After a long walk along the river, we arrived at Swan Hotel at 3.30pm, in the rain with a small dog in tow. Having been turned away from every other pub in town, we were welcomed into the Swan, ordered great bar meals and enjoyed the smokeless fuel open fire and generally had a great afternoon...

The Swan, Ruislip

As a long-time regular of the Swan until a couple of years ago, it was with a heavy heart that I ventured through the door on a recent saturday night. The pub has been overrun with wannabe gangsters, possible with a few genuine ones among them. There was a third-rate karaoke set-up, which between performances was playing deafening drum and bass tripe and the place was filthy. This used to be a nice little pub, but it needs saving. Soon.

The Abercorn Arms, Teddington

Worth a visit for the good beer and the omelettes. Sign says they are world-class. Dunno about that, but they are pretty good. Seats uncomfortable and magazines are a bit old. Otherwise tough to criticise.

Plume of Feathers, Portscatho

Visited the Plume three times in a week when working in the area. Friendly, gently raucous and affordable food. Go on friday for fish and chips. St. Austell ales on cask. Gets very busy and can be tricky to get to the bar when the regular visitors are leaning thereabouts. Otherwise excellent. Watch the steps into the toilet when trousered...
