user reviews of the Three Fishes, Sunbury on Thames

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

The Three Fishes is a very old Tudor pub located in Sunbury-Upon-Thames, near Hampton Court, Middlesex. I am sad to post a comment about this one delightful inn, as The Three Fishes used to be my long time local pub, that had a very pleasent atmosphere, (especially on a Sunday afternoon when a group of Irish gentalmen would have a triditional sing song that I used partake in) but it has been taken over by a couple of mediterranean foreigners with a lack of understanding!

The Three Fishes have employed a female bar staff member, which I hate to have to say has petty intellectual impedance, and as a result is not able to understand peoples request. When a requests has been gotten wrong and asked to correct, she can become very insecure and abrasive.

This unfortunatly happened to me. After her getting my request for the order of a pint of 50/50 larger lemonade shandy wrong (recieving ratio 3/4 lemonade, 1/4 Larger), she demanded payment of the 50/50 ratio. I offered to do so on recieving it. I was looked at with horror and fear and she shouted to the licensee that I was not going to be paying for my drink. Influenceing the licensee to believe I was not going to be doing so, he became very unpleasant applying his nose to mine very threatengly and tell me to get out of the pub! Unfortunately, I've been told never to return!

If you are intending to vist The Three Fishes I strongly suggest that your english is very clear and that you double check that requested orders are understood.

Had a meal in there this evening, spur of the moment decision, but SO recommended! (to back up comment from 'mim', my boyfriend also likes his steak rare and was not disappointed!)
Have visited this pub before and enjoyed it, but needed to say how impressed with the food side of things I was, well done!
lodemai85 - 5 May 2011 00:04
more new pub owners, and they are also giving the 3 fishes a very good go. The refit is excellent. Haven't tried the food. Jukebox and quiz machine are very good. I hope they succeed, loads of competition around Sunbury, but I like this pub.
TheGP - 26 Dec 2010 19:36
Well I have never been in this pub before, nor did I know who runs it and I can only say (I logged in especially to do so) I now know where to go locally for a good reasonably priced (9.95) steak with French fries and peppercorn sauce, also hand made pizzas, and the pasta looked good. I like my steak rare and am always wary of disappointment, but the Italian owner/chef does it Continental style and the Rib Eye (9 oz.) was as tender as a Fillet Mignon. Topped generously with peppercorn sauce: delicious. There were only two real ales on (Ruddles and Youngs) but they were in good condition. The live music (friday) wasn't too loud and you could still talk. I will be back for another steak and a pint for sure. This was an unexpected pleasant surprise find tonight, and almost on our doorstep. Good luck to the new chef owners, but please keep it a real ale pub.

that last comment sounds suspiciously like a member of staff.

the refit has improved the place though - first impressions very good,

All those bad comments about the Pub should be removed. The Place is now under New Management and is looking great. They closed the Pub for 2 month and it has just been open since 25th oct 2010. It's absolutely Spotless, very very nice indeed. Nice Beer, Clean Toilets, music on the backgroung, nice people, new Decor and Best News ever..Will have Food available soon..
At last someone with passion for the Business and the place has taken over and they are doing a Fab. JOB....Well done
tatifla - 30 Oct 2010 18:19
Has been closed for some time, although a banner stating "under new management" is displayed outside...
robhealy - 15 Oct 2010 00:00
I can understand why people don't like the 3 Fishes, but I find it strangely calming.
The beer can sometimes be excellent, and it is a good location. Also has an excellent jukebox.

Just don't sit on the bar near the toilets, it stinks.
TheGP - 29 Jun 2010 13:18
Bar was pretty empty for a Saturday night, so no queue however staff seemed uninterested in the customers. Strongbow was served warm and flat, and glassware not entirely clean, would probably be best to stick with packaged products if you get dragged in.

Decor is pretty shabby / sticky and could do with freshening up, especially the toilets which are disgusting.

I'll be steering clear, plenty of nicer pubs nearby where you'll get a nicer pint and a better atmosphere.

