The Black Bull, Midgley

I stopped off here, hoping that the serving staff were as described below, but alas no.

Beer and food were OK though.

A wistful six-to-seven-out-of-ten seems fair.

Roebuck Tavern, Sheffield

This pub at least offers convenient, person-scaled sanctuary, from the glass-and-stainless-steel, of the city centre piazzas that it adjoins.

No, it's not the most remarkable of pubs, but there's a place for everything.

I wasn't interrogated as to whether "everything was alright for me" either, which is a joy in itself.

Old Nelson, Stroud

A Brewer's Fayre, adjoining a Premier Inn, but quite jolly for that, perhaps because access to the town centre is a surprisingly awkward walk, and there's not much else around here.

The best thing about it is the smell of wild garlic, from the wooded bank in the car park (in yours ay's opinion of course, kind gentlefolk).

Six-out-of-ten might be a trifle ungenerous? You decide.

The Double Top, Beeston

Outstanding (you could say) piece of 1960s architecture. There are few other pubs quite like it. Some might add that it should be listed by English Heritage, but then they said that about the egg boxes in Sheffield too. It was "modern" once, I suppose.

It offers Deuchars IPA, so your truly offers a perhaps-generous five-out-of-ten.

White Swan, Stokesley

Fantastic place. Great to eavesdrop on a few local tales, even if they were generally of symptoms, prescriptions, and side-effects.

Beautiful fire, delightful beer. The locals are blessed indeed.

The Royal Oak, Ockbrook

If you find yourself otherwise stranded in any of the hotels around Pride Park, then believe me, it absolutely is worth getting a taxi here and back. Really, it is.

Yours truly doffs his hat, bows, and awards nine-out-of-ten.

The Wheatsheaf Inn, Fareham

We had a few delightful pints of Flower Pot Ale yesterday afternoon, and ended up eating in the restaurant early evening. The latter seems to be a quite separate operation from the pub.

The bar atmosphere changes markedly for the better as the afternoon becomes the evening, and the paint-spattered overalls and cigarettes-behind-the-ear are replaced by perhaps better-chosen attire, and four legs by two.

A heartwarming seven-out-of ten is accordingly sent from yours ay.

The Queens Head, Titchfield

The pint of Double that I had from Flack Manor last night was sharp. When I returned to the bar, on hearing this, a Churchill-esque gentleman on a stool next to me took it immediately to his lips and scowled. "That's why I drink Guinness", he rumbled. The staff changed the barrel and the next pint was fine.

There was a good range, I only tried the one, but I'm not sure that it's turning over quickly enough.

The beautiful Georgian exterior of this pub is not followed through to the inside, but it's cosy and with a friendly atmosphere.

A respectable six or seven out of ten seems about right to this happy wanderer.
