The Railway, Tulse Hill

Now my favourite pub in the area after the revamp. All the same benefits as before, but with properly lovely interior now. And they still seem to have the odd hot barmaid or two kicking around, as well as the more regular staff. Which is nice. Will really come into its own in the summer - also noticing some nicely off-the-wall events/DJs doing the rounds, which is most welcome.

The White Hart, West Norwood

Scary, but cheap.

The Railway, Tulse Hill

Great Pub. I live behind it, so by default it is my local. Love it, to be fair. Great staff, cracking food for the money and friendly punters - a good mix too; the odd suit stopping by on the way from work, the odd local Roodbwoy, the odd student here and there. All good-natured and friendly. Great massive open space in the summer (sadly all paved - but good terrace and barbecue). Not the last word in design or avant-garde beers but then, as the owner said to me, that's not the idea. Recommended.

Escape Bar and Art, Herne Hill

Utterly schizophrenic. When quiet, this place is great - interesting 'student bar' atmosphere, nice staff, good music. However, when crowded the staff become rude, the music gets stupidly loud and the punters become a crowd of pretentious mullet-toting wannabes with attitude. Attitude like that is fine if you're a Hoxton fashion designer - when you're Reg from accounts, putting on some distressed jeans, messing up your hair and speaking faux Cockney isn't going to wash with me, boy. Behave yourself, and for God's sake, get a haircut. It's a shame, as the concept of this bar is sound, and helps broaden the available drinking experiences in the area. Oh, and junk the ethnic house music. It's dreadful, and sooo 2002, dahling.

The Commercial, Herne Hill

Cracking pub. Never went to the old one, but refurbished one is great; great decor - very obviously a pub but with stylish touches. Passable food, very nice customers and staff. My favourite pub in the area, now. 3.00 a pint, but where in London that's nice to drink in is significantly cheaper? I recommend this place, particularly on a Sunday.
