A St Austell house.

Right on the quayside, the location of which couldn't be better. Divided into two areas, one a bar area and the other more of a restaurant, all very 'olde worlde' with low ceilings.
The food looked pretty good and seemed to be quite a few people eating.....but it was the Easter holiday, as virtually every house in the place is a holiday let. Not a particularly warm welcome as the kitchen seem to shut at 2.20 and not the 2.30 advertised.....why would you want to take money off punters......sometimes I despair of the work/business ethic in Cornwall.

Beers in good condition, but as is anything to do with Fowey, the price for the same product is more expensive than another St Austell pub elsewhere.

We decided to miss a couple of ferries back to Fowey as we wanted to try both pubs in the village after doing the Hall Walk. Up the steps and into the Lugger which is a pleasant enough bar with a restaurant area at one end. Not many people in but as I've said before this is well out of season and most pubs were quiet (waiting for the Christmas rush apparently). We decided to eat here and ordered a mix of starters which were excellent - many being home-made. We tried the nachos; prawn cocktail; pate and olives with bread - just what we needed as a substantial snack and all very good indeed. Nicely presented and went well with our beers (St.Austell ales). Chatty landlord and overall we enjoyed our short visit. You can time the ferry from the bar window so I managed to squeeze in that final extra half pint! On a different note - the local 481 bus goes from Polruan to Polperro and Looe - this is well worth the journey as it serves the local community and whisks its way down some narrow Cornish lanes often at what seemed like breakneck speeds but all very invigorating!!

My dear laughingduck I am the landlord of the Lugger Inn. I can assure you that I did not write the comment below. It is true that my wife & I have just taken over the lugger but if you would care to take the time to read the comments from our last pub (The Russell Inn Polruan) I think you'll find that we strive to offer the best service available and that our customers value what we offer. In a time when so many pubs are being shut down I find it quite sad that some people have nothing better to do with their time than trawl the internet and valued sites like B.I.T.E writing comments about things that they have little or no understanding of, if indeed you have so much spare time on your hands may i suggest you try running a pub it's only 16hrs a day 7 days a week it may keep you out of mischief.I look forward to your expected rebuke.

The pub has changed hands in July and the new landlord is a chef! Unbelievably good value food, beautifully cooked but in great demand I would definitely say book ahead! Fantastic family are now running the place. Felt very welcomed and at home. Great selection of on tap beers, ales lager and ciders etc. Came over once before last year and had been massively underwhelmed but can't praise the place highly enough now.

Old unspoilt pub with decent good value beer. Didn't eat there though, probably just as well after reading some of the comments!

The comment below isn't too far off the mark... a quayside pub with an estate pub feel. The bar is lacklustre and the dining room looks like it has been tacked on and isn't in keeping with the rest of the place. I did play pool there, under the glare of an enormous flat screen TV. Decent pint of Tribute but probably won't return.

I also found the food appalling at the Lugger - what would you expect of 'cream of vegetable soup'? Thick, creamy, tasty? Not at the Lugger, it's thin, watery, tasteless.

Someone I spoke to in Fowey later said they would never eat there again, 'everything was grey'. Come to think of it, my soup was rather grey, too.

We would DEFINITELY eat in Polruan's other pub as the food was dreadful here.We also noted comments in the visitors book in the cottage we stayed in, and many other people seem to agree with us.
We also found the locals rather rude as other comments suggest!
Lovely old pub, but not a particularly nice atmosphere. Got glared at a couple of times by he landlord because we complained about the food. Not usually complainers, but it was really awful!!

Nice little pub, staff were pleasant enough. Had a pint of Tinners which was too cold by far and somewhat bland unfortunately for me. Dog and Child friendly.

Good selection of beers and cider and a great location. Food is usual pub stuff, fortunatley they had lemon sole on the specials which was very tasty. Served with bloody garnish and 'old' new potatoes. I'd go elsewhere to eat as there are plenty of other pubs in Fowey and Polruan

Perfectly good beer as might be expected in a tied house but the food offering looked distinctly "out of the freezer" ....it did have the advantage of being cheap tho'. Marvellous view of the estuary from outside the ladies..if you can push past the locals!

Like the previous reviewer we also spent a week in Polruan (last week). We used The Lugger a few times during the week, mainly for the superior location. The pub is positioned right on the Quay side. On our arrival we went for a quick drink here. It was lovely day weather wise and we wanted to drink outside. I was most disappointed to be told that I would have to have my drink in a plastic glass. Also St Austell beers available here; Tinners and Tribute. They also did not mind removing the sparkler. We visited one night thinking we might try their food. In the end our small group decided that we liked the Russell Inn far better. We took the shorter route just up the steps from the Lugger, less than a minutes walk away.

We had a week in Polruan back in july & enjoyed it so much that we decided to have another. During our first visit we ate & drank in the Russell inn which as i have allready said was excellent but this time we thought we would branch out & try the other pub BIG MISTAKE! this is a local pub for local people, The food was awful as was the beer & we were not made to feel welcome in any way. They may be very popular during the summer months due to location but once the season is over you've had it.

Nothing wrong here, better than anything on the other side of the river. Spot on St Austell, friendly staff, food OK. You do need to time your visit to avoid the crowds.

Just spent a week staying in the cottage owned by this pub, and plenty of evenings in the bar drinking & eating. A really warm friendly pub in a wonderful quayside location, that accomodates locals and tourists equally well. Excellent staff, good drinks and food. Also pleased to report that our table was always cleared promptly, so the previous reviewers comment seems to have been noted!
