user reviews of Ring 'O' Bells, West Kirby

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

This pub was bought by Stange & Co Ltd a few months ago. Their other pubs on Wirral, the Jug & Bottle, Fox & Hounds and the Ship Inn are excellent for both food and ale. I hope the company survives the coronavirus shutdown and that they make a success of the Ring O' Bells.

Undergoing major refurbishment - and expected to be reopened in the autumn.

Took us a while to visit this place for the first time, but now we have we'll be back a few more times methinks. It's a very smart looking place on three levels with plenty of seating. There is also a large garden. Food seems a big thing, and a lot of folk on our visit were eating the usual pub meals.

But the beer is very good and from the Green King range, though they do have a bespoke bitter on brewed for the pub. The IPA dispenser has the 'switch' which enables your pint to be poured in the 'southern' or 'northern' tradition - that is with the creamy head or not. As a northerner who spent too long in the south, I like my ale served in the southern style now and so this is a good thing.

Well worth a visit.

Only two minutes from the Moby Dick so worth a visit. Family friendly, relaxing and a little peculiar, which is not a bad thing in a pub. It has plenty of cask and other beers to satisfy all tastes. Exellent toilets. Seems to be a popular eatery. My three pints went down too quickly, that's my only complaint.

This has now reverted back from Lock Fyne to Ring o'Bells - Happy Days. From the minute you walk through the door to the time you leave the staff are fantastic. The menu is varied and reasonably priced, the food great. Fab choice of cask ales particularly the 'Abbott'. Will definitely be back again.

I went to this pub as I was celebrating my birthday. I had been to Loch Fyne and the food was excellent. NOT THE CASE ANYMORE. It was atrocious. I ordered fish soup - clearly watered down, the mains were not up to weatherspoons standards. I paid 9.00 for a lousy fish pie with no garnish and around 10.00 for scampi and chips. I thought I was in for a treat as I had with loch fyne but instead I got oven chips, deep fried scampi and about ten peas. the laughable thing was it was served in a big pretentious over sized plate! DONT GO ITS A TOTAL RIP OFF! WHEN I EXPRESSED MY DISAPOINTMENT THE MANAGER LET THE YOUNG WAITER DEAL WITH IT - NO SIGN OF HIM. UTTER RUBBISH SAVE YOUR MONEY AND GO TO THE CHIPY!

Just heard that this pub has now changed to "Loch Fyne at the Ring O'Bells" and popped my head around the door whilst in the area to verify this. It has changed and has been done out very nicely. I would even consider going for a meal here, sometime soon, especially with seafood tapas on the menu.
I thought it only fair to mention this after my last (negative) review as it has obviously changed for the better. However, sadly, this is now very definitly more of a restaurant and not a pub any longer.

Tried this pub as it always looked so interesting from outside. What a disappointment. Made the decision to only order a half on the way to the bar. Totally given over to food, smelt of stale chip pan fat, thanks to the no smoking policy. The beer was chilled and nearly poured over a child running round the corner of the bar. More like a creche at about 8p.m. with childrens toys, shoes etc. all over the floor and children running from room to room bumping into waiters, parents totally oblivious. Left never to return. Still it suits some people if thats what you like.

Today, my companion and I had lunch at the RoB - it was dire.

My companion had the Surf & Turf, which generated a debate as to how much should be charged (despite the specials board being about three feet from the till), but which was mostly OK when it arrived, and I had the "Beer-battered cod, chips & peas" which, mostly, wasn't.

The fish was OK, decently cooked, but the batter was a stranger to beer, and the thing had probably been frozen - though I can't be sure (if the batter was freshly made, the culprit should be fired without delay!). However,my peas, clearly frozen, had barely been shown to boiling water, and were inedible, and the chips, in both cases, were an absolute disgrace - they had all the charm of chip-shop leftovers - I was surprised that they weren't wrapped in newsaper. At 20 for 2, drinks extra - this is simply not acceptable, on any level.

When a member of the staff was reckless enough to ask "Everything all right?", we gave them chapter and verse as to why it WASN'T all right! All this got us was a baffled look.

Throughout the meal, we were assailed by a battery of dropped trays - not accidental, just too idel to put them down - and a cacophony of bangs and crashes from behind the bar.

As before, the beer was superb, and the house wine was fine - but when it comes to serving food, these people would disgrace a soup-kitchen.

I checked this pub out at lunchtime, to see if this non-smoking venue was suitable to take a date. The beer (Greene King IPA), was in excellent condition, the food expensive but, as there was no incentive to linger, I didn't dine. Why? Because the staff are appalling. If there's one thing I don't want in a pub, it's the staff holding shouted conversations with each other across the large bar, and even from room to room. It's quite unacceptable, and customers behaving like this would surely be shown the door. The staff should be too.

In the hope that this was an aberration, I haven't rated it and will try it again at a later date.

1968, interior gutted and all cosy & intimate rooms / snugs / bars etc knocked into one. Original 500 year old beams removed and replaced with fibreglass clad concrete with identical 'knots' every 20". Piece de resistance; a floodlit plastic spinning wheel placed centrally. Progress i'm told. Beer now fairly standard but garden a sort of redeeming feature. Food standardised boil-in-the-bag grade. Bread rolls good, microwaved by their 'chef' daily.

I believe this was the first non smoking pub on the Wirral which has made it very popular for families. Popular for meals as the food is fairly good (not eaten there for a few months though).
Has an area next to it with kids play area and picnic tables when it's nice.
