The Ramblers Bar, Penrith

Stopped by twice on our recent (April 2011) trip to the Lakes. It has a clubhouse feel, rather than pub, with surprisingly few tables and lots of floor space. Very popular with families, (like ours) with football & pool tables and a super outdoor play area to keep them occupied. We had a supe tapas sharing platter & the kids meals were good quality too. Great walks nearby & super location, with friendly staff & locals from the sailing school.

The Old Portelet Inn, St Brelade

Really enjoyed our couple of visits to this pub, Feb 2011. Lovely leather sofas to snuggle up by the fire and lots of character. We didn't eat but the food looked great and the place was obviously very family friendly. Good outdoor space for the summer and a cracking location for views & walks. A great little find!

The Jovial Sailor, Ripley

Nothing good to say about this place. We have been locals for 13 years and have seen many changes of staff. Very few of them were friendly or memorable, in fact I could never really understand why my husband liked it there! The food is really hit or miss. A basic steak & ale pie could be great one week & hopeless the next, when really, it's a very simple dish to get right. I agree with previous comments that you are not really welcome if you're not eating, which is presumably why they have forced the last remaining locals out by informing the police of drink driving....... give this one a miss!
