user reviews of the Plough, Clapham Junction

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

This is now a rather nice place called 'The Plough Bar & Kitchen' and bears no similarity to the old Plough which used to be on the same site. Nice pint of Winter Warmer, friendly staff too.

Ah! I notice that they've embraced reality and their website now acknowledges that the pub is in Battersea and not Clapham. Not so far to walk for a pint of Young's now, although friends advise me not to bother in this case. Although pricey, the Ship (SW18) is more enticing.

They're certainly ignorant of the local geography. Bar's website still describes the premises as being in Clapham, which is all of two miles away, has SW4 postcode and is in Lambeth borough. I live a stone's throw away but "Clapham" is too far to go to a pub that can be noisy, is overpriced and employs bouncers (sorry, admission consultants) as if anticipating/inviting trouble. Young's beer may retain its good reputation but the company's pubs are nowadays not what they used to be, sadly.

There are many good pubs around Clapham Junction and along St Johns Hill, this is not one of them.

Yep, plenty of bar shills out there; all of them giving themselves away with the only-one-bumsucking-post posted-the-day they-joined riff.

Keep exposing them! I do.

Well done to the manager/member of barstaff who posted that very eloquent review previous to mine. Interestingly this person has only ever reviewed this pub and none others. In addition to this the comment "Black pudding scotch egg - oh my lord " made me crack up. Who actually talks like that???

What a complete tit this person is! ! ! Lol

I absolutely love the newly opened Plough. So close to Clapham Junction and yet far enough to discourage the riff-raffington-Stella-drinking crowds.

Myself and two friends went on Saturday lunchtime around 1:30 and the place was pretty full with families, groups of friends, couples and the odd person just chilling out reading the dailies. Overall the vibe was relaxed and whilst still attracting some RAH-types, not pretentious in the slightest.

Meantime Ale is fantastic. That, happily, is just one of the many hand-picked tipples on offer. We got served straight away and ushered to a table in the mixer with views of the open kitchen and the myriad of Clapham life passing the huge floor-to-ceiling windows.

Now the food was equally exceptional. Black pudding scotch egg - oh my lord - and the burgers? Huge. Also took down some Parrot wings, which are not to be taken lightly, they have a spice that will kick your ass if youre not prepared.
On balance, the prices are not expensive for what you get. There are plenty of pubs out there charging the same/more for food of a lesser standard.

Will definately be back and good work on bringing the Plough back to life.

Shame to see some negative reviews.. But I guess haters gonna hate.

I would love to be able to review The Plough however they claim to be so busy that they are able to afford to turn away business. A girlfriend and I planned on visiting for Sunday lunch last weekend and so called in advance to book. On calling we were told that they only took bookings for groups of 8 or more but as we were only 2, we would have, and I quote 'absolutely no trouble' finding a table.

So, we duly turned up and we were indeed impressed with the newly refurbished surroundings. There were plenty of smaller tables unoccupied and so we approached the bar to purchase drinks before settling in. On asking for a food menu whilst at the bar, we were greeted with a look of horror. Two people wanting food as opposed to eight?! We were then greeted by another chap clutching a clipboard who told us we would have to wait an hour and a half for a table...but what was happening with all of the empty ones?! He had various names written on his clipboarded list but there was no-one unseated within the bar and/or restaurant area and no-one appeared to be waiting and - as we already knew - no-one could book unless they were a group of eight. Utterly baffled by the whole scenario we turned on our heels and left. We walked ten minutes down the road to The Establishment on Battersea Rise which really was fit to burst on the restaurant side. Rather than turning us away, however, the fantastic staff offered us a seat in the bar and chose to bend the rules and serve us food in there - now THAT is service.

It's truly disappointing that our visit to The Plough didn't work out, particularly as the sister of the friend I was with had previously written a rave review on a well known site which was the whole purpose of us going. I'm afraid to say, we won't bother returning...unless of course we are a group of 8!

Smartly inoffensive but predictable modern fit-out spoiled by frankly criminal pricing - 4.80 and 5 a pint for lager.

Food not bad, but, again, 25% too expensive for where it is (13.50 for a burger and chips is pushing it in these environs).

I'm sure it will do well.

Its being bulldozed and rebuilt as a trendy bar with flats on top.
afcgazzard - 15 Sep 2007 12:00
Boarded up (as previous posters has already pointed out).
Gone for good? Maybe...
Luxury flats anyone?