4065 - 30 May 2010 13:47
Dreadful ... very grumpy staff ... uninspiring beer selection which tasted watered down to me ... Could be great as it is a small atmospheric place but needs to get back to the basics
bishopgrog - 9 Apr 2010 21:55
Sorry to say I was not very keen on this pub at all. This pub could do with smoking being re introduced as it smelt of "wet dog"!! Found it very hard to muster a word or a smile from the man serving, not even a simple thankyou. No wonder it was so empty for a Saturday night. Shame!
lucy75 - 14 Nov 2009 16:50
Still a Dump !!!
Samuel38 - 8 Oct 2009 07:10
if you get served by the eastern european guy behind the bar, that is just his manner with everyone - he is quite abrupt

I can understand why people would find it a bit "local" - but it's ok really
TheGP - 15 May 2009 20:50
Bar staff rude, unless you are a regular - you certainly get the impression you are not welcome. Shame!
Rich1977 - 23 Dec 2008 17:14
The pub is not very friendly.
Samuel38 - 4 Dec 2008 17:19
bring back the quiz machine!
TheGP - 4 Aug 2008 20:00
This pub is seriously in need of updating. Now that the Pheonix has been revamped it is putting the fishes in the shade with it's shabby decor. They could also do with taking cards behind the bar as the cash machine is never working !!!!!. Apart from that it is a friendly local boozer.
fishydrinker - 24 Jul 2008 15:36
Popped in the ol' 3Fishes the other night for a quick pint and to watch the footy. Only trouble is, they don't have Sky Tv anymore..!! GP you're right, they do have different staff every time i go in there, but they've always seemed helpful & efficient to me. I may return, if the Sky licence returns... otherwise i'll be in The Flowerpot. (i have increased my rating for the 3F's to 6/10 for friendly bar staff)! TJ
TeeJay - 31 Jan 2008 11:25
I can assure the earlier poster that I go to this pub and am not related to any of the other customers and/or staff!

I admit to being baffled by the staff turnover as there seems to be someone different behind the bar every time I go in, but the pub seems OK to me!
TheGP - 4 Nov 2007 08:43
New manager now and ........... hes sober!!

watch this space.....
rachelmaywheeler - 20 Aug 2007 13:07
actually thats not the owner and not ALL the staff are rude!
did you not read the review below yours?!!!!!!!!!!

Oh and our customers are lovely, and to make comments about people you dont know is just not on!

Any way we are goin through a quiet spell atm, stuff happens!

We have a lovely old pub there with ok a few choices behind the bar I wouldnt have made (managment an staff wise) but it is a lovely pub and the locals are all lovely, related to one anothers cousins-honestly?? an despite the quiet spell we are goin through atm it is still a pleasure to work there!

rachelmaywheeler - 8 Jun 2007 11:32
Oh my good god this pub should be bull dozed down and everyone that drinks in it. A proper hell hole of a pub. The staff are rude, the owner is p1ssed and the regulars are all related to one and others cousins if you get my drift!
anonymous - 7 Jun 2007 13:00
The barmaid is fantastic. Congrats...
Pub_Inspector_2 - 19 May 2007 21:36
Nice pub, good to pop in before you get your fish and chips at the ace chippy next door, but try not to be put off by the chip frying man in that place insulting you because he does that to all his customers.
Back to the point, The pub is worth visiting, the staff are friendly and the atmosphere cool
anonymous - 19 Mar 2007 14:28
Only one good thing I can say at least hes got some regular entertainment down there now! Live music and karaoke!

Shame about the other stuff.
Least hes got a good team behind the bar-most of the time any way!

Oh we now sell pizza?
What ever!!
rachelmaywheeler - 1 Mar 2007 12:00
Nice little local, friendly down to earth nice to unwind.Do not feel uncomfortable even if you are the only female in the pub,
grumpy1 - 28 Jan 2007 13:54
Technically my local now, although I have been in here in passing a few times in the past, I have to say I quite liked it in here when I went in recently - Service was very friendly and I like the right hand side of the bar - it felt quite cosy.

So all in all, seems a good pub these days
TheGP - 7 Jan 2007 19:28
Ian Parker from the Hollies is coming to the fishes an wed 6th December from 8.

He was really good last time and obviously enjoyed himself as he's returning to our little pub.

See you there?
rachelmaywheeler - 27 Nov 2006 15:50
Everybody welcom Tom, Hes older and I think he will be good for the pub!

