The Hyde Tavern, Winchester

Fantastic pub, great selection of varying guest beers always in great condition. Quirky little front room with a garden down the stairs for some al-fresco drinking.

Can't stress enough how olde-worlde this pub feels, but has managed to combine it with a modern twist - the paintings on the wall change regularly; they encourage you to have business meetings in the back bar during the day; there's craft groups that meet there.

Fantastic community pub with brilliant beer!

Joe Daflos, Southampton

No real ales, but a fair selection of wines. Mainly an eating place rather than a bar.
Opposite the Mayflower Theatre, so popular with theatre goers.
Maybe a little pricey, but the building is very nice and it's been fairly tastefully renovated.

Encore, Southampton

Busy after work, and then continues with the pre-theatre crowd. Very handy for the station.
Has a non-smoking section in the back corner, far left of the bar.

The Wellington Arms, Southampton

Friendly local with excellent beer. Non-smoking room at the back and a beer garden. Good natured pub quiz on Thursdays.
Did I mention the excellent beer?

The Waterloo Arms, Freemantle

A Hopback brewery pub with non-smoking conservatory. The real ales on offer always include Summer Lightning, Entire Stout and GFB. There is always at least two more real ales including one guest.
The food offering is standard pub fare - not worth travelling for.
The conservatory through the back is a no-smoking area and usually has a quiet radio on a talk station. The beer garden has four or five tables on a patio. Well behaved children welcome in the garden.
The beer is well worth a walk from Southampton Station, or even further afield.

The Alexandra, Southampton

Quiet pub, just off the main street. Has a big screen, beer garden and decent real ales. Good pub to go and have a mid-week chinwag with your mates.

The Bent Brief, Southampton

Nice little boozer with a couple of pool tables and a small stage. Not sure of the usual bands they have on, but I heard a very cool jazz band.
