The Bell Inn, Almeley

Popped in here one afternoon a few weeks back as I'd heard a lot of good things about the family who run it, but had never actually tried the pub. The village is a little of the beaten track with only, i would imagine, very little passing trade. The pub wasn't exactly empty and there were a few people in, all of which greeted me as I came through the door. The barman, who later turned out to be the owner, also greeted me warmly and enquired how I was etc. Choice available were 2 ciders (strongbow and Thatchers), a smooth and Carling lager. The 2 real ales were from Golden Valley Ales which the barman informed me were from Kingstone in Herefordshire. I tried the Hay Bluff and it was in tip top condition - so I had another! I stayed for lunch - cod and chips and it was really very nice and not unaffordable at 5.95. Gazing around at the posters on the wall it seems that this family are trying very hard to make this traditional country pub a success, free curry on a Tuesday, fish and chip night on a Thursday, quiz on Sundays and entertainment ranging from live music, karaoke and race nights. The trophies scattered around would also suggest that they have attracted a few teams. Refreshing to see a country pub being a hub for the community. Will return !
