The Three Horseshoes, St Albans

Went to this pub today for Sunday lunch primarily because it claimed to be child friendly. Made the booking online but when we turned up they had no booking. Also they only had two high chairs and there was a waiting list to get them! So much for child friendly.

I had pork belly, which was OK, but the crackling wasn't crispy, however the pies were good.

Desert was ordered, my wife asked for a Black Forest Sundae, but when it turned up it was an Eton mess sundae. When we queried it we were told that they had run out of the Black Forest Sundae. Eventually they agreed to take it back and bring something else. I ordered a Toffee and Butterscotch steam pudding. What I got was a sponge cake which hadn't been close to steam, most likely a microwave, and they had managed to burn the butterscotch within the sponge itself, and no custard, only a little vanilla ice cream.

This place is cheap and cheerful, don't expect good value and you won't be disappointed, but if you like your food, stay away.

The Sunrunner, Hitchin

This is a good local pub,, with a friendly, informal atmosphere. Good interesting beers as well. The toilets could do with some attention and it will benefit from the smoking ban.

The Raven, Hexton

Food is pretty standard stuff, nothing to write home about and the pub itself lacks character, despite it being in such a pretty village

The Black Horse, Ireland

Really disappointed with this pub. They cram as many people into the pub as they can and the food is pretty average.

There are better food pubs in the area

The Crown, Henlow

This pub has recently been taken over by Wallman Pubs. Unfortunately the food hasn't improved. The starters were of low quality and quite pricey for what they were. The mains looked good but the vegetables were poorly cooked and the pie fillings were meagre.

A nice looking pub, but go for a drink there and give the food a miss

The Hare and Hounds, Old Warden

This is the best pub in the area. The food is wonderful, always an interesting menu and always good quality. Its not the cheapest food, but this really is a case of you get what you pay for.

The White Horse, Southill

Went to the White Horse last night and was disappointed. The food was mediocre and they crammed in a many tables as possible. We had no problem with service but a large group next to us had the wrong meals turning up. I wonder whether this pub has changed hands recently, but it now seems to cater to as wider group as possible and therefore nothing is particularly interesting. Avoid
