The Unicorn Inn, Hanley

Went there on Monday. Lovely city centre pub of the kind that is almost extinct. No telescreen or chavs in sight. Proper range of drinks including some top single malts. Regrettably, it was very quiet when we were there, but if you're lucky you can get some decent people in here. Has to be marked down slightly for piped music. Not quite as good as the Coachmakers, but in a better location for the city centre.

You're better off here before the theatre or the Sugarmill/Underground, as all those venues are shite inside & the Stage Door is an inexcusable hovel. This is a very strong city centre pub. 8.

The Post Office Vaults, Burslem

Funny sort of place because it's much smaller than your average pub, but works quite well. You can get a real ale & a decent drop of single malt. Regrettably there are 2 TVs in there often blaring sports idiocy, but it's still worth a pint & a spirit if you're in on your way to other Burslem locales. Better than most in the city. 7.

The Wheatsheaf, Tunstall

Under new management. It was shite before & it's somehow managed to get even worse now. No decent drinks & full of the usual idiotic jobseekers you'd find in a pub in this town.

The Leopard, Burslem

Went there yesterday afternoon & had a great time. Really big, but unlike other places of its size it manages its bigness well & creates a fine atmosphere. Excellent range of ales. It certainly deserves a higher rating than it has now, but has to be marked down from perfection for lack of single malt!

The Grange Farm, Leicester

About average really. Obviously considers itself a cut above, but really isn't. You'd need to do away with the piped music & get a better range before you managed that. Timbers aren't enough...

The Wheatsheaf, Shrewsbury

Went here on Saturday afternoon & found it a very pleasant little place in a good location. Excellent staff & very friendly locals. Could do with a wider selection of drinks so not perfect, but worth a stop for those finding themselves here.

Britannia, Euston Station

Very inferior pub which I made the mistake of going to because it was convenient for Euston Station. No half-decent drinks, no atmosphere. Never again. 2 points for the barmaid.

The Coachmakers Arms, Hanley

One of the best in the city, excellent drinks, frequented by real charachters rather than the sort of plankton you'll find in the chains. Certainly deserves saving from these parasites at the council.

The Talisman, Tunstall

Reasonable atmosphere & staff, but very limited range of drinks. Also quite chavvish round the edges, but still ok as a place to start if you're going into town.

The Bulls Head, Burslem

Very strong pub with superior range of drinks & very friendly staff & drinkers. Not as much space as there might be, but maybe it's a victim of its own success in that respect. I'll certainly be going back.
