Yr Hen Dderwan, Carmarthen

The pub is called Y hen dderwen not dderwan as the photo shows .

Dyfed ceased to exist many years ago and it should read

Carmarthenshire.

The clientele are largely seedy and from Park Hall estate.

I never mentioned a conspiracy . I am a longstanding committee member

of another London CAMRA branch who is very well aware of the

procedures and deadlines involved in GBG selection .

The Duke of Hamilton has been under serious threat

for over nine months , this wasn 't just rumour and tittle tattle and only

received a limited reprieve very recently . This pub should not have been

included in GBG 2011 for that reason.

The real threat to the Wenlock has only emerged

recently , well after the deadlines for shortlisting and surveying . If

branches excluded every pub where the licencees were rumoured to

be leaving the GBG would be a very thin volume.

While I'm at it how has North London branch managed

to exclude the superb Southampton Arms in Gospel Oak and The Jolly

Butchers in Stoke Newington while including a raft of very average

pubs in the Euston /Kings Cross area ?

If the Wenlock was excluded on that criteria why did North London

CAMRA include the similarly - threatened Duke of Hamilton in

Hampstead ?

The Southampton Arms, Gospel Oak

Excellent pub with distressed , retro decor including an old vinyl

turntable.
My only small quibble would be that I'd prefer a couple

more ales instead of, the in my opinion OTT range of ciders.

Their internet domain name wenlockarms.co.uk is for sale too. Looks

like the rumours are true this time.

Jolly Butchers, Stoke Newington

Paid my second visit yesterday . The message about short measures seems

to have hit home . My pints were topped up without prompting. However ,

the beer quality was still inconsistent with a couple of the beers being

served a little ` fresh '.

Having said that the intentions are good and the

management enthusiastic and seemingly capable of listening and

learning . With a couple of tweaks this could be one of London 's top

ale houses.

Regarding the posting by mr.toes5 I visited the Wenlock yesterday

and spoke to one of the co -owners . He strongly denied that either

of them had any plans to retire.

Jolly Butchers, Stoke Newington

When I visited the pub the pint glasses certainly were not lined .

Virtually every pint they pulled was a short measure . Some of them

not even close.

Jolly Butchers, Stoke Newington

Called in for the first time on Bank Holiday Monday having heard some

very good reports . My review is more mixed .

Clearly somebody involved

in the running of the pub knows what they 're doing as evidenced by

the gastro format layout and firniture . The beer range was excellent

with beers from Thornbrige , Dark Star , Redemption and Brodies. Plus

Meantime Helles and foreign beers on draught and in bottle .

Food was fresh and tasty served from the open kitchen

by a friendly and very attractive waitress.

However on the down side the beer quality was

inconsistent and short measures were common . The bar staff didn 't

have much knowledge of the beers and only topped up the pints with

bad grace . One customer also returned one beer which he felt was

substandard and was faced with a wall of reluctance in getting it

exchanged .

All in all a pub to watch . Much potential but not there yet.

The New Crown, Southgate

A large open plan Spons pub. Usually has four guest beers . Some

concerns have been expressed by regulars over the new manager

who seems to lack the commitment of her predecessors to maintaining

the range and quality of the real ales.

Paul the highly respected bar / cellarman from the nearby Three

Fountains is now working at the Wenlock.

The Old Fountain, Old Street

I was surprised to see Paul is now working at the Wenlock. Must

have been an acrimonious departure.