Good luck!
rachelmaywheeler - 7 Nov 2006 17:46
Sadly Duncans Leaving us. New manager starting Sunday!
Hope allgoes well in your new job Dunc!x
rachelmaywheeler - 3 Nov 2006 17:14
Actually its me that cant spell! Sorry Duncan!
rachelmaywheeler - 10 Oct 2006 22:49
Don't want to be picky Duncan, but 'accept' is very different from'except', but the sentiment is right!
zappa - 10 Oct 2006 13:01
Hi Im Duncan the new manager,Iv been managing pubs for eight years,an this is certainly not a rough pub.
It is just a traditional drinkers pub.

They except new people as they have excepted me as a new manager, all you have to do is join in and except the banter or have a quiet drink alone either is excepted.

Yes we've had teething problems which is often the case with new managers let alone new owners.

Duncan.

Hope to see you all soon and thankyou for all the nice comments made.
anonymous - 3 Oct 2006 00:21
The new owner has put a lot of money into the pub and it has made a massive difference. To anonymous on 23 Aug, Duncans a really nice guy!So what if he looks like a customer!? He fits in with ALL the locals and has made what could have been a very disrupting time for both customers and staff as easy as he could. Good luck to ya mate!!!

rachelmaywheeler - 19 Sep 2006 13:44
I just wanna say that was probably me being accused of being rude, to a new customer I can understand if you think I was being rude but the customer being "shouted at" would not have been offended. I am very polite to all customers and those who know me never take offence to my sense of humour and the banter local customers expect in a local pub.

Sorry for any offence caused!
rachelmaywheeler - 7 Sep 2006 12:34
I dont understand some of the bad comments on here, some people must be used to drinking tea at the Ritz or something. The Three Fishes is a proper little pub with weird and friendly characters that you would expect to find in an old local. I have visited a few times but more recently last week and found the refurb to the seats and carpet and a fresh lick of paint a pleasant surprise. We also had no rudeness from any member of staff in fact they were friendly and smiling which nowadays is a bonus in most places. Good luck to the new landlord.
lucy75 - 24 Aug 2006 07:04
First time in this pub recently and I found the staff to be very rude to customers. Some young girl behind the bar was particular rude to a lady who had missed heard the amount of money she wanted, she ended up shouting at the poor lady.
anonymous - 7 Aug 2006 17:32
Well said Rachel (who likes to drink regally at this bar..!) Nothing wrong with a bit of regal drinking!!
3 FISHES = very handy for the 216 or 555/7 bus routes. Ideal, stops right outside!
A mate took me along to the England v Sweden World Cup'06 match here on 20th June, for a bit of national flag-waving & a couple of pints! We had a good view of the game on a big screen, and the bar soon filled. There was NO trouble! I thought the customers were all well behaved. The only rowdiness was the barman blowing a hooter when England scored!! (I wish he'd blown it 3 times..! We would've beaten them Swedes!) My only moan was the bar filled with smoke & there was no ventillation, and every time I left a back door open for a bit of air in the place, someone else closed it again! Unless the vent problem is addressed properly, i'll probably use the Admiral Hawk, or the Grey Horse in Sunbury instead. (PS- what happened to the thugs with the bat! Were they caught?!) TJ
TeeJay - 1 Aug 2006 12:14
Just to clear a few things up...
I work behind the bar in the Three Fishes and have done pretty much for 4 years, and the manager who is running the pub now is the best one we've had for about 2 and a half yrs!!
Right, I was working the night that the isolated incident with the bat happened, and it was totally out of the ordinary. The man being atacked had only just started using the pub and since that night has not been in. It was broken up very quickly and as I said its unusual for that to happen in this local pub.
Since I have worked in the pub I have only witnessed two major incidents 1: A fight started by a huge gang of teenagers OUTSIDE the pub and 2: The incident with the bat and that is in 4 years. Obviously there are a few altercations now and then, but in a pub with such a huge mixture of ages and personalities you have to accept that. However, to call it a very very rough pub is a bit extreme.

