Coach & Horses, Clifton

I like this pub very much. Others don't. You can't keep people happy all the time. It's a pub pub. Not the greatest in the world. Certainly not the worst.

The King's Head Inn, Coleford

In the middle of absolutely nowhere, but.... a proper old pub, if you like that kind of thing. Crusty rolls, Cheddar Valley, good ale, the mumble of local talk. Not bad at all. Very few pubs like this any more. Maybe not everyone's cup of tea.

The Riflemans Arms, Glastonbury

The Rifleman's seems to go from great heights to great depths and never anything in between. The South African landlords have gone now and with them a lot of custom, it seems. Whether this is due to the recession, or to them, I don't know. But the place is very different now.

The Riflemans Arms, Glastonbury

Unusual and original pub. Mixture of very old front rooms, music room and large smoking area. Eclectic clientele, truly anything goes. Three Somerset ales on (Butcombe, Potholer and Barnstomer) - well kept, good service and very ambient atmosphere. The pluses - always busy (I've heard), service good, lots of live music, good-looking barmaids (sorry, that's a plus!). The minuses - it's a trek from town, the menu is simple pub fare, and it can get very, very busy. Glad I visited though.

The King Arthur, Glastonbury

Haven't visited The Arthur for quite a few years. It was busy back then (and a fun pub) and quite busy when I visited this time. But in a totally different way. Lots of kids lolling around precariously to dub (?) music. It seems I had dropped in on the wrong night. I totally respect the need for pubs to attract their target market in any way they can in these difficult times, and fair play to them for doing so, but it felt like some sort of rave thing to me. Wandered around for a few minutes and left without ordering a pint. Very different.

The Old Ale House, Salisbury

I always drop in here when I'm in Salisbury. Reasonably well kept ales, mixed types and ages of clientele, decent atmosphere, good staff. It's a good pub but maybe not a super pub. A tad pricey maybe. There's reasonable pub grub at lunch time.
