The Wenlock Arms, Hoxton

had a wonderful meal here last night, pan fried sword fish served on a bed or puy lentils with a rocket and parmasan salad, washed down with a splendid bottle of chilean malbec.
No hang on a minute that was the night before, somewhere else, last night i drank 12 pints of strong ale, fell asleep in the corner and woke op on a night bus around 3 am somewhere near acton.
Needless to say I will be returning to this wonderous drinking establishment... Tonight.

okay its clearly a chain pub but i still like it. think the refurb is an improvement, its a really lovely pub with nice features, a half decent beer selection, primarily youngs ales i seem to remember. hampstead has a reasonable selection of pubs all quite different to suit different moods, i'm not often in the mood for uniformed bar staff and pre-printed menus but somehow this place keeps pulling me back.

Cracking little pub, really friendly, down to earth, cosy, good selection of beers and some well kept ales. No idea what the food is like but its a really great place to settle in for an evening. The sort of place you could happily take your girlfriend or a group of mates.

The Prince, Stoke Newington

Used to be a nice pub, hasn't changed much physically but its all gone a bit stiff. Tables all laid up for eating, what happens if you just want a couple of beers? no longer welcome? My main gripe; they don't let dogs in because its a 'food based pub'. Well if anyone requires the company of a kanine whilst drinking/eating out here are a few dog friendly 'food based' alternatives that still keep it real:
the cow, junction tavern, jt. johns, engineer, landsdowne, lord stanley, lord palmerston, the star, the vine, duke of cambridge, the queens, victoria stakes, the cat and mutton, the royal oak, the dove, the fox etc. etc. There are of course loads more as well as all the fantastic non food based pubs, nearly all of whom let dogs in.
Pull your head out of your back side the prince!

The Star, Highgate

wow! what a find. ive been living in the tufnell park area for years and only just discovered this place. It's by far the best pub in the area, nice selection of real ales, really good food that puts a lot of the usual suspects to shame (not mentioning any names), and its got a really friendly feel to it, kind of old school, not too corporate. Restaurant food but its not trying to be a restaurant which makes it a bit more relaxed.
