This place is now a Slug & Lettuce. I don't think I've ever been in a decent pub from this chain. The one in Leicester is probably closest to average. This branch has no real ales at all. The keg selection was Peroni, Thatchers Gold, Guinness, Amstel, Estrella Damm, Hop House 13 Lager, Rekorderlig Strawberry & Lime, Westons Mortimers Orchard, Meantime London Pale & Heineken. At £5.10 a pint, I wasn't about to stick around for a session. The gents toilets were one of the worst I've ever seen. You had to literally wade through whatever was on the floor to do your business. The barman that had served me had just come out of there when I entered. I'm surprised he hadn't closed them until they were cleaned. Appalling.

Not many people in but a queue to get served - might be acceptable if you are eating here (is the food that good?) but not for someone who wants apinton a hot day - couldn't be bothered and went elsewhere.

just been for the weekend at the races, pub was ok but was disgusted, and i mean disgusted at the state of the toilets, for the amount of money that gets spent behind the bar the manager really needs to get their act together as wont go there again until its sorted ,in fact i am going to report it as its so bad!!!!

From the signange this venue looks like it caters for the football/lager crowd but inside it is a smart looking pub. Surprised and pleased to see West Berkshire beers on tap and my pint was very good. Staff were pleasant enough although they need better training and some decent management. Food is mediocre but a nice canal-side location and would go again if only for the beer.

I enjoyed a nice pint of West Berkshire brewery's "Good Old Boy" for 1.95 a pint (Monday lunchtime). A couple of pleasant young ladies behind the bar; nice views over the canal; TV screens for sport and music (only one had the sound on). Food available most times of the days with special offers (a lot of pubs these days seem to be doing the Wetherspoons thing - cheap beer and food in huge pubs).
Anyway the Hogs Head (used to be The Hogshead!!!) is worth a visit but when the new Wetherspoons opens next door (The Hatchet Inn) we will see what the competition brings!!

Following the CAMRA book of pub crawls and this is stop one. Huge pub. Very quiet at 7pm on a Monday. Nice earing in the barstaff. They really suited him. London Pride was very, very good pint. Sat and read looking out over the river. Nice pub.

OK Pub. Food is very cheap but it is low value ping (microwave) grub. Drinks are reasonably priced but service here is poor.
I've never known the toilets be in good shape. They always overflow. On the weekend one bargirl 'hattie' signed to show she had checked the loos, then only looked in one cubicle.
All the barmaids are very pretty- all blonde and thin but there seems to be a lack of customer service training, or at least a chat on how to smile. You also witness far too much standing around and talking which is really fucking annoying.

Pretty busy pub yesterday afternoon. Reasonably priced (Pride was only 2.80) food and drink. The staff could do with some training and/or management. 3 people behind the bar and 2 people to serve but it seemed to take all 3 of them to do 1 customer! And the pints needed a top up - admittedly done without comment when requested but it shouldn't be necassary to ask.

Very large pub over one floor, feat big "L shaped" bar.Plenty of comfy seating areas and sofas mainly aimed at groups, plus lovely river views from the rear.8/10

Usually go to Reading for a night out but we didn't make it that far! This place was good. Fit barmaids too. One of the busier places we went to

went in the other friday and was told i needed to smarten myself up before entry. this was 3pm for chuffs sake! despite my distressed jeans being matalan's finest i felt i brushed up pretty nice. one of the staff said something about me teeth. unprofessional staff and when the darts isn't on the garlic bread crowd are roaming wide-eyed and lary. aye.

Walked in to this pub at 12.05 today. Four people sat at a table and 1 person stood waiting at the bar. My wife walked off to use the loo. I stood at the bar. The barman was busy walking up and down making coffee from one of those big machines. It looked like he was on 3 of the 4 he was making. My wife returned from the loo. We looked out of the window at the canal. We waited. He made coffee. We waited. We left! No acknowledgement. No "Good afternoon, be with you in a couple of minutes". Nothing. Well if you can't be bothered to speak to me in six minutes that I am stood 6feet away from you then I can't be bothered to spend my hard earned cash with you!
About six real ale hand pumps - only London Pride on! No idea what it was like though.... I wonder if he has made those coffees yet?

There really can be a lot of knb-head Arsenal / Chelsea fans in here. Plus real ales often poorly kept / bland choices.

Said by some to have the slowest bar service in town.

Usual national-chain pub full of chavs and cretins. Beer is ok though, food is standard big-chain pub microwave meals.

Great pub,the service was fantastic.Enjoyed the food , shame there isn't a wider choice of Real Ale but lots of lagers-if that's your thing! Didn't see any of the chavs others whinge about but not seen this place on a weekend night. (probably like any other pub that people actually want to go to you won't escape the Chavs.)

Great pub! Just on the market square. Can get very busy most evenings. If you love sport then you wil love it here. Not to many chavs contary to previous reviews. Good service, Good beer, has Peroni on Draught defo a bonus point. Good music at what i would say is the correct level. Food is what you would expect from a Pubco!

Truly awful. Thumping music, chavvy customers looking for a fight, rotten beer and food.

Used to be alright until they ripped out all the real ale and put in a pool table and lots of tvs.
Avoid, but especially when there's football on.

Probably the most popular pub in Newbury as if thats a recommendation. Its not. Expensive and over populated with the check shirt brigade.
Trapdoor - 26 Jan 2006 21:43
Too loud for my liking a pub trying to be a nighclub at weekends
chrisgee - 29 Nov 2005 16:42
Fantastic I cannot wait!
RockerPete - 15 Dec 2004 21:51
Best pub in Newbury...Soon to have a late license which makes a welcome to the local nightclub- Liquid, which is an utter dive