Trust me there are rough pubs in Sunbury and The Three Fishes is not one of them. I suggest the people who posted the Anonymous comments open their eyes and try the rough pubs and then come back for a nice quiet local drink in a friendly atmosphere and apologise to the staff and relaxed and comfortable customers who use the pub everyday.
rachelmaywheeler - 22 Jun 2006 13:48
I am a regular in this pub and I would like to make comment on the reviews on this page.Yes the roof is low.Still great food, bar staff are now mostly young pretty females.Great atmosphere. I'm not sure how someone could rate it as a cafe they must have been somewhere else! The recent fight was amongst people not seen before or since. In the next few weeks it is due for a spruce up.I dont think you would regret a visit.
anonymous - 15 Jun 2006 11:32
This is the oldest pub in Sunbury. It may look a touch shabby but is kept pretty clean. The managment has changed again since the last review here as have some of the customers and barstaff.Today you will find it is a well run pub with friendly barstaff and regulars, good beer cheap food and well worth a visit.
anonymous - 15 Jun 2006 10:29
iv only been drinkin in the fishes for about a year and now i work there.i really love the place and people. i think it is the most welcoming pub in sunbury, i cant belive that these people was talkin about the 3 fishes, i think those people should come and give us another try. we have a new manager and hes be really good for the place and as for it being a very very rough that person really dont know wot a rough pub is i would not travel 2 buses just to drink and work in a pub like that.
branson - 14 Jun 2006 19:59
this is a very very rough pub - not surprised by the previous incident.

any other pub in Sunbury is superior.
anonymous - 5 Jun 2006 21:05
Have been in a few times and not a bad pub - alot better than the pheonix. However i was in the other evening and witnessed what can only be described as a brutal beating of some old guy by two other old guys and a bat!!!
anonymous - 22 Mar 2006 11:35
I have visited this pub on many occasions, although its quite friendly at certian times of the day it does play host to a selection of odd people whether they pass through or are regualrs-it amazes me. I agree there is always a large man playing darts, and the very threatening looking barman with the mis-spelt tattoos. there is also a peter andre look-a-like serving and the usual array of merriment. its often a pleasure to watch the frolics in this pub. a must see!!
Thechief - 3 Mar 2006 13:35
I drink in this pub regualy and although some new comers think it is unwelcoming I think they should give it another go.Also you should note the pub is now under new managment and run to a much better standered-with no lock ins!!Give it another go cos I love it!!!!
By the way Mike you visited in Aug 2004, sounds like your describing my best mate an although a big bloke he's lovley!!!
rachelmaywheeler - 26 Sep 2005 15:23
True enough Trog, but unfriendliness manifests itself in many ways. the bizarre barman combination of skinhead moustache + right wing tattoos made me briefly wonder whether the pub had gone either for the pink pound or the BNP - I was too scared to ask.

Having said that, they are one of the few pubs in Lower Sunbury that shows sport on a Sat afternoon, so if you want a couple of pints and Gillette Soccer Saturday, it is not all bad..
TheGP - 7 Feb 2005 12:53
Wander in here from time to time and not noticed any unfriendliness. No-one runs up and asks if I want to be their new buddy, but that would be either scary or sad.
trog - 14 Jan 2005 23:56
Been in here recently and the locals were VERY unfriendly.
Definitely a locals pub - No other pub in Sunbury will you encounter the same hostility - Possibly because this pub clearly has lock ins after hours..
TheGP - 4 Oct 2004 16:47
Reasonably good atmosphere and cheap beer - although I was rather scared by the unfeasibly large man playing darts.
mike2004 - 31 Aug 2004 14:14
3 Fishes is a very cramped pub and also very local - However, as a stop off on a pub crawl, or a few quiet midweek drinks is fine. Good quiz machine.
TheGP - 9 Aug 2004 14:51
Great pub, great food, Fosters is 1.80 a pint - what more do you want. Lots of entertainment (music box, games machine and fruit machines).
Richard Smith - 21 Apr 2004 13:36

Three Fishes was a great pub,
it had wonderful atmosphere
back in 1966. Visited u.k. in
1991. This pub has become a cafe
I would not now even rate it.
Anthony Cox - [email protected] - 14 May 2003 11:23
if you are over 6 ft tall stay well away from this pub, it has the lowest roof of any pub i have ever been in
anonymous - 1 May 2003 10:15
