The Southampton Arms, Gospel Oak

Top top pub. Beers are only *only* from independent breweries, so a refreshing change from the usual suspects. About 8 on from memory, so a great choice. Likewise with the ciders. Such a welcoming sight to not be greeted by a 'mainstream' ale or cider - let alone no lagers. At all. Brilliant.

Food was also of the 'real' variety - pies (and a selection here as well), filled rolls, sausage rolls etc. Simple but effective. My pork pie was excellent - and good value at 3 for a couple of big slices.

Service was also very good - friendly, welcoming with a smile and, that rarity of things, a voice. You know... 'hello'... 'what can i get you?' etc. As opposed to the eyebrow raise employed in many establishments these days.

Can't recommend this place highly enough. Should be on any '1000 pubs to visit before you die' lists immediately!

Canal House, Nottingham

visited today. beer range was great - some decent ales, good selection of quality lagers, lots of bottled stuff and a knockout pint of marston's oyster stout. 8/10 for beers.

however, food was below average. didn't spot a restaurant (was drinking outside) but the food we ordered at and collected from the bar was poor. bland and (seemingly) microwaved to within an inch of its life. saw other dishes on other tables and they didn't look great either. 3/10 for food.

Sydney Arms, Dorchester

a pub trying to be a happy eater/harvester. awful. avoid. unless you like harvesters or happy eater type places, then you'll love this.

Tom Browns, Dorchester

has the makings of a great pub. brews it's own beer - the bitter's pretty good - decor is fine and it's comfortable enough. live music on quiet a few nights. but...

a pub that supposedly takes its beer seriously enough to brew its own (on the premises) shouldn't be serving beer that smells of vinegar. and they certainly shouldn't be employing bar staff who take offence to be asked to replace said beer, throws the pints down and has to be asked (politely) 3 times to top pints up.

VERY disappointing.

Shakespeare, Stoke Newington

decent enough pub, but staff could do with smiling now and then. and a verbal greeting to customers wouldn't go amiss. beer - quality and choice - is good, and pizzas from next door more than make up for lack of pub grub.
