it felt almost like it was a scene from Oliver Twist (pub scene), with the cosmo mix of clientelle. I would recommend this pub to anyone going down that way, as I enjoyed the food and friendly service.

This pub has been closed now for about 3 months

Agree with previous post. The RA is a good example of what can happen to a pub with a succession of bad managers, over a number of years - with no capital investment or even a maintenance budget. A fine site - for what now really is a non-pub.

Put simply, an awful pub. Dirty, bored staff and worn out decor/fittings. Pity - its on the seafront and, also, backs on the fast improving and historic George Street; thus, great potential. Again, it has new management; but unless they are outstanding, I fear for the future of this pub which has lost its soul.

Interesting wood panelled interior, but seemed very grimy and uncared for. Beer OK though, Harveys bitter was good, Bass on hand pump also.

Six months ago I said I wouldn't be going back. Well, I did. What is it with this place?
It could be good - it's got half way decent decor, and three ales on. But when I'm playing tourist in Hastings in the mid afternoon there is never anyone in this place. That's not "not many people", that's no one at all. Not a single soul.

If you are a fan of Harry Potter then this is the pub for you!!!

I felt like I was in a Harry Potter movie. Very dark and dingy place.

I think there were a few wizards and witches in one corner? I could have been wrong though.

Best avoided.

It was grim when I was a teenager in Hastings, and now twenty five years later, it's worse. I visited it out of a sense of nostalgia, but won't be going back.

Visited this place on the occasions I've stayed with friends in Hastings. Friday and Saturday nights are karaoke, so be prepared for extremely loud music for much of the night! It's full of the usual Hastings clientele - men who can't hold their drink and women who only wear just enough clothes to prevent them being nicked for indecent exposure. Still, everyone's there to have fun, and I haven't failed to go home happy yet.
