The George Inn, Rye

Very expensive. Staff are very friendly but not at all knowledgeable. It's all very well having real ales, but when all the bar staff are foreign (which isn't an issue) they really need some training in what British beers are about. Enthusiasm can't always substitute for experience! The owners have clearly spent a lot of money on refurbishing the place, but made too little investment in the actual operation.

I found the food inconsistent and the service slapdash. While I was at the bar four people were waiting to be served and nobody behind the bar for about five minutes. My wife ordered an amaretto after dinner and was told they had run out. They hadn't - the waitress just couldn't be bothered to go and get a new bottle. There are much nicer - and better value - pubs and restaurants in Rye.
