The Ward Arms, Guilsborough

Congratulations to the new landlord and landlady for doing such an excellent job. The beers are good, the food is hearty and there's a very pleasant, welcoming atmosphere.

Apparently, the landlord's other pub, in Kettering, has just won CAMRA's regional pub of the year award, for the second year in succession. With plans to build a micro brewery behind the Ward Arms, perhaps this will be a contender for next year's prize?

The Wharf Inn, Welford

An excellent village pub by a marina at the end of the Welford Arm of the Grand Union Canal. New licensees have transformed this pub over the past 18 months. We are always made to feel extremely welcome by the courteous and friendly bar staff.

The food is varied, freshly-cooked, well prepared and inexpensive.

There are 2 regular real ales, Bank's Bitter and Marstons Pedigree, plus 3 regularly-changing guest ales and frequent beer festivals.

Children are welcome in the non-smoking restaurant area and there's a large, peaceful garden - ideal for summer evenings.

Popular with walkers, cyclists, bargees, tourists, locals, families and real ale enthusiasts.

My one regret is that I'm only able to visit this pub once a month, when in the area.
