The Telegraph , Putney Heath

Agreed. This place can really suffer on busy days...sunny Sundays particularly. But have experienced nothing but friendly and helpful service, well-poured beer and the food is good even on rough days. Brought my entire family here from various ends of the country for the annual Xmas get-together and was pretty nervous about what they'd think. No one was disappointed. Phew!

The Angel, Roehampton

A museum piece. There are pubs like this featuring in episodes of the Sweeney. My gilrfriend wandered in here on her own once and seriously ordered a Kir Royale. Ha ha ha ha ha

The Rising Sun, Moseley Green

Great pub. Cheap and cheerful but super-friendly and welcoming. Went there after Xmas and counted 6 fake bling Xmas trees inside. Great!!! Real treat after plodding through a muddy forest

The Duke Of Cumberlands Head, Clifton

Must be talking about a different pub!
My partner, daughter and myself certainly aren't old and we had a great inexpensive lunch served by a very eloquent Englishman despite the fact that even on a good day I could easily be mistaken for riff-raff.
Roaring log fire and a beautiful Xmas tree in one of the most atmospheric pubs I've ever been to. Loved it.

Bar Polska, Holborn

Been going here semi regularly since it opened in the 90s. Not a lager drinker at all but make an exception here as there is such a good array of quality Polish beers (although I believe Zywiec is in the hands of heineken, and EB is fosters...). Nevertheless, John runs a tight ship and he and his staff are always super-friendly (I've found). Food pricey but hearty. Not the cosiest of establishments but then...it's a bar!

The Seven Stars, Chancery Lane

I agree with other posters about some of the niggles. Yes, the stairs are steep (I like that); yes, Ms B's oh-so faux Bohemian attitude grates somewhat; yes, the food is pricey and...err...vinegary. BUT how come when I'm uptown I am inexorably drawn to this charming, interesting and cosy pub?
The cat is called Thomas Paine. And he wears a ruff.

Ye Old Mitre, Holborn

Undoubtedly one of the greatest pubs anywhere (London or Cambridgeshire). Atmos, beer, food (well, cheese on toast and pickled eggs) and polite service from staff that seem to have been here when QE1 did her dance with Sir Christopher Hatton around the tree. Remember once sitting here drinking and chatting about fairly sacriligious subjects (as you do) when we were suddenly surrounded by 6 priests all downing pints of Broadside.....or was that a bizarre Welsh-rarebit induced dream?
