The Black Lion, Plaistow

An absolute ACE of a pub. Well stocked cellar, knowledgeble and aimable barstaff, limited but well cooked menu...... All this may not be enough to make you jump in the car and head down there but you should remember WHERE this pub is. Plaistow is like Beruit on a "lets use up all our old ammo" day. Now I'm no longer a local and have only been using the pub whilst my dear old mum is in the local hospital, but I'm deeply grateful for the Black Lion as it provided a haven in an otherwise barren wasteland of Chav culture. If your in the area - phone for chopper cover and take refuge in here until armoured rescue arrives.

King Harold, Harold Wood

Having read with interest the last 2 reviews I feel i need to add my two penneth. I Work quite local to this "establishment" and as such use the Harold some lunchtimes. I stress that this is because of Geography only. The atmosphere is bland at best, not to mention smokey (role on July 1st!). The food is totally non-descript and the quality of the beer is poor. Add to this the obvious lack of moral fibre shown by the owners in the previous reports and i would be surprised if this pub is winning many new customers. The decor is straight out of the Ark and the toilets are shocking.
The best part of the pub are the few rickety benches stuck outside on the footpath where at least your only poisened by the passing traffic and trains instead of the chain smoking "locals".
Out of ten - I'd award 2 points. In truth a better bet is to hop in the car and go to the Bull at Brentwood.

The John Barleycorn, Threshers Bush

Fantastic location, Great food and I've got to say the Cleanest pub i've ever been in. This attention to detail continues in the great garden/seating area and even the immaculate car park. Get's very busy at the weekend lunch/evening times, even more so when the sun is out. Food quality is great but choice is a little limited. Only other negative would be that the staff at weekends are suplemented by a younger team who frankly can get out of their depth. Also one particular middle "manager" who must be about 19 years old & thinks he's to important to serve drinks. That said the pub remains a firm favourite and it's popularity is testement to it's quality.

The White Horse, East Ham

An absolute Sty. Only frequented by moronic would be toughies and sad lonely old men. (Oh and glaziers who are needed on a near daily basis to repair the smashed windows!)If this was the only pub in the UK I'd move to france and thats saying something.
The only way this hole could be improved would be with a Bulldozer.

The Gate, Sawbridgeworth

We moved to Sawbo about 18 monthes ago & have been searching for a pub in the town that ticks all the boxes. WE THINK WE'VE FOUND IT!. The pub is on the small side but the welcome is BIG. Great selection of beers, speciallity home brew cider and great value food make this a very decent drinking hole. Special mention for the staff who all display a real affection for delivery of quality products with passion and pride. The Sunday roast is as good as any I've had outside of my familys various kitchens. All in all a real gem of a pub.
