The Windsor Castle, Lower Clapton

Same name as a couple of years ago, but the locals have been cleared out, the Sky Sports subscription cancelled, marijuana aroma scrubbed away, beer prices doubled, restaurant tables added and hipster attire made compulsory. [All for good and for bad].

The St James Tavern, Bermondsey

Under new owners from mid-2014 and completely refurbed. Very welcoming and now attracts a more mixed crowd of locals and nearby workers so has a decent buzz early evening.

Serves one or two ales on pump plus additional fancier craft ales in bottles (including local brewers like The Kernel). Food is based on a menu of Pieminster pies with mushy peas and mash/chips.

Ship Inn, Brancaster

As mentioned below, this has a new owner now to replace the uptight, angry, rude and unwelcoming one previously, who has no doubt finally realised he is not suited to work in the service industry. Hopefully he has finally discovered his true calling as a Victorian era prison guard.

I await to see what it will be like, but with being pumped into a refurb and somebody with a track record, I suspect it will be worth a visit and will quickly regain some of its previous glory.

The Jolly Sailors, Brancaster Staithe

As a local I love the Jolly, which is so much better since being taken over and given a needed lease of life by the owner of the White Horse up the road. Now back to a friendly, well-run village pub.

This is a proper traditional fishing village pub, with stone floors and walls and a back entrance for the locals! Now specialises in pizzas, which are decently priced. Generally same beers on tap as the White Horse, including their own labels.

Like anywhere 'round here, gets busy in summer with tourists and sloany ponies but can be deathly quiet in winter. Both are good as far as I'm concerned.

The White Horse, Brancaster Staithe

Great pub, and very proud to have it as my local! Basically the owner has got a good handle on how to run a quality pub, and has turned the White into a friendly pub at the front with an award winning restaurant out the back.

Quiet off-season, but still friendly and homely. Rammed in summer months with tourists, sailors, locals and hordes of clueless rich kids.

Recent additions are abar food menu (rather than just food in restaurant) and a spacious outside seating area.

Old Nick, Holborn

After work traditional boozer with good beer on tap (German HB lager, Badger bitter as well as a seasonal ale), usually quick and friendly service.

This is a great 'local' for Holborn workers, particularly the legal types.

Bar Polska, Holborn

A Polish bar run by non-Polish people, with no Polish beer on tap, and prices that would drive Eastern Europeans back to communism.

On the plus side, the food is fairly authentically Polish, such as pierogi (albeit presented in small, neat portions and twice the price it should be), and they do have a lot of Polish vodka to try out.

There is nothing actually wrong with Bar Polska, but with plenty of great pubs in the Holborn area I fail to see why you would want to choose this place above others. Save your money and get a cheap flight to Krakow instead.

Digested read: As Polish as a sombrero hat, but twice the price.
