Ye John Seldon, Worthing

A charismatic village pub, friendly atmosphere and perfect for a weekday lunch. As others have said the food menu is basic, but the food was of excellent quality and reasonably priced by pub standards.

Choice of ales was also limited (Pride, Abbot, Tetley, Harveys) but in excellent condition and cheap at 2.85 a pint. All in all a decent pub which we'd be happy to visit again.

The review below from BIGKATE rings a bell. Let's get the good points out of the way first: they're finally serving full pints, the Adnam's was in good condition and the onion rings were well cooked (shame about the steak, mind).

Sadly, the quality of the food has declined massively (as has the choice of ale), don't know who they're buying meat from but their sirloin steaks were tough enough to sole your boots with.

Service was civil but grossly inefficient; the four staff working the bar were unable to cope with demand and made no effort to serve customers in order - took nearly 15 minutes to order food. They weren't helped by having to squeeze past the well-proportioned manageress who was standing there doing little other than blocking up the bar while others worked around her.

On two occasions they've been unable to serve several of the dishes on the menu - the fact that they can do a chicken tikka but not a korma says a lot about how freshly prepared their curries are. What a shame that a change of management has spoiled what used to be a decent pub.

The Spring Grove, Kingston Upon Thames

Good beer and pleasant staff; frequented on Monday nights over winter by your local Morris dancers, the Spring Grove Morris Men (who usually come to drink, not to dance!). Come and say hello, if you see us in there!

Unlike many Young's pubs, they make a point of stocking the seasonal ale - and decline to sell it until the barrel has settled down and is ready to be tapped. The landlord is obviously conscientious and the beer is served in excellent condition. Food is not particularly exciting, but satisfactory.

Having had lunch here twice recently, the food has been of amazingly good quality on both occasions (it rivals many restaurants) and the beer in excellent condition.

I am surprised by the negative reviews here as I cannot fault this pub on its food or beer. Admittedly I haven't been there of an evening, but it is obvious that the landlord takes great pride in his pub and that the staff know what they are doing.

Well worth a visit - very highly recommended.

The White Cross, Richmond

Good beer, served in good condition. Service is a bit slow, but friendly. A perfectly acceptable watering hole.

The Barmy Arms, Twickenham

After a 15-minute wait for service, my pint was easily half an inch short. I asked the barman (in perfectly civil terms) to top it up and was greeted with a mouthful of abuse about my attitude.

On speaking to the manager, he declined to resolve the problem and suggested that I had drunk the amount that was missing from my glass. The manager was very aggressive and would not accept that one of his staff might have served a less than perfect pint. In preference to solving the problem, he then invited me to take my money back and go elsewhere, which I accepted.

This must be the worst service I have ever received. This incident put a nasty tinge on an otherwise excellent evening. If this is indicative of the new management, then I fear for the future of what used to be a lovely pub. If you value fair measures and good old-fashioned customer service, avoid like the plague.
