Den Engel, Leek

Moved from St Edwards St several years ago (but only 100 yds away) and the 'new' place doesn't have the character and atmosphere of the 'old' Den Engel. That said, any place serving over 100 different bottles of Belgium beer can't be all that bad! Flemish restaurant upstairs that serves unadventurous, middle of the road food. Staff young and friendly but Management can be a bit sour.

The Earl Grey Inn, Leek

This place should have a protection order slapped on it, nothing I can say can prepare you for what's in store at the Earl Grey. Travel back 40 years and things would be little different although some of the regulars may look a little younger. Suprising thing is that the real ales are well kept, the Landlord very knowledgeable and the locals friendly. Give it a try, you'll be pleasantly surprised.

The Bulls Head, Leek

Shut and likely to be converted to flats. The only good thing about this place shutting is that it it spares the locals from having to drink the output from Leek Brewery!

The Wilkes Head, Leek

Brewery tap for Whim Ales brewed in the village of Hartington - try the Hartington Bitter a top quality session beer. Alway a good selection of Whim and guest beers and cider available all well kept and served on top form. Staff and regulars are a mixed bunch ranging from characters to barking mad! Beware, the landlord is from Yorkshire but don't worry nobody takes any notice of him. The whole 'Wilkes' experience is classic; comfortable surroundings, good company and great beer - enjoy.

The Park Inn, Leek

Shut for several months and little evidence of it reopening in the near future.

The Masons Arms, Stapleton

Pretty off-putting from the outside and turn left into the bar and you may be put off by the Black Rat swilling locals. Go right into the cosy snug or better still enjoy the nicely laid out gardens and enjoy one of the well kept real ales - 5 or 6 available on my last visit. Bar staff friendly and after a couple of visits you may get a nod from the landlord. Unspoilt, down to earth and good beer at a fair price - what more could you ask for!
