Mr Foley's Cask Ale House, Leeds

This is a good pub. I can definitely say that it no longer smells of vomit -- there was a sign announcing temporary closure to deal with it, then the next week the admittedly smell was completely gone, and has not been detected since (that was a good six months back). Really good choice of beers, nice and cosy, plenty of space.

The Deramore Arms, Heslington

Changed hands recently, and signs looked positive with good guest ales (notably Hopback Summer Lightning, which I adore) and much-improved food. And then, and then, one of the bar staff short-changed me (to the tune of a fiver!) and wouldn't admit his mistake. After much patient insistence he did, but still, that's no way to persuade someone to come back. Since then, I haven't. Shame really.

The Rose and Crown, York

Not sure about the new ownership. Used to have consistently crap beer, decent food, and a good atmosphere. Still has crap beer, although I noted a slight improvement from a very low base. However, it now has crap food too (stone cold soup, and everything was crop-dusted with paprika, presumably for artistic reasons?) and to boot no atmosphere whatsoever. Unless you're there for the football on sky, the Rook across the road is a no brainer.

The Rook and Gaskill, York

One of the best ranges of beer I've seen anywhere: usually at least 5 (yes, that's right, five) guests plus Castle Rock's Elsie Mo. Just as well that the bar staff know their stuff, aren't afraid to be opinionated about what's good and what isn't, and give sound recommendations. The beer festivals they hold are always good fun, although the place gets packed out. Food at lunchtimes also deserves a mention, cheap, filling and home-made days and times they serve it can be erratic, but there's a good chip shop across the road if all else fails.

The Maltings, York

Just as good as everyone says. Beer is never short of great, they do particularly well with stouts and porters. The real treat is the food though, which is delicious and amazing value. Only problems are the size of the place (it's tiny) and the tourists (particularly on race days), neither of which can be helped. Everything else (especially the friendly & knowledgeable bar staff) more than makes up for it.

The Light Horseman, York

Far too pricey for its location, and the proprietors tend towards the pushy (attempts to linger over a pint are treated abruptly). Does a decent enough pint of Bomber, and not a bad place to watch the football, but that's about it.

The Wellington, York

I'll say this first: not only the cheapest but also by far the best pint of cask OBB in York, and possibly anywhere else. I've never had a bad pint of bitter in here, and I must be into high double figures by now. The atmosphere is frozen from a bygone age, with small front bar and a snug little back room. Unwaveringly loyal crowd of regulars (almost all locals, with the odd smattering of students on their best behaviour) who although a little wary at first are a perfectly amiable bunch if you get them talking. Add to all this the highly jocular Steve and the highly formidable Dawn (who secretly has a heart of gold), and you've got my favourite pub in the whole bloody world. Long may it prosper.

Ye Olde White Harte, Hull

Very pleasant pub, good pint of Caledonian 80/-. Excellent selection of single malts as well.
