The Green Man, Putney Heath

Epitome of a decent boozer. Food and atmosphere ok, beer mostly good if variable. In the space of 3 days I had probably the best pint of Youngs since brewing departed Wandsworth, and .... then one of the worst. Difference between this, and say, the Bricklayers, is that a duff barrel wouldnt stay on long there. But if this was the minimum standard for all pubs, sites like beerintheevening wouldnt be necessary.

The Railway, Putney

Attempted to go in here to try the beer but on getting 3 paces in the door was overcome by a cloud of ammonia from a group of local down & outs. Had to execute a 180 degree turn to avoid retching . That's Wetherspoons for you, I suppose.

The Captain Cook, Putney

Went in last Sunday and had a tragic experience akin to the previous reviewer. Food seemed ambitious but very poorly executed. Roast was about 80% fat and had to send it back as it was cold anyway. Not a single real ale (or even keg bitter) on either. Virtually empty and deservedly so - a shame because it's a decent space. And....3.75 for a pint of orange & lemonade ? Probably only a matter of time before the doors swing shut.

The Duke of Hamilton, Hampstead

I can see both sides of the argument : there are a few eccentrics floating around, but they generally only want a wry word and pointing in the right direction as they shuffle off to the toilet. More importantly it's an excellent pub for drinkers, with variety, well kept ale, competitive prices and honest cheap food. The landlord and staff seemed affable and helpful to me. Thats most of my boxes ticked.

Might be one to avoid in the evening if the fruitcake count goes up, but as an uncomplicated afternoon boozer, hard to beat.