CLOSED AND BOARDED UP AGAIN - I walked past last Friday
JohnBonser - 9 Jul 2007 10:38
The Plough isn't closed anymore. It is under new management, two irish governors have taken over the pub around two months ago. The pub doesn't seem to be as bad as everybody says in here. Many locals are back in there and they seem to enjoy themselves. As well as the locals, younger people are going there as a Brazilian Rock Bar was opened in the back garden of The Plough a couple of weeks ago. Well, just going there to have a look and check how bad or how good the pub is now.

A new planning application for 14 flats, 1 house, and a bar/restuarant (Youngs) has been lodged.
ianbeer - 25 Jan 2007 19:06
The pub is currently closed. Apparently there was a serious incident (on Christmas Eve?) in which the interior was badly damaged.
ianbeer - 12 Jan 2007 18:33
This is still a Youngs House. They have been trying to redevelop the site. As far as I know all the proposals, so far, have been rejected by Wandsworth Councils planners.

This one of the very few pubs which could make me spend an evening at home. I don't want to publicly describe what this place is like.
ianbeer - 30 Dec 2006 17:59
JohnBonser: yes, it is, ghastly. Though Bola says it is no longer a Young's house, I sat there with a pint of Ordinary wondering if this is the worst Young's pub there is. The Ordinary was actually not that bad but there was no sign of any kind of alternative to it; curiously that might have given the game away, as there was no Charles Wells Bombardier to be seen! Like the Queen Elizabeth in Fulham, it is no longer Young's but has the signs of that proud brewery (well, now part of Wells and Youngs) outside. Chipboardy and vile.

It's always been a 'locals' pub and with all the other pubs around here that is a good thing. Nice ordinary last time I was here. A few dodgy geezers too. I won't be going back in a hurry but I wouldn't like it to have leather sofas and the like! Actually, i couldn't give a monkeys!
mitomighty - 13 Oct 2006 22:46
Sweet Jesus, if this establishment is now under new management then one could only cringe and imagine what it was like before the BBC arrived and transformed it into Tenko2 the sequel.
The decor is circa 1970 and not retro believe me,i looked around before ordering and thought it wise to have a pint of Guinness, well thats not entirely true, it would of been wiser to sound retreat and withdraw from this incarceration and re-group on higher ground..!
The Guinness duly arrived and i maneuvered my way past most of the old rickety chairs and stools and attempted to place my posterior on the green draylon covered bench seat, which incidentally was all torn, but i have to say, expertly repaired with long strips of black gaffa tape,at this point the seat began to eat me! i sank down to my tits, and must of looked like the bear with the cushion and the glasses with the protruding teeth on that comedy show?.

The black of my Guinness by this time must of had an argument with the white of the head and duly made its excuses and disappeared before my very eyes!.

After extracting my ass from the seat i decided to regain composure and make my exit via the toilets,i truly should not have bothered, the last guy to use the cubicle must of attempted to wipe his ass with a Fly-mo, i re-adjusted my clothes and with my head held low made my way back through the bar, just intime to see a barfly finishing off my Guinness minus its head!.

Now proudly proclaiming itself as "under new management". The pint of Ordinary that I had yesterday was spot on.

Yes, it's not one of Youngs best pubs and it won't be everybody's cup of tea - but it's a down to earth old fashioned boozer and not the "ghastly place" that the previous contributor makes out.
JohnBonser - 28 Apr 2006 11:58
Come friendly bombs and fall on the Plough!
It isn't fit for humans now,
There isn't beer to drink right now.
Swarm over, Death!

Ghastly, ghastly place. Never the jewel in Young's crown, it is now possibly the worst of their houses I've ever been in. No Special on, so had an Ordinary. Undrinkable, vile and bearing a curious resemblance to sewage floating in the Wandle.

Avoid like the plague. When's it being closed?

Well, looks like I have got the honour of being the first person to post a comment on this pub.
Very much a locals pub, but not hostile or unwelcoming.
Its a 60's style building - very similar to the soon to be doomed Charlie Butler in Mortlake.
The yuppie bars and restaurants of Wandsworth start only a few hundred yards away down the road, but this pub is as far removed from them as you could get.
Worth a visit - if like me if you like proper old fashioned basic no frills pubs.
