The Queens Head, Newton

Whenever I really want to impress someone I bring them to this lovely pub. It's so atmospheric with the candles, the fire, the fresh wild flowers, the cobwebs, the beer from a real keg and the lovely simple roast beef and bread on Sundays. It's best to go without children so that you can sit in the really nice bit- but even with children you can play wooden pub games and soak up the atmosphere. I even like the toilets!

Pike and Eel, Cambridge

This pub (The Penny Ferry) has got Christmas decorations stuck on the outside wall all year round. No one has bothered to take them down. The place looks run down. There are hanging baskets of dead weeds outside. They have set up an indian restaurant inside and it often smells of curry but I don't know anyone who has been there. The last time we went in there it was mostly empty but there were people shouting at each other and a very bad atmosphere so we left and haven't been back.

The Green Dragon, Cambridge

This pub is how all pubs should be- really friendly and local- it also really looks the part. Quite often you go in there and it's so full it's difficult to find a seat, but you don't mind because the atmosphere is so nice. I took my mother there and we both had the soup- it was absolutely fresh and delicious- it couldn't have been better. There is a slot machine in there but it doesn't affect the atmosphere. There is a lovely fire and round the corner a huge pile of books. I don't drink beer, but the cider is fine.
