Nobody wants to pay £17 for and bottle of wine and sit in a cold pub.

Which is of course exactly what happened to us.

Should have stayed at home.

Totally agree with the last comment. We seemed to be interupting his chat with his mates at the bar. Funny regime for a pub with very close competition (3 other pubs within 30 yards!).

A standard local pub.

One bar pub with a few nooks and crannies off it. A St Austell house with their usual range of beers, my pint of Tribute was in good condition.

The only downside on my visit was the young chap behind the bar could do with a 'customer service' course, no please, thank you or kiss my a*rse. With service like that I will not rush back given that the outstanding 'Star' is around the corner.

Agree with all of gwiwer's comments (after six years !). Sorry paulhrh123 had a bad experience, we found the landlady pleasant and welcoming.

Although the beer and food was OK, I found the landlady to be very rude. I sat at the only unreserved table early one evening. Part of the way through my meal, the landlady came over and put a "reserved" sign on the table and told me the table was reserved for others. I said is wasn't reserved when I sat there and she said "well it is now" and walked off. Needless to say, I shall not be returning again.

Feast weekend was brilliant. Food beer and company well worth the 5 hour train journey from London. Bar staff alert and welcoming. The atmosphere felt like a family party or wedding. Top place!

this is a great little boozer.cool place to sit and have a few pints outside in the square.scrumpy jack on tap is worth popping in for alone !the food here is excellent(the cheddar ploughmans and the steaks are great value for money, and i have it on good authority that the cottage pies not bad) i've been coming here for years and hope to keep doing so!!!!

One of several St. Austell brewery pubs clustered around the town square. Typical west Cornwall pub, low doors / roof, all original or sympathetically updated interior. Range of real ales, kept well though not quite as sparkling as it's neighbour The Star. Surprisingly extensive and affordable menu with gargantuan portions. Popular with locals and visitors alike, the small bar can get quite busy. Arrive early to be sure of a table if you're eating. Good local bus service to / from surrounding towns - no need to drink drive.
