please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

A lovely location with this place, but like with so many places like this it's becomes too touristy and a total rip off.
Places like this are all the same in my view they think to them selves 'oh look we have a tourist trap now lets rip everyone one off and give poor customer service!'
Couldn't relax here feeling like a mindless tourist clone, still it's not aimed at a real pub goer like me is it!.

5/10 (Just for the view)

Popped in a couple of weeks past, had the chocolate bitter very nice indeed.
Staff and landlady still very pleasant and helpful. Sorry I couldn,t stop due to driving, but the summeres coming what a good reason to return..

went here on saturday last to see hoe it was doing after a year or so spell. i found the staff very helpfull and what appears to be a new landlady very pleasant indeed, nothing seemed to much trouble. drinks and food all passed very well indeed from our small party and we were given a cream tea although it was not the times specified on the menu. All in all a good experience.

Nice pub, lovely setting, pity about the food, which was overpriced and mediocre. I had a "chicken salsa" dish - tasteless slab of chicken completely over-smothered in salsa sauce, nestling on a bed of soggy chips. Other party members fared slightly better (although one of the eggs in ham eggs and chips arrived with a broken yolk) All in all - poor value for money.

I had the impression that this establishment trades on its fabulous location , to the detriment of quality.

We moved to Tiverton last year and on the drive down went past the Fishermans Cot, saying we must visit when we get a chance. I'm glad we did as it's one of the most stunning places I've ever been to. We went for our first anniversary dinner and were placed on a lovely table by one of the large windows overlooking the lake. The staff were polite, attentive and courteous (and I know about this stuff - I'm a bar manager!). They saw to our every need and made us feel really at home. The food and drink was reasonably priced, and was fantastic. None of this fancy pants restaurant style food, just fantastic, filling, traditional pub food - the type that's hard to come by now! And the desserts, not had better in a long time! In all, our night out was brilliant. We are now regular visitors to the Fishermans Cot (especially their superb sunday carvery), we recommend it to any visiting friends, and take anyone who stays with us there for lunch / dinner!
Polite staff, great food, great price, FAB location - what more do you want in a pub?!

Charming riverside pub let down by rather charmless management & staff

Stayed here again recently...nothing changed, must agree with sabu 1, the carvery is good but if you fancy anything else, try the Trout just down the road for good home cooked nosh.

I am bewildered by some of the recent comments about this great pub. I ate there only last night with 7 others. The location is second to none ! The staff are all hard working, courteous and 'on the ball'. The food was very good, not cordon blue, but good nonetheless. Most of us had the carvery roast(every night, 6-9!), so much food! I couldn't eat all mine, and all for 8.45. We ordered drinks while at the table, and did not have to wait long. Remember people, be patient! The girls here were working their socks off.

If your ever in this part of Devon, do yourself and family a favour, drive to Bickleigh and give your self a treat. Oh and the drive from Exeter through Stoke Canon and Rewe is a delight!

They tell me that Paul Simon wrote a famous song while staying here.
"Keeping the customer satisfied"?
I don't think so

A typical chain pub I'm afraid. Drove by and saw a beautifu pub on the banks of a river. Nice seating area outside and thought we'd stop for a drink. Took over 5 minutes to get served and then the bar maid barely spoke english. Eventually got our drinks (and very expensie they were too) but then couldn't sit and enjoy them as there was no fencing along the side of the river just a bare stone wall and a drop to the river below - VERY DANGEROUS. Spent the whole time worrying my two young children might fall in. Didn't eat as I refuse to pay nearly 10 for Scampi and Chips. The food I did see didn't look that great and a lot of people were complaining about the wait. Got back in the car to continue our journey when 30 seconds down the road we came to The Trout Inn. Huge enclosed beer garden, children's play area, bouncey castle and SAFE so no worries about the children. Had a great meal and a great price. We will be back there again!!

Can't say I was impressed with the standards of service. If I'm paying 50 for dinner for two, I don't expect to have to get up half way through my dinner in order to go to the bar to get my girfriend another glass of wine, or go to the bar at the end in order to pay. There were lots of staff wandering around, but none seemed willing to take orders or fetch drinks. Perhaps they should consider getting in some Polish or Czech staff to show how things should be done.

Second visit, what can I say, just as good as last month although somewhat quieter. This really is a good place to stay as it brings North and South Devon within easy reach if you're touring. "Mine Host" Warren is a nice friendly guy.....shame about his taste in bacon. Awe c'mon, get some unsmoked bacon, it's much better than that Kipper tasting smoked stuff.

ps. The missus say's thanks for the extra pillow.

The Fishermans Cot has got to be in my top 10 of best pubs in the UK! I luvvit here!! On a sunny afternoon you'd be hard pushed to find a better venue in Devon..(unless you know better..?)!!
I didn't test the food menu, but nearby tables the food looked & smelt good. Its a big pub inside, you could get lost! The carvery counter looked apetising! The loos were new & clean (always a good sign)! I found staff helpful, and there were sufficient of them. Did i mention the view outside..? The old stone bridge over the wier/type ford/falls with gushing river is breath-taking, and easy-on-the-ear too! We watched a gull patiently fish in the river for 20mins or longer! You don't get pubs like this in London..! If i was local 'KCurtis' i would be down the 'FC' every day, whether the meat was curled at the edge or not. Its a great place! One to mark in your diary & tell all your friends about! We loved it here! TJ

Stayed here recently, I was really impressed with the attitude of the staff, friendly and nothing was too much trouble and room was nice. It really is a nice setting, at it's best at first light, with the mist rising off the river as you lounge in the garden supping a room brewed tea or coffee. We're going back in September.

Stayed in the fishermans cot twice have friends who live in Bickleigh. Beautiful rooms on both occasions oak beamed, views of the river, tea making facilities.
Falling to sleep to the sounds of the river flowing is extremely relaxing. Food was good, breakfast quite substantial. Had a carvery meal one night also good food, Beer okay, prices not to bad. Beer garden excellent. watch the children near the river no fence. The new gazebo'd areas quite a quaint idea although does spoil the view. Also lots of mossies, but what do you expect by a river. Would go back and stay again.

had the worst sunday carvery of my life here in summer. everything was cooked well in advance and kept warm under lights subsequently turning everything to rock! i paid 10 per serving and was seated between 2 wedding parties. i am local but will never go here again, despite the very beautiful setting. go to the other pubs in walking distance, the trout is good.
kcurtis - 10 Feb 2006 19:07
More restaurant than pub.
Falken - 28 Mar 2005 18:09
Excellent food, though portion sizes were varied.
2 or 3 different ales, excellent view if you get to sit looking out over the water and bridge.
Service was a bit slow but it was Easter Sunday.
Falken - 28 Mar 2005 18:08
It's a great urban myth though. Apparently it is documented that he stayed there in the 1960's, and it is by a bridge, and the water is sometimes rather troubled
theory900 - 24 Mar 2005 16:14
Paul Simon did write Bridge over troubled water there and the loch ness monster is real and the moon is made of smoked tofu !!
exregular - 24 Mar 2005 15:24
Gastro pub, good food, great view, recently changed hands, heaps better than before. Paul Simon wrote Bridge Over Troubled Waters there.
